3 NBA Free Agents Who Could Join The Lakers This Summer
3 NBA Free Agents Who Could Join The Lakers This Summer originally appeared on Fadeaway World.
This NBA offseason is expected to be one of historic proportions, and the Los Angeles Lakers will be one of many teams making some moves to their roster. With LeBron James set to return, and Luka Doncic already preparing for his first full season in Los Angeles, the Lakers are feeling massive pressure to them a roster that can compete in the West.

Unfortunately for the Lake Show, options are somewhat limited given they have almost no financial flexibility this summer. They are currently on the books for over $192 million with negative cap space, but they do have some exceptions that will allow them to bring in a few key players.
The non-taxpayer mid-level exception could allow the Lakers to sign a player to a contract worth roughly $14.1 million. The bi-annual exception is valued at $5.1 million to use for contracts up to two years. It's not much, but it might just be enough to make a difference, especially if the Lakers make moves on the trade market.
While the premium targets remain priced out for the Lakers, there are at least three players whom they could sign that might find a consistent role in JJ Redick's rotation next season.

As a nine-year veteran and former Laker, Larry Nance Jr. is a great option for the Purple and Gold, and he's a realistic choice after making $11.2 million in the 2024-25 season. While undersized for his position, Nance Jr. uses his length, power, and athleticism to help his team, and his skills could prove especially useful next to Luka Doncic, who thrives next to athletic rim-runners.

In 24 games this season, he averaged 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game on 51.6% shooting for the Hawks. With an uncertain future ahead, Nance could be lured back to Los Angeles (where he spent his first two and a half seasons) for the chance to win a championship alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
Chris Paul

As a 12x All-Star, 11x All-NBA player, and 9x All-Defensive star, 40-year-old Chris Paul has nothing left to prove in the NBA. After his latest stop in San Antonio, Paul was thought to be considering retirement, but now we know there's a good chance he'll return for his 21st season. While he may not be the point guard he once was, he'd be a solid choice to serve as Luka's backup off the bench.

Besides two decades of experience, Paul brings a special kind of ability to the Lakers. His skills as a floor general and playmaker would bring stability to the bench and bring out the most of the team's depth. Paul's relationship with LeBron James would ensure that the Lakers maintain a healthy and cooperative locker room with every player in sync and connected with the ultimate chemistry.
Naz Reid
Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid (11) looks down the court during a timeout against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the fourth quarter during game one of the Western Conference Finals for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Paycom Center.
It's no secret that the Lakers need a big man this summer, and Naz Reid is everything they are hoping for. After a disappointing season, he may not return to the Timberwolves, and he may forgo a bigger payday for the opportunity to join a contending Lakers team. As a more traditional center, his arrival in free agency would give them the interior presence they need without gutting their team of assets.

With averages of 14.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game on 46.2% shooting this season, he was a core member of the Timberwolves, and his work ethic, determination, and fearless approach have made a strong impression over the past two years. His exact value is still somewhat of a mystery to NBA experts, but he won't come cheap with a $15 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
It remains to be seen what happens in free agency this summer, but Rob Pelinka is unlikely to let it go by without making any moves. With a potential championship on the line, he knows the pressure is high to make improvements, but any wrong moves at this point could threaten to destabilize their entire situation.

Stephen A. Smith Accuses Major U.S. City Of Being Unsafe
Stephen A. Smith Accuses Major U.S. City Of Being Unsafe originally appeared on The Spun. For the third time in just the past week, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith has gone viral in the NBA community. Roughly a week ago, Smith made headlines for calling out Tyrese Haliburton. This came after the Indiana Pacers defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. By the time Game 4 came around, Smith received criticism for playing solitaire on his phone while at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Advertisement Fast forward to this Tuesday, and Smith is receiving pushback for suggesting an NBA city is unsafe for players. He made this comment during a "First Take" segment about Ja Morant's future with the Memphis Grizzlies. Smith claims NBA players have told him they don't feel safe in Memphis. "The people in Memphis, it's a great sports town, great fans, great people, but there's an element there where cats like Jimmy Butler and others don't feel like it's the safest environment," Smith said. "I'm talking to the local authorities in Memphis. You've got to clean some of that stuff up because it's dissuasive to NBA players. They have talked about it. I know, they've told me. That's all I'm saying." LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 08: Sports television personality Stephen A. (Photo by)It's certainly possible players shared that information with Smith, we know for sure that Morant isn't one of his sources. Advertisement Earlier this afternoon, Morant called out Smith for dissing Memphis on national television. "Talkin bout the grizz more than the finals wit these [cap emoji] ahh sources," Morant wrote on X. "Instead of focusing on the performances we seen from jdub/shai , tj/siakam, how this series is going. we say sumn negative about a city/team on a national level." Smith has not yet replied to Morant's comments. Perhaps he's saving his response for Wednesday's episode of "First Take." Related: Stephen A. Sports Fans 'Done' With ESPN's Stephen A. Smith
Sports Fans 'Done' With ESPN's Stephen A. Smith originally appeared on The Spun. ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith was once considered a fan favorite in the NBA world. However, fans have grown tired of his antics. Advertisement During the 2024-25 NBA season, Smith received plenty of backlash for his feud with LeBron James. It went from a one-time altercation to him taking shots about the four-time NBA champion's character. He even suggested that James missed the legendary Kobe Bryant's memorial service. Just a few days ago, Smith took aim at Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton. His comments were in response to Haliburton calling out media critics. "In case he was talking about me, my brother, I'm not going away," Smith said. "I'm gonna be here for a while. So next year, and the year after that… I'm going to be here, and players far more accomplished and far more superior have made their efforts trying to call me out. How has that worked out?" Apparently, Smith's latest rival is none other than Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant. Advertisement On Tuesday's episode of "First Take," Smith suggested that NBA players don't feel safe in Memphis. (Photo by)Morant wasted no time firing back at Smith. "Talkin bout the grizz more than the finals wit these [cap emoji] ahh sources," Morant wrote on X. "Instead of focusing on the performances we seen from jdub/shai , tj/siakam, how this series is going. we say sumn negative about a city/team on a national level." Advertisement Unsurprisingly, Smith clapped back at Morant on Tuesday night. "So this is what we're doing now @JaMorant? I recall talking about the Finals. But the @memgrizz made news because of Bane getting traded. AND, your possible extension coming up. Would you prefer I go into detail about WTH has been going on in Memphis? Why players have stated they're not interested in going? Or even MORE details? Or would you like me to leave well enough alone, and let the great peeps of Memphis address it on their own? Your call! I'm all ears," Smith replied. BROOKLYN, NY - JUNE 26: Steven A Smith looks on during the 2024 NBA Draft - Round One on June 26, 2024 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. (Photo by Kostas Lymperopoulos/NBAE via Getty Images)After reading that response, NBA fans came to the conclusion that Smith simply loves being at the center of drama. Advertisement "This man lives for any type of drama/beef that he can find," an NBA fan commented. "You are just out of pocket," a second fan said. "You're making it personal." "This dude thinks he's part of the mob or something," a social media user wrote. "Threatening people cause they say something about him. He's a loser and a failure of a man. No matter how much money you have made, you are a loser and a failure." "You're the worst bro and I used to love you so much you was my hero as a commentator but the way you attack young black players bothers me so much bro I wish you would stop," another fan tweeted. Advertisement "He didn't even say your name man lol," a fan asked. "What's goin on with you?" There's no chance Smith will be disciplined by ESPN for his social media posts. We're talking about a personality who recently signed a five-year, $100 million contract extension. If anything, Smith will feel empowered to keep butting heads with NBA players. Related: Stephen A. Pacers made surprising trade during the NBA Finals
It's not every day that you see a team in the middle of the NBA Finals making a trade. Really, the only other time I can remember it happening was a few years ago when the Denver Nuggets made one of the weirdest, most inconsequential deals for a 2024 first-round pick by trading a pick in 2029. Denver did that to add another cheap salary to its roster immediately. It also created a bit of space for the Nuggets to pay the players on its roster who were about to win a championship. Advertisement Here we are, a few years late,r and the Indiana Pacers are doing the same thing. Indiana agreed to trade the No. 23 overall pick in the draft and the rights to Mojave King to the Pelicans to reclaim the team's own 2026 first-round pick that had previously been traded away, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. While this trade might feel a bit insignificant in the moment, it does quite a bit of work for the Pacers' offseason moving forward. The Pacers save a bit of money by trading away their first-round pick for this season, which makes it easier for Indiana to sign Myles Turner while avoiding the luxury tax, NBA cap expert Yossi Gozlan says. It also gives Indiana a bit more firepower to potentially make a significant deal down the line. Indiana owns all of its draft picks through 2026 through 2032. If the Pacers see a player they desperately want, they can package those picks and potentially make a deal similar to what the Orlando Magic did with Desmond Bane. Advertisement MORE MAGIC: Who won the trade between the Magic and Grizzlies? This trade doesn't matter for the Pacers in this moment. It won't help them in the finals. But it does make the path forward for keeping this team together and potentially improving it a tiny bit easier. That matters a lot for a smaller market like the Pacers — especially now that this team is officially a title contender and maybe an NBA champion.
