Turkey rallies for 2-1 win in friendly against US, which loses 3rd straight under Pochettino
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Turkey took advantage of a sloppy defense to beat the United States 2-1 in a rainy friendly on Saturday, dealing the Americans their third straight loss as Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in a 2-minute, 20-second span midway through the first half. Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds in for the U.S., which was missing many regulars as coach Mauricio Pochettino revamped his roster following a dismal performance at the CONCACAF Nations League final four in March. With a year to go before co-hosting the World Cup, the U.S. plays Switzerland on Tuesday at Nashville, Tennessee, in another friendly, then opens the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15. The Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination last year's Copa America led the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year. Pochettino changed eight starters from the Nations League loss to Canada in March, keeping only left back Max Arfsten, winger Diego Luna and forward Patrick Agyemang. Defender Alex Freeman, a 20-year-old son of former NFL All-Pro receiver Antonio Freeman, started in his U.S. debut. Matt Freese, a starter at Major League Soccer's New York City, made his debut in goal. Matt Turner, the usual starter since 2022, didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1. McGlynn scored when he ran onto a pass from Malik Tilman, took several touches, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area inside the far post for his second goal in five international appearances. It was the earliest U.S. goal since Shaq Moore scored 20 seconds in against Canada during the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Turkey tied it in the 24th minute when Freese tapped the ball to Johnny Cardoso, whose pass ricocheted off a leg and past Freese for Güler's fifth international goal. Then in the 27th, Miles Robinson tried to clear Oğuz Aydın's shot and the ball went to Aktürkoğlu, who one-timed a bouncing shot past Freese for his 12th international goal and sixth in eight games. Turkey goalkeeper Berke Özer also made his international debut. Preparing for the start of its World Cup qualifying campaign in September, Turkey has six wins, one loss and one draw in its last eight games. ___ AP soccer:

Springer hits go-ahead homer in Blue Jays' 5-4 win over Twins
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — George Springer hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Saturday. Springer went deep against Twins reliever Griffin Jax (1-4), who allowed a leadoff double to Addison Barger one at-bat earlier. Springer's 10th homer of the season made it 4-3 just as a light rain started falling at Target Field. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. tacked on an insurance run with a two-out RBI single in the ninth off Twins closer Jhoan Durán. Chad Green (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win. Jeff Hoffman allowed a solo homer in the ninth to Kody Clemens but still earned his 15th save. Minnesota took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on a solo home run by Matt Wallner. The Twins DH went deep to right against Toronto starter Kevin Gausman, his second homer in the past three days. Gausman didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning. The Twins' first hit by Ryan Jeffers sparked a two-run inning that tied the game. Twins starter Chris Paddack allowed runs in each of the first two innings but settled down after that. Paddack faced the minimum in the third and fifth innings. Minnesota had the bases loaded in the seventh but came up empty as Carlos Correa flew out to end the threat. Key moment Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Barger's leadoff double helped set the tone in the eighth. He found plenty of space in left field to easily put the tying run in scoring position against Jax. Key stat With a no-decision in Saturday's game, Gausman has just one win in 14 career starts against the Twins. He has a career 6.44 ERA versus Minnesota. Up next Toronto RHP Bowden Francis (2-7, 5.84 ERA) takes the mound for Sunday's series finale, looking for his first win since April 18. The Twins will counter with RHP Joe Ryan (6-2, 2.91), who has won four of his last five starts.

Guardians ace Shane Bieber stays optimistic despite facing setback in rehab
CLEVELAND (AP) — Shane Bieber promised himself after undergoing Tommy John surgery last April that he would be honest about his rehabilitation process. Even though the Cleveland Guardians ace is going through his first setback, Bieber is trying to remain optimistic. Bieber is in the middle of a seven-day pause from throwing after experiencing soreness in his right elbow following his first rehab start on May 31 and a bullpen session on Tuesday. The right-hander was scheduled to make his second rehab start with Double-A Akron on Friday before being shut down. 'My mind went back to a very close buddy of mine said a few weeks or a few months back when I was starting bullpens. He was like, 'Just don't freak out. If you get a setback, everybody gets at least one,'' Bieber said before Saturday's game against the Houston Astros. 'I was hoping to be that anomaly, but at the same time, maybe it's just part of the process and I'm trying to listen to my elbow and my body and do what's best for myself and the team in the long term.' Bieber will be checked again the middle of next week before the team's medical staff and specialist Dr. Keith Meister decide the next steps. Bieber threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on May 31, which was his 30th birthday. The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner faced nine batters, allowed one hit and struck out five while throwing 42 pitches. 'I'm a little frustrated with the timing of it as I get out here to Cleveland and join the team, but unfortunately, these rehab processes aren't exactly linear,' Bieber said. 'I've had a fantastic progression up to this point. A small hiccup, but hopefully we'll just keep it at just that.' Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Bieber — who agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall with a $16 million player option for 2026 — appeared to be on pace to return to the Guardians' rotation in late June, but that could be delayed until after the All-Star break. Cleveland (33-29) went into Saturday 7 1/2 games behind Detroit in the AL Central, and a half-game out of a wild-card spot. Guardians starters have the sixth-highest ERA in the American League (4.11). ___ AP baseball:
