What Thunder said about Nikola Topic and his torn ACL progress
Knocking down turnaround 3-pointers, excitement continues to build around Nikola Topic. While the Oklahoma City Thunder are a win away from a championship with a 3-2 2025 NBA Finals series lead over the Indiana Pacers, the 19-year-old has other events circled on his calendar.
Well over a year since he partially tore his ACL in May 2024, Topic could be on the verge of his NBA debut. He'll likely be back for the 2025 Summer League in July. That gives the Thunder at least one player to keep an eye on during the multi-week event.
Topic has rehabbed his torn ACL during the 2024-25 season. He served a redshirt season that helped the Thunder land him with the No. 12 pick of the 2024 NBA draft. Before that, the tall playmaker was talked about as a possible top-five pick.
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault discussed Topic's progress before they collected a 120-109 Game 5 win over the Pacers. He's had a chance to get a frontrow view of a title contender and how to carry himself around as an NBA player.
"It's hard to tell right now. We obviously saw him in the draft. He's exciting when you watch him on film. In terms of what he's doing right now, he's still X amount of time post-op. He's still return-to-performance. I don't think he's the player right now that he will be in training camp," Daigneault said. "The thing that's most impressive about him to see is he's incredibly young, he's stateside for the first time, in the NBA for the first time, coming off a long-term injury and he's been unbelievably consistent and mature and professional in his approach.
To tear your ACL a month before the draft could be catastrophic for most prospects. Especially somebody as young as Topic. It could cost you millions as you slide down teams' boards. But Daigneault has been impressed with his mental fortitude.
"When you watch somebody go through that, you can learn a lot about them. They are part of the team but they are disconnected in a lot of ways. He didn't travel on most of our trips, and he's an arm's length away a lot of the time. Yet he again approached that with great poise and professionalism," Daigneault said. "Inserted himself into the mix in a very appropriate way. The guys really respect the way that he approaches things. He's an old soul. He's way beyond his years and so that bodes really well for him, regardless where he starts as a player on the court. That stuff translates, and he's been very impressive with that."
Even though the Thunder had a historic 68-14 regular season and are on the doorstep of an NBA championship, Topic could help fix their backup ball-handler role. That's been a struggle OKC has overcome for most of the year but could be solved with Topic's talents.

3 NBA Free Agents Who Could Join The Lakers This Summer
3 NBA Free Agents Who Could Join The Lakers This Summer originally appeared on Fadeaway World. This NBA offseason is expected to be one of historic proportions, and the Los Angeles Lakers will be one of many teams making some moves to their roster. With LeBron James set to return, and Luka Doncic already preparing for his first full season in Los Angeles, the Lakers are feeling massive pressure to them a roster that can compete in the West. Advertisement Unfortunately for the Lake Show, options are somewhat limited given they have almost no financial flexibility this summer. They are currently on the books for over $192 million with negative cap space, but they do have some exceptions that will allow them to bring in a few key players. The non-taxpayer mid-level exception could allow the Lakers to sign a player to a contract worth roughly $14.1 million. The bi-annual exception is valued at $5.1 million to use for contracts up to two years. It's not much, but it might just be enough to make a difference, especially if the Lakers make moves on the trade market. While the premium targets remain priced out for the Lakers, there are at least three players whom they could sign that might find a consistent role in JJ Redick's rotation next season. Larry Nance Jr. Credit: Stephen Lew/USA Today Sports As a nine-year veteran and former Laker, Larry Nance Jr. is a great option for the Purple and Gold, and he's a realistic choice after making $11.2 million in the 2024-25 season. While undersized for his position, Nance Jr. uses his length, power, and athleticism to help his team, and his skills could prove especially useful next to Luka Doncic, who thrives next to athletic rim-runners. Advertisement In 24 games this season, he averaged 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game on 51.6% shooting for the Hawks. With an uncertain future ahead, Nance could be lured back to Los Angeles (where he spent his first two and a half seasons) for the chance to win a championship alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James. Chris Paul San Antonio Spurs guard Chris Paul (3) reacts against the Los Angeles Lakers in the first half at Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images As a 12x All-Star, 11x All-NBA player, and 9x All-Defensive star, 40-year-old Chris Paul has nothing left to prove in the NBA. After his latest stop in San Antonio, Paul was thought to be considering retirement, but now we know there's a good chance he'll return for his 21st season. While he may not be the point guard he once was, he'd be a solid choice to serve as Luka's backup off the bench. Advertisement Besides two decades of experience, Paul brings a special kind of ability to the Lakers. His skills as a floor general and playmaker would bring stability to the bench and bring out the most of the team's depth. Paul's relationship with LeBron James would ensure that the Lakers maintain a healthy and cooperative locker room with every player in sync and connected with the ultimate chemistry. Naz Reid Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid (11) looks down the court during a timeout against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the fourth quarter during game one of the Western Conference Finals for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Paycom Center. It's no secret that the Lakers need a big man this summer, and Naz Reid is everything they are hoping for. After a disappointing season, he may not return to the Timberwolves, and he may forgo a bigger payday for the opportunity to join a contending Lakers team. As a more traditional center, his arrival in free agency would give them the interior presence they need without gutting their team of assets. Advertisement With averages of 14.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game on 46.2% shooting this season, he was a core member of the Timberwolves, and his work ethic, determination, and fearless approach have made a strong impression over the past two years. His exact value is still somewhat of a mystery to NBA experts, but he won't come cheap with a $15 million player option for the 2025-26 season. It remains to be seen what happens in free agency this summer, but Rob Pelinka is unlikely to let it go by without making any moves. With a potential championship on the line, he knows the pressure is high to make improvements, but any wrong moves at this point could threaten to destabilize their entire situation. NBA Insider Lists Potential 'Under-The-Radar' Free Agents For The Lakers
NBA Insider Lists Potential 'Under-The-Radar' Free Agents For The Lakers originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Los Angeles Lakers have been linked with some big names this offseason, but they'll likely be making some smaller moves as well. Lakers insider Khobi Price shared some of the lower-tier players that the team could go after this summer. Advertisement "Under-the-radar potential free agent targets for the Lakers include Luke Kornet, Tre Jones, Dante Exum, Amir Coffey, and Larry Nance Jr." Let's take a look at these one by one. Luke Kornet was a solid backup center for the Boston Celtics this past season. Kornet averaged 6.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game for the Celtics in 2024-25. The 29-year-old can't be the starter for the Lakers, but would be a good rotational piece. Tre Jones started the campaign on the San Antonio Spurs but was then shipped to the Chicago Bulls as part of the De'Aaron Fox trade. Jones averaged 11.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game for the Bulls. Like Kornet, he would be a solid backup. Advertisement Dante Exum is next, and he averaged 8.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game for the Dallas Mavericks in 2024-25. Exum is a decent backup, but there are major injury concerns here, as he played just 20 games. The last time he played more than 50 games in a single campaign was back in 2016-17. The best ability is availability, so the Lakers should ideally steer clear. Amir Coffey, meanwhile, would be an intriguing option. Coffey averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2024-25. He started the season well, but then suffered a knee injury. When he did come back, there was no longer a spot available in the rotation. Coffey's two-way impact would make him a decent acquisition for the Lakers. Last but not least, we get to a former Laker in Larry Nance Jr. Nance, whom the Lakers selected with the 27th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, averaged 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game for the Atlanta Hawks in 2024-25. He can play as a small-ball center and has developed a three-point shot as well, which makes him a welcome addition. With the exception of Exum due to his injury, the rest would be decent rotation pieces for the Lakers. We also listed three free agents for the team to target, and Nance was one of them. It's unclear, though, if he is interested in a reunion. Advertisement Jovan Buha, another Lakers insider, also shared some updates regarding the team's activity this offseason. Buha expects the team to be aggressive to appease Luka Doncic, but a move for Walker Kessler is unlikely. Chris Paul and Lonzo Ball are two guards they are interested in, but there are injury concerns regarding the latter. Only time will tell who the Lakers end up with, but expect changes. There was a lot to like about their 2024-25 season, as they were the third seed in the Western Conference with a 50-32 record. The campaign ended on a sour note, though, as the Minnesota Timberwolves eliminated the Lakers in five games in the first round. It was clear moves had to be made if they were to become serious title contenders in 2025-26. NBA Insider Reveals Four Most Tradeable Lakers Players In This Offseason
NBA Insider Reveals Four Most Tradeable Lakers Players In This Offseason originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Los Angeles Lakers are set for a busy offseason, marked by numerous major moves to be made. In light of this, NBA insider Jovan Buha recently shared his list of the most realistic moves the team would make, highlighting the team's most tradeable assets in the process, during an episode of "Buha's Block". Advertisement While speaking about the realistic outcomes, Buha expressed how the team was likely to use their taxpayer MLE to sign a player. In addition to this, he said: "They [Lakers] trade at least three of Rui, Gabe, Dalton, and Maxi Kleber, and they're not sure about the inclusion of a first-round pick." "Those are their four primary tradeable player assets with expiring contracts, and Dalton's still on a rookie deal, so I think they trade at least three of those four players. Again, the first (pick) will come down to the opportunity cost that is out there and the types of guys they can get back." A number of the Lakers' needs and requirements were made known during the exit conference. The demand for a solid big man to fill out their frontcourt rotation emerged as the priority for the offseason. In doing so, the team has been in active pursuit of talented candidates, both via trade and in the free agency market. Advertisement While several targets have been identified, it has become quite clear that the team will need to part ways with some of their key rotational players to acquire a talented big, particularly in the case of Nic Claxton, Daniel Gafford, or even Mitchell Robinson. In this regard, the aforementioned players all bring something to the table. Rui Hachimura has been an extremely serviceable forward during his time in LA. He showcased incredible two-way ability, often drawing on tough defensive assignments while also developing into a reliable perimeter threat. Hachimura's averages of 13.0 points and 5.1 rebounds certainly leave more room for satisfaction. However, as an expiring contract, teams would see some value in picking him up now. Vincent and Kleber have also been serviceable. While there is little to say about Kleber, considering he missed most of the season with an injury, Vincent was an integral role player, averaging 6.3 points on 40.0% shooting from the field and 35.3% from beyond the arc. Advertisement Meanwhile, the Lakers' most valuable prospect in this list is their young guard Dalton Knecht. The 24-year-old showed a lot of potential in his rookie season, averaging 9.1 points and 2.8 rebounds while shooting 46.1% from the field and 37.6% from the three-point line. His perimeter shooting certainly presents a lot of scope for development in the future. But his overall offensive package, including his ability to finish at the rim, could be considered valuable to a team looking at young players. Additionally, the team still has some scope to include players such as Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton via sign-and-trade, along with their second-round picks. Of all the assets the Lakers have, their stock of expiring contracts is immensely valuable when considering trades. With almost $55 million in expiring contracts, the Purple and Gold are capable of facilitating some incredible trades to help structure their roster for the upcoming season. Advertisement Other than trades, the Purple and Gold would still need to clear up cap space to acquire some targets in the free agent market. While the likelihood of Clint Capela joining the team has gathered more traction in recent days, the team will also look at other options to improve their wing depth. Overall, much of Buha's predictions for the offseason are based on the notion of LeBron James opting into his contract or signing a new deal, and Luka Doncic signing a three-year deal with the Lakers. With much of the roster construction being dependent on these events, the Purple and Gold are unlikely to pull the trigger on any moves.
