Cops charged with kidnapping Chinese national out on bail
Two Gauteng police officers accused of unlawfully detaining and extorting a foreign national have been granted R1 000 bail each.
Constable Gift Mncedi Nteso, 33, and reservist Constable Seipati Mofokeng, 39, appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Friday following their arrest on Tuesday.
They allegedly detained a Chinese national at the Sharpeville police station and demanded R3 000 ransom from family members in order to secure the victim's release.
They each face charges of kidnapping, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
Hawks investigates tip-off
According to the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS), a senior police official informed the Vaal Rand-based Serious Corruption Investigation unit of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) of the arrest.
'An investigation was immediately launched and verbal 252A authorisation (entrapment) was secured from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions in Pretoria to monitor the transaction,' JCPS said in a statement.

Before Nteso and Mofokeng could collect the full amount, the Hawks were informed that a R1 000 payment had been made and the victim had been released.
They allegedly released the Chinese national without filing any formal record of arrest at the police station.
Police officers arrested at police station
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela said the investigating team went to the Sharpeville police station to execute the arrest.
'The two suspects were arrested after failing to provide satisfactory reasons as to why the Chinese national was arrested and released with no record,' Mavimbela said.
Nteso and Mofokeng are expected to appear in court again on 1 September.

Image: Supplied A lawyer and an auditor were among motorists arrested for excessive speeding this weekend along the N2 near Park Rynie, as part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport's ongoing "Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa" road safety campaign. MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, commended the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team stationed at Park Rynie for their vigilance and commitment to curbing road carnage. 'We wish to pause and commend the RTI team from Park Rynie working along the N2 for their vigilance and dedication towards ensuring road safety this weekend,' said Duma. Among those arrested was a lawyer who was allegedly clocked at 222km/h in a blue Mercedes-Benz while travelling from Umtata, nearly double the legal limit in a 120km/h zone. He initially failed to stop when instructed, prompting officers to give chase before apprehending him. The man was taken to Scottburgh Police Station and released on R3,000 bail. Also arrested was an auditor from Reservoir Hills, who was caught driving at 177km/h in a Hyundai. He was also taken to Scottburgh Police Station and granted R1,500 bail. Here's how many foreign nationals have been trying to cross into SA illegally
The Border Management Authority said illegal border crossing were mainly attempted by Zimbabweans, Mozambicans and Basotho. The Border Management Authority (BMA) are relentlessly blocking any illegal attempts to enter into South Africa. As well as those trying to cross into the country without authorisation, the BMA also confiscated large volumes of counterfeit goods and stolen property. BMA commissioner Michael Masiapato elaborated on the extent of the authority's work during a performance briefing on Sunday. Almost 10 000 denied entry The stats revealed by the commissioner were for the first quarter of the financial year and featured data collected from all international ports of entry. Masiapato said that the BMA had recorded 9 954 attempted illegal border crossings between April and June Broken into categories, 5 826 were undocumented, 2 127 were inadmissible and 2 001 were classified as undesirables. Travellers can be declared inadmissible for a variety of reasons, and this decision is generally made following an interview by a immigration officer. 'The majority of those intercepted and deported individuals were Basotho, Zimbabweans and Mozambicans,' said Masiapato. Masiapato stated that since July 2022, border officials had prevented roughly 496 600 people from attempting to enter the country illegally. Smuggled vehicle attempts Other BMA successes during the quarter included the interception of 15 high-powered vehicles and the recovery of 349 vehicles that suspects were attempting to smuggle out of the country. Counterfeit clothing and footwear valued at roughly R1 million had been confiscated, as well as 14 passports containing fraudulent immigration stamps. R446,000 cash and Toyota Fortuner forfeited as driver fails to explain money's origins
Jonisayi Maromo | Published 5 hours ago The High Court in Limpopo has granted a forfeiture order for a cash amount of R446,000 and a Toyota Fortuner sport utility vehicle, which were seized by police. The Hawks' asset forfeiture investigation unit and the National Prosecuting Authority's asset forfeiture unit (AFU) worked tirelessly to ensure the forfeiture of the money and the vehicle. 'This emanates from the arrest conducted by members of the South African Police Service attached to Musina in 2024. On 4 July 2024, police conducted a stop and search operation along the N1 road in Musina,' said Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks in Limpopo. During the operation, the police officers stopped the Toyota Fortuner which was driven by a foreign national. 'During a search, police found a plastic bag that contained South African bank notes underneath blankets inside the boot. Police interviewed the driver, and he failed to give a clear explanation for carrying the large amount of money inside the vehicle,' said Mmuroa. The driver was immediately arrested and the money was seized. The Hawks' asset forfeiture investigation unit was consulted for asset investigation. 'After completion of the investigations, the Hawks referred the matter to the National Prosecuting Authority's asset forfeiture unit for further handling. Following court processes, the High Court in Limpopo granted a preservation order for the Toyota Fortuner and the money in February, before the forfeiture order was granted last week. 'The cash was deposited into the criminal asset recovery account on 29 July. The forfeited Toyota Fortuner is about to be sold on auction,' said Mmuroa. Earlier this year, IOL reported that a 49-year-old man was arrested on charges of money laundering after being found in possession of about R1.2 million in cash. At the time, provincial police spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, said the arrested man had allegedly tried to bribe police officers after the money was found. 'This achievement is the result of the dedication by members deployed for Operation Vala Umgodi, and the man was nabbed on 16 March 2025 at Tonga near Komatipoort,' said Ndubane. She said police officers received a tip-off about a man who was allegedly in possession of an unlicenced firearm. 'They then responded swiftly and followed the information, and upon arrival at Tonga View, they found the owner of the house and conducted a search and it was during that time when they discovered the large sum of money hidden under the bed as well as inside the wardrobe,' said Ndubane. 'The astute members continued searching in other rooms where they further found a bag full of money. It was during the process when the man tried his luck to bribe the police officials with R50,000, but his attempts failed dismally.' Ndubane said the money amounted to R1.2 million in banknotes and coins, while there was also Mozambican currency.
