KAWASAKI, Japan , Aug. 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba Digital Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysia's MyDIGITAL Corporation and the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) on exploring the use of Toshiba's advanced Weather Data Service in Malaysia's flagship smart farming initiative, Projek Ladang Padi IR4.0.
The MoU marks a significant step in Toshiba's efforts to support climate resilience and agricultural innovation in Malaysia by leveraging its forecasting technology to address the growing challenges posed by extreme weather.

Like many other countries, Japan and Malaysia are experiencing an increase in sudden, localized heavy rainstorms that are difficult to predict. In Malaysia , where prolonged monsoon rains are already a challenge, these intense downpours can physically damage paddies, and worsen ground saturation and flooding, leading to widespread damage. This rise in extreme and erratic weather highlights the urgent need for rapid and highly accurate forecasting technologies to mitigate their impact.
Toshiba launched its Weather Data Service in Japan in May 2023 , leveraging real-time radar data and the company's proprietary analysis to deliver highly accurate forecasts of localized downpours and their intensity. As part of its global expansion of the business, Toshiba signed an MoU with MyDIGITAL in February 2024 to explore the technology's application in Malaysia . Through this ongoing collaboration, Toshiba began discussions with MADA to assess the potential use of the service in MADA's flagship smart farming project, Projek Ladang Padi IR4.0.
Established in 1972, MADA leads Malaysia's largest agricultural development initiative, focused on enhancing rice productivity, farmer livelihoods and regional economic growth in the Muda region in northwest peninsula Malaysia . The current smart farming project, supported by government funding, integrates digital technologies to transform rice farming in the region.
Facilitated by MyDIGITAL, Toshiba and MADA will carry out a pilot project to evaluate how Toshiba's Weather Data Service can support agricultural decision-making in rice cultivation. In the pilot, Toshiba will analyze real-time weather radar data from the Malaysian Meteorological Department and forecast the likelihood and intensity of localized heavy rainfall. Alerts based on the analysis will be sent to MADA as needed, and MADA will use water gates to manage water flow in rice paddies. This process is expected to reduce the impact of the rainfall and protect the rice crop from damage.
Toshiba is committed to contributing to global disaster prevention and mitigation by accurately capturing and forecasting atmospheric conditions across wide and localized areas. Through applications in various industries, Toshiba aims to help realize a safer and more resilient society.

JusGO drink launched to boost local agro-food market

Arthur (second right) officiating the launch of the new JusGO drink. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 2): The Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) has launched a new agro-food product, the JusGO Mango Drink Powder, in a strategic effort to enhance the competitiveness of local farming entrepreneurs and expand the market for fruit-based products nationally and regionally. Officially unveiled on Saturday in conjunction with the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025, JusGO is based on the Tobiar Gold melon and developed by the MADA H-II Kepala Batas Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK) in collaboration with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). Using advanced spray drying technology, JusGO preserves the flavour, colour, aroma and natural nutrients of mangoes — particularly Vitamin C and Vitamin A — making it a healthy and convenient option for modern consumers. The powdered drink can be enjoyed with hot or cold water and is packaged in a lightweight, easy-to-carry design, complementing existing products like Tobiar Gold Mango Juice and ready-to-drink options. As part of the product launch, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was exchanged between PPK MADA H-II Kepala Batas and PPK Putatan, under the supervision of the Malaysian Farmers' Organisation (LPP). The MoU, witnessed by Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Dato' Sri Arthur Joseph Kurup, aims to strengthen cross-regional collaboration in areas such as promotion, distribution, technology transfer, training, and product development for agro-entrepreneurs. The initiative aligns with the Malaysia Madani vision, which emphasises community well-being through local economic empowerment, food security, and sustainable agricultural development.

Padi planting project starts ahead of schedule

ALOR SETAR: The main infrastructure development project under the five-season padi planting programme over two years in the Muda area has commenced ahead of its scheduled starting date of Aug 1. Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) chairman Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh said the project's progress is ahead of schedule, reflecting a strong commitment and seriousness in assisting farmers in the Muda area. The development project comprises two main components – the construction and maintenance of 15 Tertiary Irrigation System Blocks (Project 1), and the Pedu Dam Phase 1 Comprehensive Rehabilitation Project (Project 2), with a total allocation of RM1bil, Bernama reported. 'These 15 blocks will supply water to 560ha of padi fields. According to the original timeline, the project was scheduled to begin on Aug 1, but the contractor began work earlier,' he said. On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited the major infrastructure development project under the five-season padi cultivation programme in the Muda area, located at Batu 7, Kampung Kemboja, Ayer Hitam, near Jitra. He said the padi cultivation programme would bring comprehensive reforms to the country's padi and rice industry ecosystem, helping to reduce reliance on imports and enhance national rice self-sufficiency. Ismail added that the Prime Minister's visit marked his second to the project site, aimed at reviewing the progress of agricultural infrastructure development in line with the government's efforts to strengthen the national food supply and boost local rice production.
