Winning mindset matters in big games, says Jayawardene on MI team culture
Having won five titles, the storied franchise is one step away from reaching another IPL final.
With Sai Sudharsan looking unstoppable in the middle, Titans were on course to chase down 229 in the knock-out game on Friday but individual brilliance from the likes of Jasprit Bumrah enabled Mumbai Indians to get over the line.
Like they usually do, Mumbai Indians were slow starters this season before lifting their game in the second half of the tournament.
Jaywardene gave his thoughts on what makes them tick on the big stage.
"Well, when you have a winning culture, it is easier to try and have that same thing going through. Even when you get a new group, we still have a very experienced co-group within our ranks.
"So, the conversations that we have, planning and everything is about, how can we get better, how can we push through," he said referring to the core including Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Bumrah, who have been part of the team's triumphant campaigns over the years.
The seniors know all about winning and they try to inculcate the same spirit in the youngsters who join the squad.
"That winning mentality itself comes through from those senior players and having that experience, guys who have won trophies does help and my job is to try and cultivate that for the new guys who are coming into the spot.
"After the big auction, we had quite a few new faces, but I think telling them about the history of Mumbai and how we go, how we operate and have that attitude that we will never die from a situation, we will always fight through. So, I think that is shown today," said the Sri Lankan great.
Bumrah massive asset for us, Rohit showed he is made for big stage While Bumrah got them back in the match by castling Washington Sundar with a yorker, Rohit rode his luck early to make 81 off 50 balls after being dropped twice in the powerplay.
On the lead pacer, who returned from a long injury lay-off in the middle of the season, Mahela said: Tthere are definitely no concerns when he comes back because the reputation itself carries through and he was quite confident.
"He had bowled few sessions, he was nailing those yorkers and all that. He is a massive asset for us, the experience that he carries through to the team and the situation that he has been bowling for us as well.
"It is great to have him around the group, the experience that he brings, talking to Ashwini (left-arm pacer) in that last over (of the match)." Mahela said Rohit's hand at the top of the order was equally important.
"Rohit was brilliant. He let Johnny take control initially and then when he knew it was his time and the bowler then he picked and he got into a brilliant tempo.
"The pressure that he put on the two spinners, especially Sai and Rashid in that situation was absolutely brilliant and that is what Rohit does. Big games he does have a different gear that he plays. That is what experience does and he cannot replace that." He also said rookie pacer Ashwani Kumar is a fine talent and needs to be groomed properly by the franchise.
Didn't expect heavy dew The heavy dew in the second half of the game aided Sudharsan and Washington who were collecting boundaries at will in the run chase. Mahela said they forced to change their plans considering the unexpected dew.
"I didn't anticipate dew because I was here practising and knew yesterday's game as well (Qualifier 1), there wasn't much dew.
"I looked at the wicket, we had a chat, we felt that against this opposition that batting first is the right call. So, we played tactically, brilliantly, the way we batted, the tempo was great and we put runs on the board and took that early wicket of Shubman as well, which was a massive one.
"But halfway stage, I saw the dew coming in...So, we had to make a call, there was a, like planning wise, we were thinking, long boundaries, the way we gripped, the leg spinner might be an option for us, but we then took that out and then bowl Ashwini.
"Changed our plans to bowl yorkers, as much as we can, because the balls were skidding through." Mahela praises Sudharsan Mahela has been left impressed with the way Sudharsan batted this season. He backed the left-hander to do well on his maiden Test tour of England.
"Well, I have enjoyed his batting. I have to be honest, he is a good lefty, good cricketing shots, has a good head on his shoulder as well.
"So, I am sure he will do well. It will be a challenge in England, like we have all done that in the past, but I think he will find a way to do what he needs to do," Mahela added.

India's Likely Squad For Asia Cup 2025: Huge Shubman Gill Surprise, This Top Star Out
As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prepares to name the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, a number of big surprises could be in store. With Suryakumar Yadav set to lead the team, several reports suggest that the Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee is gearing up to snub some of the biggest stars in the game. Despite India head coach Gautam Gambhir once suggesting that the T20I team should be selected purely on the basis of Indian Premier League (IPL) performance, it sems like the selectors are set to overlook certain IPL performers. Batters: Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh It doesn't look like the selectors will alter the batting combination much, with the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav set to be named in the team, with Shubman Gill being the only addition to the roster, when compared to the T20I series against England. There are some doubts over Rinku Singh's inclusion in the team for the Asia Cup, but it looks like he will be included. If Gill is included, there will be no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the team. Wicketkeepers: Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma While there's no doubt over Sanju Samson's place in the team, the backup wicket-keeper's place is being strongly fought for. One of Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel will join Sanju Samon in the Asia Cup squad, while it is all but confirmed that Rishabh Pant isn't a part of the plans. If form is considered, Jitesh might just edge Jurel in the squad. All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube / Nitish Kumar Reddy When it comes to all-rounders, the likes of Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar seem to be sure-shot selections, but there's a place for one more pace-bowling all-rounder, which is open. The likes of Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy are the top two contenders for the role. In all likelihood, Dube might be preferred over Reddy, purely because of form. The biggest question mark when it comes to bowling line-up selection is over Jasprit Bumrah, who didn't even play 5 Tests against England. If Bumrah plays the Asia Cup, there will be a question mark over his selection for the West Indies Tests too. Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy are certain picks in the bowling unit. One of Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishan is set to be picked, though the choice will be a tough one, especially if Jasprit Bumrah is playing.

At a time when questions loom over the veteran opener's longevity, the remark has reignited debate around Rohit's career span. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "The man about whom so many people speak rubbish, Rohit Sharma — I said that day that Rohit will be my man, the man, my man," Yograj told News18 CricketNext. "The way he batted, his batting on one side and the rest of the team's batting on the other side. His innings on one side and the rest of the world on the other. "That's his class. You can say, 'Rohit, aapki hume 5 saal aur zarurat hai yaar ' (Rohit, we need you for five more years, man), so please do more for your country, work on your fitness and everything. Poll Do you think Rohit Sharma should retire soon? Yes, it's time for him to retire No, he should continue playing Maybe, depending on his performance I have no opinion on this "Put four men on him, make him run 10 kilometres every morning. He has the class to play till 45 years of age, if he wants," he added. Yograj also advised Rohit to continue playing domestic cricket to keep up his fitness. "I believe you should play domestic cricket; the more you play that, the fitter you'll be. Who got the Man of the Match in the final? Rohit Sharma. "So you should only talk about things that you know. If you want to talk about his game and fitness, do that only if you have played at some level. Do you feel ashamed talking like this?" Yograj said. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Ravichandran Ashwin has clarified his remarks on Chennai Super Kings' signing of Dewald Brevis for IPL 2025, saying his comments were misunderstood. Ashwin said that there was no wrongdoing by CSK, the player, or the IPL authorities after CSK issued a statement. After Chennai Super Kings (CSK) gave their side on the Dewald Brevis signing, Ravichandran Ashwin has now come forward to clear the confusion around his earlier remarks. Ashwin had suggested that CSK may have paid extra to bring in Brevis as an injury replacement during the IPL 2025 season. Ashwin clarifies earlier remarks on Brevis Ashwin explained that his comments were misunderstood and blown out of proportion on social media. The former Indian spinner said he never accused anyone of wrongdoing and only shared facts on his YouTube show. He added that the media twisted his statements to suit their own narrative. 'I just want to say this. I focus more on cricket rather than the chatter on social media. We make videos on YouTube to give our opinions. People who watch our videos, don't do any wrongdoing. However, those who don't watch can twist the statements according to their whims and fancies. In today's world, news can be made based on one statement or headline,' Ashwin said his show Ash Ki Baat. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ashwin also reacted to CSK's official statement, saying the franchise did the right thing by clarifying as many fans had doubts about Brevis being signed for INR 2.20 crore. Ashwin stressed that there was no mistake from CSK, the player, or the IPL authorities, and the clarification was simply to avoid confusion. More from First Cricket Jasprit Bumrah confirms availability for Asia Cup 2025 to Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee: Report 'In today's time, there is a need to clarify the right things as well. There is no mistake by anyone; clarification on this matter has arisen from the fact that a lot of people have doubts. The fact is that no mistake has been made by the franchise, the player and the governing body,' Ashwin added. On Saturday, CSK issued a statement saying that they followed all the rules and procedures while signing Brevis as a replacement player. Brevis was not bought in the IPL 2025 mega auction, but CSK later signed him as Gurjapneet Singh's replacement. CSK stated that they paid Rs 2.20 crore to Brevis as Gurjapneet was bought for that amount in the auctions. 'Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,' the franchise stated.
