Indian Express20-07-2025
India's professional landscape is undergoing a dynamic transformation, with new urban centres stepping into the spotlight. Once overshadowed by the country's major metros, these emerging cities are gaining traction as vibrant hubs for jobs, innovation, and growth. Fueled by infrastructure development, expanding industries, and a steady influx of skilled professionals, these tier two and three regions in the country are presenting newer economic opportunities.
In its inaugural list of Cities on the Rise in India, LinkedIn highlights the top ten emerging cities in India. Let's get started:
In the list of the top ten, Visakhapatnam tops the list as a major industrial and employment hub. As stated in the report, the city is developing various tech-driven companies and the pharmaceutical industry to create more jobs. The report states that the government is focusing on building infrastructure, which could be a reason for the transformation.
Second on the list is Ranchi, with its hospitality ventures, new retail outlets, smart city initiatives, and improved connectivity making Jharkhand's capital a go-to destination for professionals, reveals the report.
Known for its cultural sites, Vijayawada is drawing investments with more IT players setting up shop and metro and airport expansions on the cards.
Located in Maharashtra, Nashik is expanding its economic canvas. The city is attracting a growing number of data and IT companies, signalling its emergence as a tech-friendly destination. Alongside this digital influx, Nashik's automobile and defence manufacturing sectors are fueling a surge in real estate development.
Positioned as an emerging tech powerhouse, Raipur is experiencing a surge in industry interest across semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and pharmaceuticals, mentions the report, adding that initiatives like Naya Raipur are acting as a catalyst for infrastructure investments.
Blending entrepreneurial energy with innovative urban design, Rajkot is embracing sustainable growth through concepts like sponge cities, eco-friendly schools, and climate-resilient infrastructure. The MSME ecosystem, along with road connectivity, is making it an attractive destination for professionals and businesses alike, states the report.
Merging its rich heritage with ambitious modernisation, Agra—famously known as the City of the Taj—is witnessing a shift through the expansive 12,000-hectare New Agra project. With manufacturing clusters, the initiative is fueling economic expansion and creating a wave of employment opportunities across the region, as mentioned in LinkedIn's report.
Renowned as the Temple City of India, this southern Tamil Nadu hub is rapidly advancing its infrastructure with state-of-the-art facilities. These developments are drawing increased interest from industry leaders—especially in the technology and agriculture sectors—who are establishing a firm presence in the region, mentions the report.
Vadodara is undergoing a wave of development through numerous construction initiatives. The growth is evident in sectors such as urban infrastructure, healthcare, housing, and transportation, marking a significant shift in the city's economic and structural landscape.
Known for its heritage and vibrant culture, Jodhpur is becoming a magnet for young professionals seeking affordable living and a tight-knit community vibe. The rise of decentralised job opportunities, expanding startup ecosystem, and the arrival of major corporate players like Genpact are fueling its transformation.
India's next chapter of economic growth is being written not just in boardrooms and metro skylines, but in its emerging cities—each with its own identity, ambition, and strategic edge. It seems that the future of work is no longer confined to traditional hotspots.
