Students rally against NSFAS funding delays, highlighting financial hardships

A group of students from universities and TVET colleges took to the streets on Wednesday to express their frustrations over delayed funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), despite previous promises from the Department of Higher Education and Training and NSFAS to address the issues.
Accompanied by activists and concerned citizens, students marched to the department's offices in Pretoria, expressing ongoing frustration over delayed funding.
The march follows a similar protest last month by students at Tshwane University of Technology, who demanded that the department and NSFAS take immediate action to address delayed funding.
Kemogelo Masike, national president of the South African Students Federation, said students staged the march due to their anger and frustration with the NSFAS and the department.

He said students at universities and TVET colleges across the country are currently writing exams without receiving financial support from the government through NSFAS.
'We have written countless emails, memorandums of concerns to the Department of Higher Education and Training. We have also met personally with the executives at NSFAS. We have relayed our concerns but till today those issues are not resolved. Burning concerns pertain to defunding our students. Our students are defunded and many have been wrongfully discharged of their allowances. Many are evicted from their residences,' he said.
He added that students are particularly infuriated by the prospect of incurring historic debt starting from the 2026 academic year.
'We propose that the Minister (Dr Nobuhle Nkabane) must at least allocate 50% of her budget to the tuition funds of these students so that, come the 2026 academic year, they are not affected,' he said.
Vincent Makamu, former SRC president of the University of Limpopo, questioned the NSFAS's decision not to pay service providers, saying that the entity itself introduced the system.
He emphasised that universities have been around for a long time, implying that this issue should have been resolved earlier.
'We have been demonstrating about these things for years now and they are just not ready to go and deliver what they want to deliver. Or maybe they are just not willing to deliver. We can't come today and do the fight that we did three years back. It means they are not competent themselves,' he said.
Thivhudziwi Vele, chief director for programmes and qualifications for TVET, received the memorandum of demands and promised to respond, stating that a public acknowledgement would be issued confirming receipt of the document.

The pilot was participating in an airshow linked to the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Global Summit 2025, an annual global meeting organised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). The summit was hosted at both the Durban International Convention Centre and Virginia Airport. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene after people reported seeing the plane crash into the ocean. Parts of the aircraft wreckage have since been recovered. Authorities are appealing to the public and the maritime community to report any findings of debris that may be related to the light aircraft accident along the Durban shoreline or at sea. Findings can be reported to the Police at 10111, to the NSRI EOC at 0870949774, or on marine VHF radio to Durban Radio (Telkom Maritime Radio Services) or Durban Port Control, to support the AIID and Police investigation.

Significant strides in school sanitation: 97% of schools now equipped
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says the R5.5 billion spent in School Infrastructure Backlogs Grant has been audited since the inception of the SAFE initiative. Image: Department of Basic Education South Africa / Facebook A total of 97% of schools identified in 2018 for the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) programme have been provided with safe and appropriate sanitation facilities as of July, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said. 'The Department of Basic Education has advised that, as of 1 July 2025, out of the total 3 372 schools identified for intervention through the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) Initiative, a total of 3,254 schools (97%) had been provided with safe and appropriate sanitation facilities,' Gwarube said. She was responding to IFP MP Siphosethu Ngcobo when he asked about the progress made in eradicating pit latrines at public schools in each province since the launch of the SAFE initiative in 2018. 'The balance of 45 remaining pit toilet projects, identified under the SAFE initiative, were initially delayed due to funding constraints from certain donor partners. They have since been reallocated to performing implementing agents and are earmarked for completion in the current financial year.' Gwarube also said the Department of Basic Education remained committed to ensuring that all pit latrines identified through the SAFE initiative were eradicated and replaced. 'Furthermore, the Department of Basic Education remains committed to ensuring that all pit latrines not identified under the SAFE initiative are identified and replaced by provincial Education Departments as soon as possible. 'Our goal is to provide safe, age-appropriate, and dignified sanitation facilities that create an enabling learning environment where every learner can focus on their education,' she said. Gwarube added that R5.5 billion spent in the School Infrastructure Backlogs Grant (SIBG) has been audited since the inception of the SAFE initiative. Her response showed that the Eastern Cape expenditure totalled R3.4 billion, KwaZulu-Natal R1.5 billion, and Limpopo R498 million. The Free State and Mpumalanga showed no expenditure on the SIGBG because they have been entirely funded by the Provincial Education Infrastructure Grant or funded through donor funding. Gwarube said the department remained resolute in its commitment to eliminating all unsafe sanitation infrastructure at public schools across the country.

Search for missing pilot to resume on Friday after aircraft crash off Durban beach

Image: DOCTOR NGCOBO / Independent Newspapers The search for a missing pilot will resume on Friday morning after a light aircraft crashed into the ocean near Battery Beach on Thursday afternoon. This is according to update provided by ALS Paramedics. The light aircraft had been participating in an airshow linked to the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Summit, which was being hosted at the Durban International Convention Centre this week. The summit is the third annual global meeting organised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). The Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) said the crash occurred near Suncoast Casino at approximately 13:45pm. 'The accident occurred at approximately 13:45 when the ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft that was performing its final display crashed into the sea,' the AIID said in a media statement. Pictures from the scene showed that wreckage from the plane had been recovered. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said he went to the crash scene immediately after receiving the report. 'I was received by the Director of SA Civil Aviation Authority, Ms Poppy Khoza and her team,' Duma said. 'Ms Khoza informed me that the authority's Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has taken over and will be conducting an extensive investigation to establish the causes of the accident. 'Critically, as the Department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal, our hearts are with the family of the pilot,' he said.
