
Chennai Metro Rail finally completes tunnel between Ayanavaram and Perambur
Chennai Metro Rail has finally constructed a tunnel between Ayanavaram and Perambur for the ₹63,246-crore phase II project, more than one-and-a-half years after the work began. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) 'Kalvarayan' bored a tunnel running to a length of 867 metres and made a breakthrough at Perambur on Tuesday. With this, Chennai Metro Rail has finished 11 tunnels so far for the phase II project.
In the 118.9 km phase II project which will have three corridors (Madhavaram-SIPCOT, Light House-Poonamallee, and Madhavaram-Sholinganallur), 42.6 km has been planned underground, and there will be 48 stations. Ayanavaram-Perambur underground stretch is one of the sections in the Madhavaram-SIPCOT corridor of the phase II project.
According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), it was a complex tunnel and they faced a lot of difficulties in completing it. The machine drilled under densely populated areas, railway tracks and platforms of Perambur Railway Station during the course of tunnelling.
'The entire tunnelling drive was well managed within the allowable minimum settlements and extensive instrumentation and monitoring was ensured throughout the drive,' a release said.
Besides this, one of the major challenges the CMRL faced was to complete the station's diaphragm wall (which is crucial for the TBM to make a breakthrough) at Perambur. Though the machine finished boring more than 95 percent of the distance, it was kept waiting outside the Perambur station and was unable to make a breakthrough. The construction of the Perambur station, similar to many stations in the Madhavaram-SIPCOT corridor, faced a setback as the tender floated for this work was cancelled a few years ago. This delayed the construction process substantially.

According to a DMRC statement, the tunnel connects Maa Anandmayee Marg to Tughlakabad Railway Colony on the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor. The breakthrough was achieved by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) after completing a 792-metre stretch in presence of Delhi Health and Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, DMRC Managing Director Dr Vikas Kumar, and other senior officials, it said. The corporation said TBMs are designed to bore through various soil and rock layers while minimizing disruption to the surface. They are especially effective in urban settings and have been extensively used in previous metro phases. DMRC said the tunnel, located at an average depth of 18 metres, is one of two parallel tunnels being built for up and down movement on the corridor. The breakthrough on the second tunnel is expected by July 2025. A total of 566 tunnel rings, each with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres, were installed using the Earth Pressure Balancing Method (EPBM), the statement said. The precast concrete segments used in the tunnel lining were manufactured at a mechanised casting yard in Mundka and steam-cured for early strength. DMRC said ground movement was carefully monitored during the tunnelling to avoid any surface settlement under existing structures. Under Phase IV, 40.1 km of underground metro lines are being constructed, with the Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor accounting for 19.3 km of that stretch, it added. The latest development marks another step forward in the ongoing expansion of the Delhi Metro network, aiming to enhance connectivity and ease urban transportation challenges in the national capital, it said. Chennai Metro blamed for balcony collapse, rail body says claims ‘unfounded'

Motorists, vendors hit rough patch on OMR-ECR link road
Chennai: 'Inconvenience today for a better tomorrow' reads the message on barricades erected by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on the OMR-ECR link road leading to Sholinganallur junction. However, the magnitude of inconvenience caused is far too much to tolerate, say road-users and shopkeepers along the 900m stretch of Kalaignar Karunanidhi Salai. Work on CMRL phase-2 corridor 3 worsened problems by reducing road width and adding to dirt and dust. "One has to search for the road amid all the rubble and stones and dust. The road level dipped owing to construction work. Last week, an elderly man fell off his bike on the slippery stretch and injured himself. No one took action, not even to lay a temporary road," said Saravanan, who owns a shop on the stretch. Most shopkeepers, who earlier used to display products outside their shops, now don't. "Dust accumulates quickly. Vehicles are bound to get dirty if parked outside even for a few minutes," said a resident of the area. The state of the road worsens as one progresses towards the Sholinganallur signal. Construction debris and material spill on the road, making the commute difficult. Asked why some portions did not have barricades, the contractor of a private firm in charge of the metro work on the stretch said, "Barricades can only be erected when there is a stable road. Unfortunately, to lay the road, macro drainage work [to facilitate water flow and prevent flooding] has to be completed, and that rests with the Highways. We have also been pressing for laying a temporary road on the stretch." Contractor Murugan, in charge of the roadwork, said macro drainage work to facilitate easy flow of floodwater and drainage was completed and only the road-laying work remained. One look at the stretch, however, tells a different story. Residents rue that the pitiable plight continued for more than three months. When contacted, Ananthraj, ADE, city roads, highways department, said steps would be taken to lay a road within a week. "Debris will be cleared, and steps will be taken to level the road," he added. The 45km corridor 3 of CMRL Phase 2 project, under construction, extends from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri Sipcot.
