Jailed for two decades: How Larrisa Vern stole R2. 8 million from Delmas Primary School
Former Delmas Primary School financial officer, Larrisa Vern, has been sentenced to 25 years behind bars after she was convicted on charges of fraud and money laundering.

The Delmas Regional Court has sentenced 52-year-old former Delmas Primary School financial officer, Larrisa Vern, to 20 years behind bars after she was convicted on charges of fraud and money laundering.
'This came after the Hawks Secunda-based serious commercial crime investigation (unit), priority crime specialised investigation (unit), Hawks asset forfeiture investigation (unit), and National Prosecuting Authority proved criminal activities against Vern,' said Mpumalanga spokesperson for the Hawks, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi.
Vern was appointed to her position at the school in December 2021 and assumed her duties in January 2022.
'In less than two years, her criminal activities were exposed after a whistleblower notified the authorities regarding two bonus payments made by her to her bank account,' said Nkosi.

The team of investigators managed to secure a warrant of arrest on 6 February 2024. Vern was arrested three days later, on 9 February 2024.
'Investigation continued, and more dirty linen was uncovered as it was established that Vern caused an actual loss of R2,792,912 to the school,' said Nkosi.
Vern paid money to four different bank accounts using different references before transferring the money to her main account.
In court, the state successfully proved 94 counts of fraud and 555 counts of money laundering.
Vern pleaded guilty on all charges before the Delmas Regional Court on 21 May 2025.
'Vern was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for fraud, of which five years is suspended for five years on the condition that she is not involved in fraudulent activities during the time of suspension. She was further sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for money laundering,' said Nkosi.
The court ruled that both sentences will run concurrently.
Vern is expected back in court on 5 June 2025 to allow the Asset Forfeiture Unit to present its case.
Meanwhile, provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Gerber has commended the team of investigators and the prosecution team for the 'excellent manner in which they dealt with the case'.
'The next step is to seize the proceeds she accumulated through her criminal activities. Gone are the days that you can benefit from your criminal deeds,' said Gerber.
In 2023, a Limpopo woman was arrested by the Hawks on allegations of stealing R1.5 million from her employer, the Thabazimbi Christian School.
At the time, provincial spokesperson of the Hawks in Limpopo, Lieutenant-Colonel Matimba Maluleke said Pretorius was arrested by the Limpopo Hawks serious commercial crime investigation unit for allegedly embezzling R1.5 million from the Thabazimbi Christian School.

We always said those who stole from VBS must be punished and languish in jail,' Ramokgopa said, adding that the Finance Department and the Reserve Bank should assist the suffering community to revive their only hope, VBS. Suspected cop killer arrested in Bushbuckridge
A suspect linked to the murder of Constable Khulani Chabangu on May 30 has been arrested. The 25-year-old suspect was caught while loitering in the streets of Mkhuhlu in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, yesterday at around 16:30. Mpumalanga News reports that a team of investigators comprising the Hawks, National Crime Intelligence and the Calcutta Police Task Team effected the arrest. 'The suspect was found in possession of two cellphones. It is believed that one of the phones was stolen during the robbery and murder of the policeman,' says Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Magonseni Nkosi. Further police investigations led the team to the house of a person of interest linked to the suspect. 'Upon seeing the police, the suspect fled into the residential area, managing to evade arrest,' says Nkosi. 'A search of the house was conducted during which a handgun with the serial numbers filed off and four live ammunition rounds were seized,' he adds. Chabangu (29), who was attached to Volksrust SAPS, was gunned down during a business robbery at a barbershop in Lillydale Trust under the Bushbuckridge municipality. The robbers entered the premises and demanded valuables from the victims, including cellphones and cash. They allegedly assaulted the victims and stripped the policeman of his clothes before taking his vehicle keys. As they left the barbershop, Chabangu pursued the robbers. They shot him in the upper body, killing him instantly. The Mpumalanga head of the Hawks, Major General Nico Gerber, vowed that the police would not rest until all involved in the killing of the officer were behind bars. 'We strongly believe that justice will be served for the family, community and the SAPS,' says Gerber. Chabangu's funeral takes place today in Bushbuckridge. More than 53 people have been charged for theft, corruption, fraud, money laundering, contraventions of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, and racketeering for stealing and looting more than R2 billion of VBS Mutual Bank money since 2018. Ramokgopa was speaking during a well-attended memorial service of the late ANC veteran, Reverend Dr Tshenuwani Simon Farisani, at the George Phagadi Town Hall in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, this week. Farisani passed away on Thursday, 29 May 2025, and his funeral will be held at the University of Venda Stadium, outside Thohoyandou, on Saturday. The former prominent Lutheran Church Bishop and known political struggle hero was honoured for his resilience in the fight for freedom and equality against the apartheid regime. Speaking to the mourners at the service, Ramokgopa said Farisani had fought for VBS victims. 'Government, under the tutelage of President Cyril Ramaphosa, has been on the side of the victims. We always said those who stole from VBS must be punished and languish in jail. 'The Reserve Bank and the Department of Finance, under the tutelage of Minister Enoch Godongwana, must assist the grieving communities to rebuild the collapsed VBS Mutual Bank,' she said. 'We have many times successfully rebuilt our country, including the health system in Gauteng during the predicaments of Life Esidimeni. We have also successfully rebuilt the Limpopo provincial government after it collapsed through fraudulent activities after some in the era of mismanaged government funds. 'There is nothing that can stand in our way to rebuild the VBS Mutual Bank and begin on a clean sheet,' she said to thunderous applause. 'When I came here, I drove a sizeable number of potholes, and the feeling was unbearable. I therefore implore you, Honourable Premier Ramathuba and your mayors, to fix all your roads and patch potholes so that investors can invest in your municipalities. 'Through this, we can win the fight against the triple challenges of inequality, unemployment and poverty,' she said. Veteran journalist Mathatha Tsedu was invited to the stage to give testimony on the life well spent by Farisani and how his political acumen bolstered his journalism prowess. However, Tsedu used the platform to voice criticism of the irregularities surrounding the ANC Vhembe regional elective conference in May. 'This is the ANC of Farisani. He would be disappointed by how you skipped vital items in the programme, only to jump into nominations and elections of the top five officials. 'How do you jump the secretariat report and other vital items on the programme as if the main objective of the conference was to elect leaders,' he asked. The conference saw Tshitereke Matibe living up to his name — 'Tshitereke,' a Venda name meaning 'protest' — as he staged a bold demonstration at the venue, ultimately securing a fourth term. Tsedu's criticism was challenged by an ANC regional executive committee (REC) member. 'Tsedu does not understand the politics of the ANC. This is not journalism, he must just leave politics to politicians, and journalism to the newsroom. You can just read from his address that he is far from within,' said the senior member, speaking to The Citizen on condition of anonymity. The leader, who asked for his name to be withheld for fear of reprisal, said that despite the woo-ha, Matibe won the conference hands down.
