Bruce Springsteen on Visiting the Set of ‘Deliver Me from Nowhere': It's Interesting to ‘See Your Grandmother's House Again'
Bruce Springsteen is one of the last titans of rock and roll not to have received a major biopic in recent years, but that will change when Scott Cooper's 'Deliver Me from Nowhere' hits theaters later this year. The film stars Jeremy Allen White as the legendary New Jersey rocker during the early '80s, when he was both gearing up for the biggest commercial success of his career with 'Born in the U.S.A.' and working through his depression on the haunting album 'Nebraska.'
Appearing on Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast to promote the documentary 'Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,' Springsteen discussed Cooper's approach to the film.

'They pitched the idea, and I said, 'It sounds like fun,'' Springsteen said. 'It's an interesting concept, because it's only a couple of years out of my life. It's '81, '82, and centered around the creation of that particular record while I was simultaneously recording 'Born in the USA' and also going through some personal difficulties that I've been living with my whole life. But it's fantastic.'
Springsteen also noted that while he couldn't attend all of the filming, visiting the set offered him a uniquely nostalgic experience. 'I was on tour during a lot of it, so they filmed a good amount of it without me there,' he said. 'But I was on set sometimes. It was interesting to see it played out, to see your grandmother's house again, and to go inside and get a general feeling of what it was like when you were very young. So I enjoyed all those parts of it.'
Springsteen has previously praised White's performance in the film, from both an acting and musical perspective. 'Jeremy is such a terrific actor that you just fall into it,' he said during a January appearance on SiriusXM's E Street Radio. 'He's got an interpretation of me that I think the fans will deeply recognize, so he's done a great job. I've had a lot of fun being on the set when I can get there.'
'Deliver Me from Nowhere' does not have a release date, but 20th Century Studios will release it theatrically later this year.

That joyous privilege and the power of practical effects was top of mind for 'The Penguin' star Colin Farrell and makeup designer Mike Marino, accepting the 2025 IndieWire Honors Wavelength award for their striking partnership in HBO's gritty superhero spinoff. 'We were two big kids in a really vast sandbox,' said Farrell at the Los Angeles event on June 5. 'Both of us grew up watching genre films. I grew up watching Danny DeVito. 'Just clay, glue, rubber, inspiration, and the intention to create something special. There was no AI involved here. No shortcuts, just time, thought, and trust. Colin Farrell was fully committed.' Academy Award nominee Farrell reflected on his experience growing up 'enthralled' by Burgess Meredith's performance as The Penguin. He also shared the fear he felt taking on the role at first. 'Matt Reeves wrote the film 'The Batman,' and I was lucky enough to get the role of The Penguin in that. Then, Lauren LeFranc wrote this show, but it was only when I saw Mike's design of the visage of Oz Cobb that I couldn't leave it. Before that I was struggling to think of what I could bring to the project. I was going, 'I'm just going to be flat as fuck and it's going to be terrible.'' But looking at Marino's design for the first time, Farrell said, 'I couldn't believe it. I kind of got emotional because as I said, I'm 49 going on 10 sometimes and I just got so man is an extraordinary, extraordinary artist. I am so grateful.' He went to thank the legendary Christopher Tucker, the makeup artist on 'The Elephant Man' who inspired Marino to take up the craft. Farrell continued, 'Things are ever shifting now in a business where everything is going towards tech, and I understand that. I'm not like campaigning for pigeons with notes in their talons. But I also notice that there is a kind of edging away from practical makeup and the magic and the artistry and the tactility and the immediacy and the beauty of practical makeup.' Speaking on existential evolutions within the industry, Marino said, 'It takes many thousands of steps to do something so realistic. When you think you know what someone looks like in your mind and then you want to see it come to life, it's a huge task. We're in time when AI can create basically anything convincingly right now. That does make it a substitute for human creativity. If we want to protect the soul of filmmaking, we have to protect the people who make it.' The Weeknd Might Not Be Retiring His Music Persona After All
The Weeknd has teased that Hurry Up Tomorrow— his sixth album and upcoming film of the same name— also marks the end of the artist fans have grown to love for over 15 years. However, that may not necessarily be the case. While promoting the film at CinemaCon 2025, Abel Tesfaye told EW that this moment feels like both a death and resurrection. 'It feels like it [the end of the Weeknd]. I mean, I've kind of toyed with the idea in the past with albums,' he noted. 'But it could also just be a rebirth. Who knows?' Back in January, the 35-year-old announced plans to retire his alter ego. 'It's a headspace I've gotta get into that I just don't have any more desire for,' he explained to Variety. 'You have a persona, but then you have the competition of it all. It becomes this rat race: more accolades, more success, more shows, more albums, more awards and more No. 1s. It never ends until you end it.' Hurry Up Tomorrow marks the conclusion in the trilogy that began with 2020's After Hours, which was followed by 2022's Dawn FM. The film follows a fictionalized version of himself, also named Abel, who gets taken on an insane ride by a seductive stranger, Anima (Jenna Ortega). Director Trey Edward Shults, shared with EW in February that he 'tried to make the movie in a way where, for his fans and people who want to approach it at that level, I hope it's very satisfying and you get a good meal out of it.' Shults confirmed that it was an 'absolute possibility' that the movie would be The Weeknd's last hurrah chapter, adding 'For people that aren't his fans and don't know anything about him or even care about the final capping of the Weeknd, I think you still have a great movie to go through.' The Weeknd's ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow' Earns $3.3 Million Box Office Debut
The Weeknd's Hurry Up Tomorrow feature film experienced the chart-topping success shared by the singer's album of the same name. According to Variety, the movie, which stars the singer as well as Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan, earned $3.3 million in its opening against a $15 million budget. The debut landed Hurry Up Tomorrow at No. 6 at the box office. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, Hurry Up Tomorrow stars the Grammy-winning artist as a musician plagued by insomnia. In the film, he is pulled into an odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence. 'I tried to make the movie in a way where, for his fans and people who want to approach it at that level, I hope it's very satisfying and you get a good meal out of it,' explained Shults. The chart-topping singer also detailed his motivation behind the thrilling project. 'Failure is the best school,' relayed the 35-year-old to The New York Times. 'This film is emotionally cathartic. It brought the love back, the joy back into what I always loved about film.' In a conversation with HypeBeast, Ortega elaborated on the 'environment' created by Shults while filming. 'Working with Trey is so singular. I can't compare it to any other experience that I've had on set, and I've been doing this for over 12 years. I love challenges. I love trying new things. Trey created an environment where it felt like you were free to try whatever you wanted,' described the 22-year-old. 'Music is such an important part of my life and who I am as a person, so having music intertwined was exciting — getting to watch the companion process come together in real time. Being able to combine film and music — the combination of the score and a facial expression — has the power to ignite something in people. This is a perfect marriage of the two.'
