Kota Kinabalu: The launch of the Madani Workers' Card (Kad Pekerja Madani) is a progressive move that reflects the Government's recognition of trade unions in shaping the national labour landscape, said State Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe. He said the card provides formal recognition and access to a range of digital benefits aimed at improving union members' welfare under the Department of Trade Union Affairs (JHEKS). 'This strategic initiative enables membership verification, better data collection, social protection networks and access to rewards via strategic partners,' he said. His speech was delivered by his political secretary Desmond Chan Loong Wei during the State-level briefing held at the National Department for Culture and Arts Auditorium. Phoong said the initiative aligns with International Labour Organisation (ILO) guidelines and mirrors best practices in developed countries where unions serve as key platforms to voice workers' issues constructively. He emphasised that the card marks a key step towards ensuring workers' voices are acknowledged in an organised manner, essential for industrial harmony. 'With Sabah's diverse industries forming the backbone of its economy, workers are the driving force. 'Union membership not only empowers workers with legitimate bargaining power, but also supports a more organised, competitive and inclusive employment ecosystem,' he said. Phoong also highlighted the card's role in supporting Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He said employers also play a key role in supporting the card's rollout by offering discounts and incentives to cardholders and recognising unions as part of good corporate governance and harmonious industrial relations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? One project worth RM12.6 million is in the design stage and another worth RM54 million is at the procurement stage, bringing the total to nearly RM1 billion. During a visit to SMK Pinggan-Pinggan in Pitas, Ahmad said all works are via open tender to ensure timely or early completion. The RM27 million SMK Pinggan-Pinggan project, 78pc complete, includes two hostel blocks, warden houses, a dining hall for 400 students, and support facilities. The new hostel, to be completed in December 2025, will replace one located 1.3km away, which forces students to walk along busy roads without pedestrian paths. He added that these projects reflect the Madani government's commitment to improving rural education infrastructure and narrowing the urban-rural education gap. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Govt to restore 'pondok' institutions with new technology, AI, says Anwar
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim attending the opening of the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorization (MTHQA) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. – BernamaPic KUALA LUMPUR: The government will restore and elevate the nation's "pondok" institutions in line with modern demands, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stated that this initiative involves cooperation between the Finance Ministry and the Islamic Development Malaysia Department. "We want to add new technology, including information technology, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, so that this bulwark remains the strongest one to defend the faith, morals, and character of the Ummah," he said at the opening ceremony of the 65th International Al-Quran Recital and Memorisation Competition (MTHQA) at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) on Saturday (Aug 2). Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Anwar said history proves that while the country's political, economic, and educational systems bowed to the colonisers, the pondok institutions remained the last bastion defending the identity of the Muslim community. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister also announced that he would launch the Mushaf Ummah Programme, an effort to distribute copies of the Quran, which has been officially translated into 30 world languages, globally on Aug 8. "In all my travels around the world - to Peru, Brazil, France, Cambodia, and dozens of other countries in recent years - every time I visit, I bring the Quran along with a translation in that country's language, and we distribute it officially. This, I believe, is a good approach," he said. This year's 65th MTHQA, running from Aug 2 to 9, 2025, features the theme 'Developing a MADANI Ummah' and brings together 71 participants from 49 countries. Malaysia is represented by four participants: Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan from Perak and Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi from Terengganu for the Recital category, while Muhammad Adib Ahmad Rozaini from Perak and Putri Auni Khadijah Mohd Hanif from Kelantan are in the Memorisation category. The winners of the two categories would receive RM40,000 in cash, the runners-up would get RM30,000, and third place would receive RM20,000, along with jewellery sponsored by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM). – Bernama

Fire near Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant contained: Russia
A fire that broke out near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant after Ukrainian shelling has been brought under control, the Russian-installed administration of the Russia-held plant in Ukraine said on Saturday. Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia plant in the first weeks of Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Both sides have accused each other of firing or taking other actions that could trigger a nuclear accident. The plant's administration said on Telegram that a civilian had been killed in the shelling, but that no plant employees or members of the emergency services had been injured. Reuters could not independently verify the Russian report. The station, Europe's biggest nuclear power plant, is not operating but still requires power to keep its nuclear fuel cool. The plant's Russia-installed management said radiation levels remained within normal levels and the situation was under control. - Reuters
