John Terry hails ‘man dressed as a shoe' who overtook him then came back to help during London Marathon struggles

The Sun29-04-2025

JOHN TERRY has heaped praise on a London Marathon runner "dressed as a shoe" after they overtook him before returning to help him.
The former Chelsea captain was one of a number of ex footballers taking part in the run last Sunday, including ex-Blues stars Steve Sidwell and Jody Morris.

However, the 44-year-old was left in pain after blood was seen coming through his T-shirt after suffering from nipple chafing when he was picked up by TV cameras during the event.
But Terry 's afternoon took a strange turn when he was helped by a fellow runner... dressed as a shoe.
Taking to Instagram, Terry shared a picture of himself in his running gear alongside Morris and Sidwell and said the marathon was "the TOUGHEST thing" he had ever done "by far".
He captioned the post with his stunning shoe story, saying: "Legs are a little stiff and sore this morning, that is by far the TOUGHEST thing I have EVER done and this morning I have so much respect for everyone who run the marathon yesterday.
"Also a big shout out to the guy dressed as a shoe, who overtook me when I was struggling, yes dressed as a shoe and overtook me, slowed down and gave me some great words of encouragement and gave me some sweets and gels, he then carried on running, about two minutes later he come running back towards me with a bottle of coke.
"Thank you mate 👊🏻💙🏃🏻‍♂️SHHOOEEE…
"I see so many great things like this yesterday.
"Well Done everyone."
The runner in question turned out to be Karl Fitzpatrick.
According to the BBC, he was running to raise money for Jersey Hospice.

He has been supporting the hospice since 2022 and has raised nearly £22,000 in that time.
On running with Terry, Mr Fitzpatrick told the BBC: "I said to the fella 'only the greatest marathon runners wear these shoes,' joking as we both had them on.
"I then realised it was John Terry. I slowed down and try to give him the motivational bants and tried to reassure him that he was doing fine.
"So it might have looked strange, a shoe running the opposite way to everyone else and handing a full fat coke. I wished him the very best and told him 'be strong and the pain will go."
As well as his nipple injury, Terry was also forced to slow to a walk at one point due to cramp.
He eventually completed the course in just over five hours.
However, former manager Jose Mourinho issued a brutal reply to his marathon completion on Instagram.
He joked: "Sid I believe. You I have doubts you did it."
Sidwell himself replied to the post, saying: "Brilliant mate. Incredible effort."

We got away with it – Harry Kane admits England lacked quality in Andorra win

England were booed by many of the 6,950 travelling fans after a scoreless first half against Andorra, with further jeers greeting the final whistle after Tuchel's men failed to kick on from Kane's 50th-minute goal. The candid head coach felt the Euro 2024 runners-up 'played with fire' due to their lack of 'seriousness and urgency', with the skipper sharing similar sentiments. 'It wasn't our greatest performance,' Kane said. 'I don't think it's one many people are going to remember, that's for sure, but it's three points in the bag. 'But, yeah, for sure we know we can play better in all aspects, both with and without the ball. 'It's down to us now to go analyse it, look back and try and learn from it because condition-wise it's going to be very similar to next summer – dry pitch, warm weather, humid. 'We were just lacking quality, looked a bit fatigued both physically and mentally and, yeah, we got away with it because we're a good team and they had a couple of half-chances there where we didn't get punished. But ultimately, it wasn't good enough.' Harry Kane hailed Noni Madueke's 'individual quality' after the Chelsea winger set up his goal against Andorra (Bradley Collyer/PA) Kane has scored in all three matches under Tuchel, his former manager at Bayern Munich, with the latest effort extending England's all-time top scorer's record goal haul to 72. Noni Madueke capped a man-of-the-match display by providing the cross for the winner and the captain felt this kind of match cried out for the directness of a talent like the Chelsea winger. 'He was really good today,' Kane said as attention turns to Tuesday's friendly against Senegal. 'I think in these type of games, you need players like Noni who are good one-v-one to sometimes make a difference. 'It's a dry pitch, not easy to move the ball quickly, so sometimes you rely on individual quality and I thought he was probably our best outlet today. Harry Kane's goal was enough to seal a low-key win over Andorra (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'The goal itself was probably our best move of the game in terms of how we wanted to play, more in terms of Curt (Jones) getting on it and playing the forward pass to me, and then obviously the rebound and back across. 'It was probably our best move and we just didn't have enough of that, both with probably the runs and also the quality – a lot of balls kind of overhit, out of play, and it just kind of killed our momentum, especially there in the second half.'

New favourite installed for Cardiff City manager job following Aaron Ramsey bombshell Cardiff City have suffered two major setbacks in their search for Omer Riza's successor Aaron Ramsey is set to leave Cardiff City in a move to Mexico (Image: David Price/Arsenal FC via Getty Images ) Des Buckingham has been installed as the new favourite for the Cardiff City job. The Bluebirds have suffered two significant setbacks over the last three days in their quest to appoint a new manager; on Friday, Nathan Jones signed a new long-term deal with Championship side Charlton to put all speculation linking him with the position firmly to bed. ‌ And secondly on Sunday, it emerged Aaron Ramsey will not be taking the reins at his boyhood club but will instead up sticks and move to Mexico to join Guadalajara-based Pumas in order to prolong his playing career. ‌ Reports surfaced on the other side of the Atlantic on Saturday evening that Ramsey had entered into "advanced talks" with the Mexican side. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community TV reporter Andres Vaca told the Seleccione2 podcast: 'I don't know if they're selling me smoke, they just told me that Aaron Ramsey is going to join Pumas. 'They told me it's almost a confirmation.' Article continues below On Sunday morning, the Press Association reported the links in even stronger tones, saying the 34-year-old had agreed terms. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano followed this up with his own confirmation, adding: "Aaron Ramsey will sign in as new Pumas player in the next days, ready for new chapter in Mexico." Des Buckingham (Image: Getty Images ) It leaves Cardiff's hunt for a new boss in a sorry state; an announcement was due at the start of next week but whether that now happens remains to be seen. ‌ Former Oxford United boss Buckingham has always been in the mix and was involved in the interview process which concluded at the end of last month. A shortlist, using the help of an external agency, was then sent to Malaysia for Vincent Tan's final decision. Since then, events have gone awry to say the least. With Jones and Ramsey now off the table, contenders who were in the original running are now back on the agenda. Article continues below Bookmakers place 40-year-old Buckingham as favourite (1/1), ahead of Leicester City coach Brian Barry-Murphy (6/4) and ex-Bolton boss Ian Evatt (10/3). Around a month ago, Buckingham was riding high in the bookies' odds for the job. He was sacked by Oxford last December and has been out of work since. He led the U's to promotion out of League One last year. Buckingham is also said to be in the running for the vacant post at Plymouth Argyle.

More info Jamie Borthwick, known for his role as Jay Brown in EastEnders, has issued a sincere apology after he was caught using an offensive term against disabled people. The incident took place about six months ago during his time on Strictly Come Dancing and has led to speculation that the actor might have been suspended from the BBC soap. The Manchester Evening News reported that the soap star used the derogatory term in a video referring to the people of Blackpool, where the beloved Strictly episode is traditionally filmed at the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Disability charity Scope and a Blackpool councillor have expressed their disappointment over the matter. In a statement to The Sun on Sunday, Jamie expressed his regret: "I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. (Image: BBC/Jack Barnes) "I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. "Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong," reports the Express. (Image: ITV) He also made a point to offer a specific apology to the residents of Blackpool, emphasising his contrition for his comments. The Sun claims that the actor has been sidelined from EastEnders, resulting in the BBC issuing the following statement: "This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. We have robust processes in place for this." Jamie's Strictly appearance last year was marked by his partnership with Michelle Tsiakkas. The controversy allegedly began in November when the Strictly cast filmed at Blackpool Tower Ballroom. (Image: PA) Meanwhile, singer Wynne Evans, famous for Go Compare adverts and 53 years old, also faced criticism for stroking partner Katya Jones on live television, despite suggestions that it was meant as a joke. This is not the first time the popular show has been surrounded by controversy. In previous seasons, backstage tension led to the sudden exits of Amanda Abbington and Giovanni Pernice. Reach PLC has reached out to the BBC for comment. Strictly Come Dancing is expected to return to BBC One later this year, with past episodes available to stream via ITVX.
