If the thought of a Stephen King movie makes you want to get up and dance … hoo boy, do I have the flick for you.
'The Life of Chuck,' based on the brilliant King novella, may surprise you if you're used to stuff like 'The Shining' and 'It,' but it's the kind of story that'll lift your spirits rather than scare the stuffing out of you. Along those same lines, a new live-action version of 'How to Train Your Dragon' gives extra dimension to the story of a boy and his adorable scary flying friend. So check out those heartwarming flicks at the cinema but don't forget to stream some TV: Peacock's 'Poker Face' is doing quirky mysteries-of-the-week like a champ these days.

See the best movie of the year (so far), Stephen King adaptation 'The Life of Chuck'
Let's face it, y'all. There have been a lot of terrible Stephen King movies – more than you might think, given how talented that guy is. Much of it comes down to the filmmaker, and with 'Life of Chuck,' director Mike Flanagan proves he understands King like no other. 'He's not writing horror even when he is writing horror,' Flanagan told me of how he tackles King as a reader and a filmmaker. 'He's an optimistic humanist and he's writing about love and humanity.' Also check out my video interview with star Tom Hiddleston where he talks about the importance of those 'Chuck' themes.
By the way, 'Life of Chuck' is the best movie of the year so far, the story of a life told backward and a soulful exploration of humanity and grand existential questions. (Peep my ★★★★ review.)
Soar with the live-action characters of new 'How to Train Your Dragon'
While Pixar and Disney take up most of the conversation when it comes to animated movies, one movie outside the Mouse House that has a deep fandom is 'How to Train Your Dragon.' The original 2010 adventure is a spectacular tale of Viking teen Hiccup and his best dragon friend Toothless. I was a little miffed when I heard there was going to be a live-action remake, and even while it still wasn't necessary, I am happy to report that the take feels as vital as the original. (Peep my ★★★½ review.)
I also put together a parent's guide for the redo and chatted with director Dean DeBlois and cast members about what's different from the first flick, such as teen appeal and an expanded role for Hiccup's friend Astrid. 'The original wasn't broken, so you can't fix it,' says Mason Thames, who plays the live-action Hiccup. 'All we could do was elevate it.'
Stream 'Poker Face,' Natasha Lyonne's starry, standout sleuth show
The second season of the Rian Johnson mystery show 'Poker Face' has featured an endless supply line of guest stars, from Cynthia Erivo and John Mulaney to Kumail Nanjiani and John Cho. And Natasha Lyonne, who plays amateur detective Charlie Cale, wears almost as many hats: actress, director, writer and producer. My bud Patrick Ryan visited the set and chatted with Lyonne, who likens her many roles to being a musician and identified with Jughead from the 'Archie' comic books. 'He was a one-man band, but also a friend of the gang,' she says. 'He just kind of hung out and had instruments around."
"Poker Face" didn't make TV critic Kelly Lawler's list of the best TV shows so far this year, but some pretty good stuff did like "Andor," "The Pitt" and "Overcompensating" – all of which get the Brian Seal of Approval.

5 best new movies to stream this weekend on Netflix, Max, Disney Plus, and more (June 14-15)
Wondering what you should watch this weekend? Every week, the best streaming services roll out a fresh slate of new movies to beat the heat, but figuring out which ones are worth your precious streaming time is harder than you'd think. That's why we're rounding up all the best new movies on streaming to help make that decision an easy one. Leading the pack this week is Disney's latest live-action remake, "Snow White" on Disney Plus. Thriller fans are eating good this week. Apple Plus just got "Echo Valley," a riveting mother-daughter drama starring Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney. You can also find the Daisey Ridley-led "Die Hard" clone "Cleaner" on Max or, if you prefer a healthy dose of absurdity with your high-octane action, Prime Video just got "Deep Cover." Finally, this week Netflix got one of my favorite Gerard Butler movies, the fast-paced thriller "Plane." So without further ado, let's dive into all the best new movies on streaming to watch this weekend. Love 'em or hate 'em, Disney shows no signs of slowing down with cranking out live-action remakes. Its latest, "Snow White," has been mired in controversy since its announcement, and unfortunately, the film doesn't offer much to overshadow that noise. To its credit, it's more watchable than some of the other Disney remakes, and there are a few new songs added into the mix for fans of the original. Those curious about all the chatter can now check out "Snow White" on Disney Plus from the comfort of their own couch. Rachel Zegler takes on the role of the titular princess, who is banished from her kingdom by her ruthless stepmother, played by Gal Gadot. To reclaim her rightful place on the throne, she teams up with a group of magical beings and a bandit leader (Andrew Burnap) to challenge the evil Queen and restore peace to the realm. Watch it now on Disney Plus Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "Echo Valley" is part slow-burn thriller, part tightly coiled mother-daughter drama grounded by masterclass performances from its two leads, Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney. It follows grieving horse trainer Kate Garrett (Moore), whose peaceful life on a secluded Pennsylvania farm is shattered when her estranged daughter Claire (Sweeney) arrives late one night covered in blood that is not her own. Claire claims she got in a fight with her boyfriend, but as details emerge, Kate is forced into a devastating moral crossroads. Written by "Mare of Easttown's" Brad Ingelsby, "Echo Valley" treads similarly gritty ground, offering a tense, emotionally charged descent into moral ambiguity. Watch it now on Apple TV Plus In the mood for something lighter? Prime Video just got a hilarious new action comedy that puts three improv performers — Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed — in a precarious predicament. An undercover cop (Sean Bean) recruits the trio to infiltrate London's criminal underworld by pretending to be the very criminals they've only ever played on stage. Their new gig spirals out of control faster than you can say "zip, zap, zop!" While its action sequences aren't all that exciting, the sharp writing and hilarious performances in "Deep Cover" offer plenty of laughs. Orlando Bloom, in particular, is a hoot as a "serious" actor overly committed to the role of playing the group's muscle, come hell or high water. Watch it now on Prime Video Legendary James Bond director Martin Campbell returns with a "Die Hard"-style action thriller led by "Star Wars" actress Daisy Ridley. Though it wears its inspiration on its sleeve, "Cleaner" still delivers a fast-paced and entertaining ride with plenty of nerve-jangling aerial stunts to keep you on the edge of your seat. "Cleaner" kicks off when a group of radical activists storm an energy company's annual gala, taking 300 hostages in a bold attempt to expose corporate corruption. Fortunately for the guests trapped inside, an ex-soldier turned window cleaner (Ridley) just happens to be on the scene, albeit suspended 50 floors up, when the chaos erupts. Channeling her inner Bruce Willis, she springs into action in a desperate fight to save the day. Watch it now on Max One of my favorite Gerard Butler movies, "Plane," just arrived on Netflix, and it's already crash-landed in the streamer's top 10 list. In this high-octane action thriller, Butler stars as commercial airline pilot Brodie Torrance, who's hoping to wrap up one last flight before reuniting with his daughter. But when a violent storm strikes mid-flight and a lightning bolt knocks out the plane's avionics, Torrance is forced to make an emergency landing. Though he gets the plane down safely, he realizes too late that it's on the remote, pirate-controlled Jolo Islands. Stranded and surrounded by danger, he has to team up with a fugitive passenger (Mike Colter) to outwit local warlords and keep the survivors alive long enough for help to arrive. 'The Life of Chuck' star Matthew Lillard on joining the 'Flanafam': 'Hollywood is such a lonely journey'
After receiving the People's Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Mike Flanagan's movie The Life of Chuck, based on the Stephen King story, has finally hit theatres. With an impressive cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mark Hamill, David Dastmalchian, Jacob Tremblay and Matthew Lillard, it's a striking film that brings up particularly poignant existential questions as we follow the life of Charles "Chuck" Krantz. There's always been a through line of humanity in much of King's work and Flanagan is the perfect person to really lean into those elements for The Life of Chuck. A story told in three acting, in reverse chronological order, we get a glimpse of Hiddleston's Krantz through a billboard that reads, "39 Great Years! Thanks, Chuck!" amid environmental disasters, including a part California falling into the ocean. Marty (Ejiofor) is a teacher who sees the billboard. He doesn't know who Chuck is, but there's a curiosity about who he might be as everyone's approaching the end of the world. Lillard plays Gus, who only a appears for a short conversation with Marty, but it's easily one of the more impactful moments of the whole film. "I couldn't be more thrilled," Lillard told Yahoo Canada about working with Flanagan and joining the "Flanafam," the group the makes up the filmmaker's regular collaborators. "Hollywood is such a lonely journey and having somebody that's like, not only do I want you in this movie, I want you in all my movies, it's like a love letter. So I feel very lucky to have found him on this journey." "And collaborating with him is fantastic. ... He's got this spirit of generosity that's ... unparalleled in terms of my experiences over the last 30 years. I think he's generous, he's funny, he's charming, he's very clear with what he wants, ... and there's freedom within that form. And he does work that I am proud to be a part of." As Gus talks to Marty about the end of the world, the blue-collar working has this beautiful epiphany about life that's incredibly moving. "Going into it I was like, I have a lot of information to deliver in a really small amount of time," Lillard said. "The reality is, I didn't know Mike very well, we had just become friends. I had a very small part. I didn't want to come in and suck on behalf of the film. So it was a little nerve-wracking going in." "At the end of the day, you just want to be good. And so this particular moment and this particular film, I accomplished that goal. I'm really proud of the work." But in a world that feel particularly divisive right now, amid escalating tensions in many places around the world, The Life of Chuck may just be coming out at the perfect time, when we really need nuanced stories about humanity, that can still give us joy. "Everyone wanted to be in last year's Academy Awards sort of cycle, and the reality is that it got pushed, for whatever reason. ... We didn't get to Toronto for a while because we missed that window, and so there's a lot of waiting," Lillard said. "I do think, in a weird way, that the movie is built to be delivered to the people in this moment." "The timing of this, in terms of where the world is now, especially in America, feels like it's a gift. And so I do think the world works in mysterious ways, and hopefully that holds true for people who find it." While The Life of Chuck is particularly great journey to go on, the impact of Lillard's character does also come down to the fact that he is such a beloved actor, whether you watched him in Scooby-Doo, She's All That, the Scream films, Good Girls, or his other work. But as Lillard admitted, sometimes he's just auditioning to get a job, he ultimately wants to be "charmed" by a project." "A lot of times in Hollywood, people ... are constantly trying to make as much money as they possibly can, which is to increase their margins, which is to not pay people a lot of money," Lillard said. "That's [something] that people don't understand, just because you're in a movie doesn't mean you're making a lot of money." "To be motivated, I want to be charmed by the part. I want to find something that I can hold on to and I want to be able to do something really great with the part that's exciting. ... Walking on a Life of Chuck and on the set, ... my job is just to bring me to this role, which is to bring my own humanity and my own take. And so luckily for me, that's what happened. I have a little part in a beautiful film that makes a tiny impact. So I'm really lucky, I feel really lucky."
