Unifor members at DHL Express Canada locked out after refusing to accept concessions

Associated Press4 hours ago

TORONTO, June 8, 2025 /CNW/ - Unifor members at DHL Express Canada were locked out by their employer after midnight on June 8, after the workers refused to accept concessions put forth by the company.
'We will not stand by while DHL locks out our members across the country and threatens to use scabs in an attempt to pressure our members to take concessions. Our members deserve respect and a fair contract,' said Unifor National President Lana Payne.
'We expect DHL to abide by the law on the books, passed unanimously by Parliament, which will come fully into force later this month. A law that bans the use of replacement works in a legal dispute. It is reprehensible that this company thinks they can bust our members' right to fair and free collective bargaining by using scab labour.'
Some concessions the company is pushing include change driver pay system resulting in a loss of money, driving 100 km. to get to their routes or pick up their freight with no compensation. Other concessions involve proposing language that will allow the company to refuse accommodation, laying off employees, and proposing reducing drivers' daily guarantee. The company has also rerouted pickups across the whole country while reducing pay for owner operators.
Hours before the deadline, the employer added numerous new proposals and concessions.
The union's bargaining priorities remain improving working conditions—including access to clean and secure washrooms—securing fair wages, addressing surveillance and automation issues and recognition and respect for workers.
The company filed its intention to lock out workers on June 4 – four days before the deadline to reach an agreement.
'By imposing a lockout, DHL is choosing confrontation over negotiation,' said Unifor Quebec Director Daniel Cloutier.
'This is a serious decision that deprives dedicated workers of their livelihoods. But let's be clear: our members will not be intimidated. They are united, standing strong, and determined to obtain the respect and working conditions they deserve.'
Unifor DHL members voted 97% for strike action if necessary last month.
Unifor represents over 2,100 DHL Express Canada workers who as truck drivers, couriers, warehouse and clerical workers across Canada, at Locals 114 in British Columbia, 700 in Quebec, 755 in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, 4005 in Nova Scotia, 4457 in Ontario and members in DHL Alberta.
Unifor's legal department sent a letter to DHL, cautioning them of hiring scabs –– as anti-scab legislation, which the union campaigned diligently for, is set to come in on June 20. The union firmly believes the timing of the lockout notice is tied to the incoming legislation.
The German-based parcel delivery giant's annual profit is roughly $3.3 billion Euro ($4.6 billion CDN) and revenue from its significant and growing North American enterprise is worth approximately ($9.4 billion CDN).
And yet, the employer is demanding changes and concessions to working conditions that will negatively affect the pay of Unifor DHL members.
Customers in Canada will likely be affected if they use other couriers, including UPS and Loomis, because of integrated contracts with other freight companies.
DHL Express Canada has 50,000 customers, including Temu, SHEIN, Lululemon and Siemens Canada.
The labour dispute could also potentially cause major disruptions to the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, June 13 to 15, due to DHL's responsibility for transporting Formula One vehicles.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.

NASCAR secures fourth manufacturer as Ram enters Truck series in 2026

The NASCAR Truck Series field will feature four manufacturers for the first time in over a decade next season with Ram entering the category, joining Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota. This is a monumental decision that has been rumored for several months, but representatives from Ram and Stellantis finally confirmed it in a public unveiling at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday. Advertisement Speaking in a limited media availability that included NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer John Probst said of the highly anticipated return: 'We are excited to welcome Ram back to the Truck Series, starting in 2026. I know this is something that we've been talking about for a long time, and it's something we don't get to do very often. I think the last time we did this was over 20 years ago when Toyota entered our sport. So this is something that is a big moment for our entire sport and our existing competitors, potential new competitors, our OEMs. 'When we work with our existing OEMs, they have made it loud and clear that they would welcome a new OEM into our sport with open arms. They've been very helpful in that process with Ram and some of the other OEMs we continue to talk with. As we've said before, something we do on the regular is talk not just with our existing OEMs but potential new ones.' Probst continued, outlining the advantages of having an additional manufacturer join the NASCAR Truck Series. 'We're excited to see the depth in the Truck garage grow even deeper with the support of Dodge coming in there. And I think something that is very clear is that they are going to come in here and do this very differently to the recent trend in the Truck Series. We look for them to really energize our fan base, particularly in the Truck Series next year. 'From the NASCAR side, I think this is proof positive of the strength NASCAR has when it comes to attracting those blue chip brands to come in and participate in our sport. So, we are very excited to welcome them back to the NASCAR family, and hopefully that creates a lot of momentum for us to have some more exciting announcements regarding OEMs in the future.' Advertisement Dodge has quite the history in NASCAR, but the brand chose to pull its factory support from all three national divisions ahead of the 2013 season. In the Truck Series, Dodge won the manufacturer's title with Ram in 2001, 2003 and 2004. However, Sunday's announcement does not include a planned return to the Cup Series. At this time, the plans only involve Ram in the Truck Series. understands that they are aiming to have up to four to six entries on the grid for the 2026 season-opener. There is no finalized partnership with an existing team, but should the field size increase as a result of Ram's entry, NASCAR has indicated that they are willing to consider increasing the current field size in Trucks. The Ram 1500 concept race truck unveiled at Michigan resembles a production truck, adopting elements from the Ram Sport Truck lineup (Warlock, Rebel and RHO) with some aerodynamic adjustments to fit NASCAR competition. While the new Ram body must undergo wind tunnel testing, NASCAR hopes to have it approved by August 15th. None of the existing OEMs are planning to update their bodies for the 2026 season. The Truck Series also utilizes spec NT1 engines provided by Ilmor for all manufacturers, removing a hurdle that exists in the higher two divisions. NASCAR hasn't had a new manufacturer enter the sport since Toyota — roughly two decades ago. They also entered the Truck Series first in 2004, before expanding into the Cup Series for the 2007 season. To read more articles visit our website.

New York AG Sues Capital One After Federal Case Dropped

Since taking office, the Trump administration has taken a number of actions to reduce investigations of white collar crime including directing the Justice Department to stop prosecutions under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act which outlaws bribery and corruption in foreign countries, disbanding the Justice Department's Cryptocurrency Enforcement Unit and reducing the size and support of the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section which prosecutes public officials accused of corruption and the IRS' Criminal Investigation Unit. In addition, a number of white collar crime prosecutions begun under the previous administration have been dropped including an action by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau against Capital One. The CFPB complaint had alleged that Capital One promoted its '360 Savings' account as offering one of the highest interest rates in the country while the bank offered a '360 Performance Savings' account that paid out rates as much as 14 times higher. According to the complaint, Capital One 'worked to keep 360 Savings accountholders in the dark about 360 Performance Savings' existence as a distinct savings product with a higher rate. The Bank gave the two products similar names and marketed 360 Performance savings as it had 360 Savings; it eliminated references to 360 Savings on its website and replaced them with references to 360 Performance savings without disclosing that 360 Savings continued to exist as a distinct product., thus implying the products were the same; it did not specifically notify 360 Savings accountholders about the new product and excluded 360 Savings accountholders from a marketing campaign that advertised 360 Performance Savings to Capital One's other customers and it explicitly forbade its employees from proactively telling 360 Savings accountholders about 360 Performance Savings.' Thus, according to the CFPB's complaint 360 Savings accountholders either were not aware of 360 Performance Savings as a separate savings account option or were misled into believing their 360 Savings accounts were 360 Performance Savings accounts with the higher rate. According to the CFPB, the actions of Capital One allowed it to market the 360 Performance Savings account to new customers while avoiding paying more than $2 billion in interest to its existing 360 Savings account holders. After the CFPB lawsuit against Capital One was dropped, NY Attorney General Letitia James picked up the gauntlet and sued Capital one on state and federal law violations that allege the same wrongdoing. According to Attorney General James, 'New York families work hard to save money for their futures, and they deserve every dollar of interest they are promised. Capital One assured high returns with no catches, then pulled the rug out from under their customers and hoped nobody would notice. Big banks are not allowed to cheat their customers with false advertising and misleading promises' She emphasized that 'with compound interest, even a small difference in rates adds up over time to create large differences in savings, meaning customers who stayed in 360 Savings accounts lost out on significant interest payments. A customer who put $10,000 in a 360 Savings account in September 2019 would have earned $186 of interest after five years. If the same customer had switched to a 360 Performance Savings account, they would have earned $1,090 of interest over the same period. Collectively, New York customers lost out on millions of dollars of interest compared to what they would have received with 360 Performance Savings accounts, while Capital One pocketed the difference.' The action of Attorney General James appears to be just the latest example of a trend of state Attorneys General picking up cases where formerly the Justice Department and other federal agencies would take the lead. California Attorney General Rob Bonta is investigating and prosecuting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) disclosures particularly as they related to 'greenwashing' which is the practice of companies misleading investors about the environmental or social impact of their products or operations while the California, Michigan, Minnesota and NY Attorneys General are picking up the slack in enforcement actions regarding cryptocurrency crimes.
