NAREDCO seeks faster approval for real estate projects to boost supply

Agency:
New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Realtors' body NAREDCO on Friday demanded that the government streamline the approval process for development of real estate projects to boost supply of housing and commercial properties.
National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) also announced the 17th edition of its flagship National Convention, which will be held during August 29-30 in the national capital. The convention's official logo was unveiled by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
In a press conference held here, NAREDCO Chairman Niranjan Hiranandani expressed concern over fall in sales of affordable housing because of several factors, including high land cost that makes development of low-cost homes very difficult for private builders.
He also spoke about huge shortage of skilled workforce for construction of real estate projects and suggested need for collaboration between the government and industry associations to train unskilled workers.
'At one end we have a problem of unemployment and at the other end we have shortage of skilled workers," Hiranandani added.
NAREDCO President G Hari Babu demanded that the central and state governments streamline the approval process for real estate projects as this would result in faster development with reduced input costs.
He also pointed about delays in getting registration certificates from real estate regulatory authorities to launch projects.
On the affordable housing, Hari Babu stressed on the need to focus on slum redevelopment across all states to free land parcels for development of real estate projects.
'Land is a problem for private real estate developers, not for the government," he quipped.
On the upcoming convention, Hari Babu said more than 1,000 people are expected to participate in the two-day event.
'The sector's ability to attract global capital, improve last-mile project delivery, and serve end-users depends on how quickly we resolve policy friction points like delays in approvals, inadequate rental frameworks, and high construction input costs," the NAREDCO President said. PTI MJH TRB

He alleged that 'these two very average 'minds' beat ALL of the Super Geniuses on Wall Street, thousands of them," implying the performance was due to insider trading. Trump also questioned whether authorities were 'looking into this?" 'Crooked Nancy Pelosi, and her very 'interesting" husband, beat ever Hedge Fund in 2024. '90% Of India Makes Less Than Rs 25k A Month...': Jay Kotak On ICICI Bank's MAB Hike

Last Updated: Jay Kotak criticized ICICI Bank's hike in minimum balance to Rs 50,000, noting 90% of Indians earn under Rs 25,000 monthly. He suggested a 'Digital First' approach for inclusivity. Jay Kotak, the co-head of Kotak811 and the son of Uday Kotak, has reacted sharply on ICICI Bank's announcement to hike the minimum balance requirement for savings account to Rs 50k from Rs 10k earlier opened on or after August 1, 2025. Kotak emphasized that every Indian must access financial sector, given that 90% of India makes less than Rs 25,000 per month. This move is aimed at expanding its premium customer base, a banker told NDTV Profit on condition of anonymity. The chart from the World Inequality Database (2021) shows India's stark income distribution, where 90% of the population earns below ₹25,000 per month. The bottom half earns less than ₹9,500, while only the top 5% make over ₹64,380, and the top 3% cross ₹1 lakh. Kotak, however, agreed that the physical cost to serve may be high, but he shared that 'Digital First' might be the solution. 'If banks don't do it, fintechs will. Banking should be for all Indians," he added. In metro and urban branches, the minimum average monthly balance (MAMB) will be Rs 50,000, up from the earlier Rs 10,000. In semi-urban branches, it will rise to Rs 25,000 from Rs 5,000, while in rural branches, the requirement will double to Rs 10,000 from Rs 5,000. The higher MAMB will apply only to new accounts opened after August 1. Customers who fail to meet the requirement will face a penalty of 6% of the shortfall or Rs 500, whichever is lower. The move marks a significant shift for one of India's largest private lenders, especially as other banks are softening their penalty structures — State Bank of India, for instance, has already scrapped all minimum balance charges. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. PVR Inox banks on good movie releases, OTT fatigue for profitability: MD

Cinema exhibitor PVR Inox is looking to build on the momentum of a strong first quarter, tapping new good movie releases and consumer fatigue with OTT as it seeks to return to profitability, according to its Managing Director Ajay Bijli. Having recorded a 12 per cent year-on-year growth in people visiting the company's cinemas at 3.4 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal, despite a subdued April, the business has bounced back, Bijli told PTI. "We are obviously very happy that business has bounced back. We've always been very confident about the fact that Indian consumers will always consider going out and watching movies on the big screen as the number one form of entertainment," he noted. Watching movies on the big screen will coexist with all the other formats of consuming content, Bijli added. Asked when the company expects to be in the black, Bijli said, "Normally, I don't give any all I can say is that the momentum is there, and all the movies that are coming up are in the public domain". July has started very well with movies, such as Saiyaara, Superman, Jurassic Park: Rebirth, F1 Fantastic Four: First Steps and Mahavtar Narsimha, he said, adding that two big movies -- Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie and War 2, which is a strong franchise, are already lined up for August 14 release. "People already know that there's a huge August 15 the lineup at least gives us the confidence and people's behaviour to come out, (after) getting a little bit of fatigue factor from OTT -- it is giving us an indication that occupancies will only improve from here on," Bijli said without sharing guidance on the timelines for profitability. In the first quarter of 2025-26, PVR Inox reported a narrowing of consolidated loss after tax to Rs 54.5 crore, mainly due to good content movies driving up footfall and revenue growth. It had posted a consolidated loss after tax of Rs 179 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal. Its consolidated revenue from operations in the first quarter stood at Rs 1,469.1 crore compared to Rs 1,190.7 crore in the year-ago period. "What we need to do is make sure that we are delivering a great offering to the consumer when they come out, and just rely on the content makers to continue to make movies which connect with the audience," Bijli said.
