Netflix fans rush to binge 'must-see' series after huge Rotten Tomatoes boost
When the first season of Netflix's workplace comedy Tires arrived last year, the raunchy tone and divisive lead Shane Gillis clearly weren't for everyone.
In fact, it wasn't for a lot of people. The show only scored a 40 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the equivalent of the unwanted green splat –and if it hadn't been renewed before its release, you have to wonder whether Netflix would have brought the show back at all.
But now the second season has arrived on the streaming platform and brought with it considerable improvements on the first season – so much so the new episodes currently hold a 80 percent rating on the Tomatometer. Big gains.
Made on a shoestring budget compared to other recent Netflix releases like Fubar or Sirens, Tires sees Gillis play a fictionalised version of himself (also called Shane), who inherits his father's Pennsylvania chain of tire shops.
For fans of The Bear, it's a premise that might sound familiar, with two cousins at the reins. There's wayward manager Will (co-creator Steven Gerben) and firebrand Shane (Shane Gillis), who run through a series of harebrained schemes to try and keep the business afloat.

The show was a self-funded passion project for Gillis, who was fired from Saturday Night Live – before he had even started on the sketch comedy show – for using a racist slur and making offensive jokes on his podcast.

Gillis made the sitcom pilot for his YouTube channel in 2019, before he invested in filming a full, six-episode season, which Netflix then acquired.
While the first season was met with a muted response from critics, the second is already receiving plaudits for a more tasteful level of comedy and feel-good experience, blended with great cast additions and more full-bodied episode arcs.
The show has been dipping in and out of the Netflix ranking of its top 10 TV, with many fans taking to X to praise the storytelling gains Tires has made for its sophomore outing.
@thejollywodger labelled the new season of the show 'sensational', while @Jaspg wrote: 'I'm only three episodes in on season two of Tires and it's better than season one.'

EXCLUSIVE Squid Game director reveals REAL reason Netflix hit has been split into three series - and gives verdict on season four
Squid Game writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed the real reason why the upcoming series of the Netflix hit has been split into two parts. The dystopian survival thriller became an instant hit after it landed on the streaming service in 2021. Fans had to wait three years for the next instalment of the show (series two), which landed in December 2024, and luckily they've only had to wait six months for the third. But that is partly because the second season was cut in half - and many fans have wondered why he made the decision to do so. Speaking exclusively to MailOnline at the Squid Game season three premiere on Thursday, Hwang Dong-hyuk said: 'I originally didn't plan for it to be split into two seasons. 'I was thinking that it'd be a single one, but in the process of writing it, it came out to about 13 episodes, which I thought was too long to put out as a single season. 'And I also thought it was too long when you look at current trends. 'So I thought that we wanted to split it, and if we were to split it, at the end of episode seven, when Seong Gi-hun hits rock bottom after his rebellion failed... 'I thought that was the just the right moment to sort of dividing into two chapters.' One question that a lot of fans want to know the answer to is if there is a fourth coming anytime soon. Hwang Dong-hyuk told us: 'I think that once you watch season three, people will understand why the story should come to a closure here. 'So I don't have any plans for a season four.' The writer then went on to share some very exciting news about some other projects relating to the hit show. He added: 'But I do have some ideas, maybe about a spin off.' Squid Game: The Challenge hit the streaming service in 2023. It follows a group of contestants battling it out for $4.56 million. He said: 'I always thought that having somethings that come out of an original story so that many people can enjoy it further... 'I've always seen it as a good thing. 'Whether or not that is successful, I don't think that is important, what I think is important is that there is more for people to enjoy.' Netflix's official synopsis of the show reads: 'Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children's games. 'Inside, a tempting prize awaits — with deadly high stakes.' The second series saw 456 players return to the game in a bid to win 45.6 billion won. Seong Gi-hun decided to re-enter the game to defeat the Front Man. He tried to rebel against those that are in charge of the evil games, but doesn't get very far after he loses his best friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), shortly after Front Man murdered him. But luckily fans don't have long to wait until they find out what happens next. The star-studded cast includes Lee Jung-jae, Park Gyu-young, Gong Yoo, Lee Byung-hun, Jo Yu-ri and Wi Ha-joon. They are joined by the likes of Roh Jae-won, Lee Seo-hwan, Yim Siwan, Yang Dong-guen and Kim Jun-hee. Neflix dropped the official trailer of the upcoming season earlier this month. While some were left 'disappointed' by Squid Game 2 at the end of last year, others can't wait to see what happens at the end of June. Many rushed to the comments section of the YouTube video to share their excitement. 'Not having to wait 2-3 years between seasons is so refreshing. ' 'The fact that we just waited 7 months for the season 3 instead of 3 years is crazy !' Less than a month!? Thank you for not making us wait until 2028 after the trailer drops, looks [fire emoji]. 'The best decision made with Squid Game is that after waiting almost 4 years, we're getting seasons 2 and 3 in a span of 6 months after an open ending that felt deserved.'

It's Friday the 13th so why not binge these 5 truly terrifying TV shows
If you're wondering why, you saw a bloke in a hockey mask on your way to work this morning, it's because it's Friday the 13th. And while Jason Voorhees might be trying to get to Crystal Lake so he can get busy slaughtering those pesky campers, I know exactly how you should spend this legendarily unlucky day. Specifically, I think you should spend it watching some truly terrifying TV shows. Why? Well, the sun may be shining (not in the Stephen King way), and the birds may be singing, but there's nothing quite like a good scare, is there? That feeling of creeping dread, the tingle down your spine, the sweat in your palms – ok maybe not that last one – can't be beat. And as there are 140 days or so before Halloween and the start of the official spooky season, I think it being Friday the 13th is the perfect excuse to indulge in monsters and morbid. So here are five truly horrifying TV shows that – if you're a fan of things that go bump in the night – you need to check out. If you like feeling horribly anxious and enjoy spotting hidden ghosts, then I can't recommend The Haunting of Hill House enough. This nightmarish Netflix series is based on Shirley Jackson's book of the same name and was directed by horror mastermind Mike Flanagan. A twisty-turny series, the show follows the Crain family as they deal with the horrors that lurk in their new home and try to escape from the paranormal entities that lurk within. To say The Haunting of Hill House is scary would be a massive understatement. It's genuinely disturbing at times, and one of the few shows that had me hiding behind a cushion waiting for the horrors to end. Still, it's not all chills and thrills; the series has a deeply satisfying story that's as complex as the ghosts are horrifying. Don't take my word for it, though. Quentin Tarantino has called it his favourite Netflix show ever, and that's a man who knows a great story when he sees one. The Haunting of Hill House can be streamed on Netflix now From is kind of like Lost's younger brother who's going through a goth phase. What does that tortured metaphor mean? Well, like Lost and similar series, From is a mystery box show, but one that's full of horrible monsters like the worst jack-in-the-box imaginable. If you've never had the pleasure of watching, the show follows the Matthews family after they have the bad fortune to drive through a small, unnamed town while on a road trip across the US. Unfortunately, once they drive in, they find themselves trapped – alongside several other residents – and besieged by weird creatures. Shows like this, which are slow builds and rely on teasing the audience, are naturally very reliant on their cast to keep viewers engaged, and I think the From cast is exceptional. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they're the show's secret weapon – especially Harold Perrineau, who plays the town's poor put-upon sheriff. If the summer heat's getting you down, might I recommend The Terror, a series set in the frozen wilderness of the North Pole. All three seasons of From is available to stream on NOW Based on Dan Simmons's 2007 novel of the same name, the show follows the crews of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror as they explore the Arctic Archipelago in the hopes of completing the first crossing of the Northwest Passage. Perhaps unsurprisingly, things don't go to plan, and the ships find themselves trapped in the tundra. The Terror documents how both crews try and survive in the icy wasteland as tempers fray, and a mysterious creature makes its presence known. A dark tale wrapped in the clothes of prestige drama (presumably to keep warm), The Terror is a haunting and entertaining story about the thin line between civility and barbarity. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94% is a must-watch for those who love chilling stories. The Terror is available to stream on ITVX Teacup might sound like the type of thing you'd pop on for the kids while you made dinner, but I can't recommend showing this to children. The series follows a group of neighbours who one day find a strange man in a gas mask painting a blue line across their farmland. When they try and cross this line… well, let's just say bad things happen. Shocking and more than a little confusing, Teacup is a surprisingly gory series, which means it won't be for everyone, but if the sight of blood and bone gets your pulse racing, then this may be the series for you. I must admit that the show does lose some steam towards the end, but I'd say the first five or so good, you won't be disappointed when the series takes a turn from overt horror to science fiction. I'm not the only fan of the show either. On Reddit, SMNZ75 wrote he thought they did a fantastic job of 'taking what was pretty much a sci-fi book and making a great horror series'. Teacup is available to stream on Paramount Plus Last but not least, we come to The Outsider because every horror list has to have something written by Stephen King on it; otherwise, he comes to your house at night and gives you nightmares. Anyway, completely made-up stories about the greatest horror author of our time aside, The Outsider boasts an impressive cast including Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo, Julianne Nicholson, and Jason Bateman. More Trending The series tells the story of Detective Ralph Anderson (Mendelsohn) as he investigates the murder and mutilation of a young boy. While Ralph initially believes local coach Terry Maitland is the guilty man, he soon discovers something far more sinister at play. A nightmarish version of NCIS, The Outsider is a dark take on the police procedural we've come to know and love that'll delight those with a fondness for the macabre. The real reason to watch, though, is Cynthia Erivo's performance; she's wicked in this. As you'd imagine, I'm far from the only one to think that as well, with Vulture's Jan Chaney calling her 'superb' in her review.
