Samsung to invest Rs 1K crore to expand its TN plant: Rajaa
CHENNAI: South Korean electronics giant Samsung will invest Rs 1,000 crore to expand its existing manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Industries Minister T R B Rajaa said on Friday.
The announcement comes in spite of the strike by employees of the company associated with CITU-backed union previously and the issue is yet to be fully settled. The decision to invest despite that underscores the company's continued confidence in Tamil Nadu's workforce, Rajaa said.
On Samsung, he alleged that there were attempts to divert the investments coming to Tamil Nadu to other states, 'thinking it was an opportunity to fish in troubled waters.
However, it was only due to proper handling of this issue by the chief minister that the workers returned to their jobs,' he said. Importantly, Rajaa also announced in the Assembly the setting up of a Taiwanese Industrial Park with an eye on attracting Rs 10,000 crore in investment and generating 20,000 jobs.
'Taiwanese investment already forms a critical part of the state's FDI profile,' Rajaa said, adding that the park is intended to support their vendors and bolster long-term manufacturing commitments.
Addressing the media later, Rajaa said MoUs valued at Rs 6,64,180 crore were signed at the 2024 Global Investors Meet (GIM). In India, he said, typically the conversion rate of MoUs to actual investments is around 25% to 30%. However, Tamil Nadu has achieved an extraordinary conversion rate of 72%, surpassing its own initial target of 50%.
'I predicted last year that we would exceed 50%, and we went beyond that to 60%. When I shared this with our CM, he asked when we would reach 70%. I assured him it would be soon. Today, we have surpassed even that,' said Rajaa. Since 2021, Tamil Nadu has secured investments worth Rs 10,27,547 crore, with 722 of 897 MoUs already materialising into tangible projects.
Interestingly, Rajaa highlighted how southern districts, which traditionally lagged behind in industrial growth, have attracted 30.32% of the total investments coming to Tamil Nadu in the last four years. Other key announcements made in the Assembly included the setting up of Guidance Desks in the US, Germany, South Korea, and Vietnam to assist investors.
The state will promote decentralised industrial growth by developing new SIPCOT industrial parks in Kallakurichi, Tenkasi, Sivagangai, Vellore, and Tirupattur. These projects together are expected to bring investments exceeding Rs 2,400 crore and 22,000 jobs. In the under-industrialised coastal district of Nagapattinam, a mini TIDEL Park will be set up to generate 600 IT-sector jobs. Additionally, Rs 120 crore will be allocated for industrial housing to accommodate 2,000 workers in the industrial belt in Kancheepuram.
The Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation will waive inspection fees for term loans during the current financial year, benefiting approximately 1,300 micro, small and medium enterprises. New policies on warehousing and marine food processing are also expected. A seafood export park in Thanjavur is planned with an investment of Rs 200 crore.

Rs 2,000 crore classroom ‘scam' case: Manish Sisodia says won't appear before ACB today
AAP leader Manish Sisodia, who was summoned for questioning by the Delhi Government's Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) Monday morning in connection with the alleged corruption to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore in the construction of classrooms in government schools when the party was in power, said he would not be able to do so. ACB officials said Sisodia conveyed through his counsel that he is preoccupied with other programmes, and will not be able to appear before them at 11 am. The Aam Aadmi Party leader's counsel also said he will file a reply via email. The officials said that once he sends his reply, they will see whether a summons will be issued again. The AAP also said in a statement, 'Manish Sisodia will not be going to ACB on Monday due to a pre-scheduled programme. His lawyer has sent a reply on his behalf'. ACB issued summonses to former AAP ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain on May 3 in connection with the case. Jain was questioned last Friday for over five hours. On April 30, ACB registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the two AAP leaders in connection with alleged corruption in the construction of 12,748 classrooms or semi-permanent structures during the previous AAP government's tenure. Sisodia held the finance and education portfolios in the AAP government, and Jain was the minister of health, industries, power, home, urban development, and the Public Works Department (PWD). Madhur Verma, Joint Commissioner of Police, who heads the ACB, earlier confirmed the FIR's registration. BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Harish Khurana, and Neelkant Bakshi filed a complaint in 2019 alleging financial irregularities in the construction of classrooms in Delhi Government schools in three zones. They said the construction cost per room stood at approximately Rs 24.86 lakh, exponentially higher than the roughly Rs 5 lakh it takes for similar constructions in Delhi. The BJP leaders also alleged that the project was awarded to 34 contractors, most of whom were associated with the AAP. According to ACB officials, 12,748 semi-permanent structures were supposed to be built for Rs 1,200 per square feet, but the cost shot up to around Rs 2,292 per sq ft during construction. ACB is probing the cost escalation.

Who Is Sashidhar Jagdishan? HDFC CEO And MD Facing Financial Fraud Allegations
An FIR has been filed against HDFC Bank's Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sashidhar Jagdishan over his alleged involvement in a series of financial frauds. The Lilavati Hospital has called for punitive action against the HDFC boss, who allegedly accepted money from the father of a trust member, with the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical (LKKM) Trust producing handwritten diary entries as evidence. The Trust has alleged that one of its former members paid Mr Jagdishan Rs 2.05 crore with the intent of harassing the father of a current Trust member. The Trust said its actions were based on a May 30 order from the Mumbai Magistrate Court, which directed the Bandra police to file an FIR against Mr Jagdishan and seven others. HDFC Bank has come out in support of its top executive, claiming that the allegations levelled were "baseless and malicious". The bank added that one of the Trust's trustees, Prashant Mehta, along with his family members, owe significant sums to the bank, which remain unpaid. "The Bank has obtained comprehensive legal advice and representation in this regard and it is committed to pursuing legal remedies and options to defend its MD & CEO's reputation. The Bank takes immense pride in the integrity and leadership of its MD & CEO," the bank stated. Who is Sashidhar Jagdishan? Mr Jagdishan took charge as the HDFC Bank CEO and MD in 2020, succeeding the bank's longest-serving CEO, Aditya Puri. He holds an undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Mumbai and a master's in economics of money, banking and finance from the University of Sheffield. He is also a Chartered Accountant, having earned his stripes from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Mr Jagdishan has been part of the private bank's setup since 1996, having joined the company as a manager in the finance division. He went on to become the finance head in 1999 and was subsequently promoted as the chief financial officer in 2008. He was named as the "strategic change agent" of the bank in 2019, a year before his eventual coronation as the top boss of the company. In 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved his re-appointment for three years, extending his stay at the bank till October 26, 2026.
