Three years ago, when Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz first met at Wimbledon in a round-of-16 fixture, the tennis world was still speaking about them in hushed tones. They were talented and showed promise, but could they really bloom and prosper?
Three years hence, they are No. 1 and No. 2, with three and five Major titles, continuously unfolding and flourishing like a marvellous set of flowers from a densely packed inflorescence bud. Sunday's Wimbledon final will be their 13th career meeting and second on Centre Court.
If their most-recent tie is anything to go by, it promises to be another classic.

Holger Rune gets witty reply after texting Russian tennis star: 'I'm probably too old for you'
Speaking on a podcast hosted by former Russian player Elena Vesnina, Veronika Kudermetova revealed receiving a text from the rising tennis star from Denmark and how she playfully turned down the 22-year-old's approach. read more Veronika Kudermetova had to remind Holger Rune of her marriage to long-time coach Sergei Demekhine after the latter tried to approach her with a text. Image: Reuters/Instagram Russian tennis star Veronika Kudermetova recently opened up on a light-hearted conversation with Holger Rune, in which she gave the rising star from Denmark a reminder on her personal life. Speaking on a podcast hosted by former Russian player Elena Vesnina, Kudermetova revealed receiving a text from the 22-year-old, currently ranked ninth in the world, and how she responded to the Dane's approach. Kudermetova turns down Rune's approach in a witty manner 'Rune recently texted me. I told him, 'Boy, I'm probably too old for you. If you looked at my Instagram, you'd see I have a husband.' He replied, 'Oh, sorry.' After that, he stopped saying hi to me,' 28-year-old Kudermetova told the former doubles world No 1, as per The Express. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Kudermetova had married Sergei Demekhine, her coach since the age of 15 who also happens to be 13 years her senior, in a private ceremony in 2017. Their marriage, however, has not come in the way of their professional relationship as Demekhine continues to coach Kudermetova. The world No 42, who had gone as far as the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open, had won her maiden Grand Slam title last month at Wimbledon by clinching the women's doubles title along with Belgium's Elise Mertens. Rune, who had charted a meteoric rise through the ITF Junior Circuit and had announced himself on the ATP Tour with his victory over Novak Djokovic in the 2022 Paris Masters, was reportedly romantically linked to Caroline Donzella, a Dutch-Italian high-end real estate agent based in Monte Carlo, in 2023. Donzella, whom Rune had initially referred to as his 'friend', was spotted cheering for the Danish player at the 2023 Wimbledon. Both Rune and Kudermetova, meanwhile, are competing at the National Bank Open which is taking place at Canada's Toronto and Montreal for men and women respectively. Rune has advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Frenchmen Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 and Alexander Muller 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets. Kudermetova, meanwhile, lost her third-round clash against world No 2 Coco Gauff of USA 6-4, 5-7, 2-6 after victories over Cristina Bucsa and Olga Danilovic. She is also competing in the women's doubles along with Mertens, the pair advancing to the next round after beating the Brazilian-German pair of Beatriz Haddad Maia and Laura Siegemund 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Jannik Sinner sacked coach before Wimbledon because of leak of confidential information: Report
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner made major changes to his support staff in recent weeks, including the surprise dismissal of his coach Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio just before Wimbledon. Despite the change, the Italian star went on to win the prestigious All England Club title, defeating World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Sinner has now reunited with his former fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara. Italy's Jannik Sinner reacts after winning a point against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the men's singles final at the Wimbledon(AP) At the time of the split, Sinner stated there was 'no major reason' behind parting ways with Panichi and Badio. However, Italian outlet Corriere della Sera has now reported that Sinner had grown increasingly uncomfortable with certain decisions made by Panichi, both on and off the court. One of the trigger points was reportedly Panichi's decision to leak confidential team information to the media. This included details of Sinner's emotional reaction after losing to Alcaraz at Roland Garros, where he failed to convert three championship points. Panichi had told the press that Sinner cried for 15 minutes in the locker room and was upset at how fans seemed to favour Alcaraz over him. Panichi and Badio, both of whom previously worked with Novak Djokovic, came under scrutiny after their dismissal. Panichi, in particular, was seen as a divisive figure in Sinner's camp, with reports suggesting he frequently defied team rules that restricted public statements without prior clearance. Sinner hinted at broken trust Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam champion, initially downplayed speculation about the departures. 'Nothing big happened. It's not affecting me. I feel ready to compete. I feel free. We reached incredible results in the past with them. We did great work, but I decided to try something different. Nothing crazy happened,' he said during Wimbledon. However, Sinner later admitted that a breakdown in trust led to the overhaul. 'Communication is important for the group to function. You have to trust. We spend a lot of time together throughout the year, and it's important to find the right people,' he explained. The 23-year-old has since brought back Umberto Ferrara, who had left the team last year following an investigation into Sinner's two failed doping tests. It was ultimately revealed that the positive results were due to accidental contamination. Sinner's former physio, Giacomo Naldi, had used a spray containing traces of the banned substance clostebol to treat a cut on his finger. He later massaged Sinner without gloves. The spray had been procured by Ferrara.

Coco Gauff overcomes 14 more double-faults to advance in Montreal
MONTREAL: Coco Gauff overcame 14 more double-faults to beat Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday in the National Bank Open. Two days after surviving 23 double-faults and a third-set tiebreaker against fellow American Danielle Collins, the top-seeded Gauff rallied from a set and break down against Kudermetova to reach the round of 16. "It was a tough match," Gauff said. "I thought I did well mentally, especially on the return. I was playing an opponent that served really well. Obviously, I would like to serve better on my end, but overall, just happy to get through." Gauff, No. 2 in the world behind Aryna Sabalenka, entered the week having lost two straight matches since winning the French Open, falling in her opening matches in Berlin and Wimbledon. "It does give positives that I am winning these matches having literally one part of my game on a crutch," Gauff said. "If I can stand on both feet, then I can only imagine that it will be a lot more straight-forward and a lot easier for me." Graf set up a match with 18-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko, a 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 winner over Marie Bouzkova of Czechia in the night session. Mboko is the last of the nine Canadians left. "It was a very difficult match, I feel like, mentally and physically for me," Mboko said. "I'm just really happy to have come out with the win." McCartney Kessler of the United States upset fourth-seeded Mirra Andreeva of Russia 7-6 (5), 6-4. In the next round, Kessler will face Marta Kostyuk of the Ukraine. Kostyuk beat 15th-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Australia 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Dayana Yastremska of the Ukraine knocked off eighth-seeded Emma Navarro 7-5, 6-4 in a night match. She'll face ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, a 6-0, 7-6 (5) winner over Jaqueline Cristian of Romania in the last match of the day. Tenth-seeded Elina Svitolina beat Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia 7-5, 6-2.
