Indian Express3 days ago

THE MAHARASHTRA Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Thursday arrested a 27-year-old engineer from Thane for allegedly passing on sensitive documents related to the Indian Naval dockyard to a Pakistan Intelligence Operative (PIO) through social media.
An official said it was a case of honeytrap where the accused, identified as Ravi Verma who was working with a private defence technology company, was contacted by a woman on social media, who eventually lured him into handing over sensitive documents of the naval dockyard that he had access to.
An official said based on their investigation, Verma, who was working for the Navi Mumbai-based defence company, was contacted by a PIO on Facebook through a woman's profile. The woman spoke to him via social media and later exchanged phone numbers. The accused then passed on some documents that he had access to the PIO through Whatsapp.
'From Mid November 2024 to March 2025, the accused sent various documents of restricted areas in the Indian Navy dockyard that he had access to through the company where he was working,' the official added.
'The Thane ATS had him on their radar for some time and eventually we called him for questioning earlier this week. Based on his interrogation and technical proofs we got from his mobile phone, he was placed under arrest,' the official added
The accused was produced before a court and sent to police custody till June 2. Police are on the lookout for two others who have been named as accused in the matter.

Beware! Citizen traffic vigilantes on prowl, help cops issue 30k challans in five months

1 2 Hyderabad: Breaking traffic rules? Beware. Your fellow city residents are watching you. In the last five months alone, traffic cops across the three commissionerates have issued 30,000 challans based on complaints raised by vigilant residents and collected fines of Rs 1 crore. These 'tip-offs' were posted on the traffic police's social media platforms – X, WhatsApp and Facebook. The commonly reported offences: riding without helmet, jumping signals and wrong parking. There are also cases of triple riding, wrong-side driving, cellphone driving and rash driving. Each of these were accompanied by photos and videos. Some of the complaints brought to the notice of police by residents in the last 48 hours include blocking free left at Tarnaka X roads by a govt vehicle, triple riding without a helmet at Tank Bund, rude behaviour by a driver when questioned about driving on the wrong direction in Trimulgherry, and driving without a helmet while using a cellphone in Miyapur "We have a dedicated team at the commissioner's office that monitors grievances received through social media channels and alerts officials on the ground. Recently, we have noticed a surge in these complaints – especially regarding wrong parking in residential areas," said a traffic cop. Records confirm this spike in citizen complaints. In 2024, traffic police from the three commissionerates issued 50,000 challans (of the total 15 lakh), following public complaints. Cyberabad commissionerate limits alone contributed 44,000 challans. This helped cops raise around Rs 1.5 crore in penalties. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo In 2025, traffic police have already collected close to 70% of that in less than six months. The total challans issued so far this year is around 20 lakh. "Enforcement of traffic management faces limitations as the focus remains on maintaining traffic flow. That makes it challenging to monitor every violation, despite the CCTV coverage. Therefore, citizens' assistance is valuable in penalising offenders," said Rahul Hegde BK, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Hyderabad commissionerate. He added: "In the last 17 months, we have raised Rs 36 lakh with their help. Upon receiving complaints, our team verifies authenticity by contacting complainants and reviewing nearby CCTV footage before generating the challan."

"We don't feed 'biryani'...": Chhattisgarh Dy CM Vijay Sharma after NIA searches at 15 locations in Pakistan-linked espionage case

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], June 1 (ANI): A day after National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted a massive search operation at 15 locations in eight states across the country in a Pakistan-linked espionage case, Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma highlighted BJP government's 'zero tolerance policy' over national security and said 'we don't feed 'biryani' to these people' 'The BJP government's work with zero tolerance when it comes to issues related to national don't feed 'biryani' to these kinds of people in Bungalows in Delhi. Their place is fixed in jail...,' Sharma told reporters. Searches were conducted at the premises of suspects linked with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) in the states of Delhi, Maharashtra (Mumbai), Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam and West Bengal. NIA teams have seized several electronic gadgets and sensitive financial documents, along with other incriminating materials, during the searches. These are being extensively examined for clues to the espionage racket being run by Pakistan-based operatives as part of an anti-India terror conspiracy. As per NIA investigations, the suspects targeted in the searches had connections with Pakistani operatives, and acted as financial conduits for carrying out espionage activities in India. NIA had registered the case on May 20 following the arrest of an accused person who had been sharing sensitive information with PIOs since 2023 and had received funds through various conduits in India in lieu of leaking classified information related to national security. The anti-terror agency is continuing with its investigation in the case, registered under sections 61(2), 147, 148 of BNS 2023, sections 3 & 5 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and section 18 of UA(P) Act 1967. 3 Nigerian men get five years in jail for online fraud with Hardoi teacher

Lucknow: Chief judicial magistrate Richa Verma on Saturday sentenced three members of a Nigerian cyber fraud gang to five years of imprisonment each for defrauding a woman assistant teacher of over Rs 6.3 lakh through an online scam. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 75,000 on each convict, with an additional 15 days' jail time in case of non-payment. According to prosecution officer Anil Kumar, the case was filed by Ruchi Singh, a resident of Aashanagar locality and a teacher in the basic education department. On May 30, 2020, she lodged an FIR stating that she received a message on May 12, 2020, from an international number claiming to be from London (UK). The sender introduced himself as "Deepak Lee" and also provided an email ID. Shortly after, the accused called her and claimed to find her contact through a matrimonial site. They began conversing over WhatsApp, and he informed her that he sent a parcel. A link and tracking number were provided, which initially showed the parcel at a UK airport and later in Delhi. It was claimed that the parcel was held due to customs fees. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Ponte Serrada (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo A woman later called Singh, impersonating a customs officer, and tricked her into transferring Rs 6,31,548 to various bank accounts under the pretence of customs clearance charges. When the parcel never arrived, Singh filed a complaint at Kotwali police station on the directions of the SP. During the investigation, three Nigerian nationals — Nelson Chigaogejimu from Anambra, Francis Emeka, and Udala Chukwudi Patrick Jr. — were identified as the culprits. Police filed a chargesheet against them under sections related to cheating, forgery, the Information Technology Act, and the Foreigners Act, 1960. The trio were arrested from Delhi on Oct 17, 2020 and have been in jail since, said Hardoi superintendent of police Neeraj Jadaun. The court found all three guilty of preparing forged documents and using them to deceive the victim under the guise of international parcel delivery.
