The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism
The New York Botanical Garden
For over two decades, The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) Orchid Show has been one of the harbingers of springtime in New York. This phenomenal show has become more exciting each successive year.
Each edition has a different focus. This year's theme, 'The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism,' is a fusion of tradition and contemporary design. The bold, multicolored designs of Mexican architect Luis Barragan inspired the exhibition. Barragan, awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1980, is considered the foremost figure in modern Mexican architecture. The NYBG installation was conceived as a tribute to him.
The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory will be filled with thousands of flowers, including 30,000 orchid species, representing the diverse ecosystems of Mexico displayed against the backdrop of agave, cacti and bougainvillea. The bright pink and orange hues and rich scents evoke the feeling of entering a tropical Paradise.
Speaking to The New York Times, Joanna L. Groarke, the garden's vice president for exhibitions and programming, said the show aims to deliver a 'shot of color when people really need it.'
Memory-making at The New York Botanical Garden
The New York Botanical Garden
A recent McKinsey & Company report noted that hotel guests increasingly expect memorable experiences. This trend is reflected in hotels, like the Plaza, that create special experiential offers.
'...Every hotel GM [General Manager] we spoke with agreed that, ultimately, it is experience, not product, that differentiates the luxury segment.
A two-night stay at The Plaza during the New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show will undoubtedly create indelible memories for out-of-towners as well as those in the New York City metro area who want a unique staycation experience close to home.

At New York's Casa Bond Noho the Regional Diversity Of Mexican Food Is In Full Flourish
Most of the ingredients for dishes like tacos gobandador at Casa Bond are imported from Mexico. The recent evolution of Mexican food in New York has been gratifying, not so much because of deviation from the classics but by the refining of them and giving them a modern twist in terms of color, presentation and better ingredients. In the case of Casa Bond Noho, the majority of those ingredients are what owners Rodrigo, Abrajan, Mike Khuu and Luis Villanueva pride themselves on importing from Mexico. Well-set tables within a modern Mexican design provide a convivial ambience to Casa Bond. Their last restaurant was Casa Tulum at the South Street Seaport, which I very much enjoyed. The new place in NoHo is about the same size, with a happy long bar that leads to covered tables, enchanting lighting, potted ferns and comfortable chairs. The piped-in music can be annoying and is unnecessary. The menu draws from Tulum, the Yucatán, Baja California and Sinaloa, starting with a well-textured guacamole with chunks of lobster, pistachio nuggets, a dash of habanero, jicama and cilantro, to be scooped up with totopos corn crackers. It goes very well with a nicely crafted Margarita. Guacamole is full of textures from pine nuts and lobster. There are three ceviches (you can taste all of them for $49), and I especially favored the one with translucent fluke, cucumber lime, cilantro, arbol chile with a crunch of sea salt. Seasoning is everything at Casa Bond. Enchiladas Suisses come with a green mole sauce. The true measure of a Mexican kitchen depends on the quality of its tortillas, and Casa Bond's are absolutely superb––the right thickness, the right puffiness, the right chew and a good flavor of corn or wheat. The latter enwraps a quesadilla of slowly cooked short rib braised in Negro Modelo beer, with shredded, melting cheddar and morita adobo sauce. The enchilada s suizas are a substantial meal, full of abundant chicken, a pretty lacing of green tomatillo, and creamy serrano salsa, with a blend of melted cheeses. Aqua chile negro toasts at Casa Bond I hadn't expected ravioli on a Mexican menu but they're made with huitlacoche, ricotta, white truffle oil, Grana Padana cheese and fresh epazote and are a revelation of flavors that encourage more idea like this. There are three dishes meant for two but will easily serve a table of four, like the juicy confit duck carnitas with alubias beans, pickled onions and a spark of jalapeño. ou may sample three tangy ceviches on the menu at Casa Bond. For those who prefer seafood the Baja fish (for two) is a mahi mahi with cucumber mango coleslaw and habanero aïoli, while the camarones shrimp are well seasoned and served with wild rice and a puree of plantains. Every one of these dishes expands the dimensions of traditional examples you may have had elsewhere but rarely with such a synthesis of sweet, sour, salty, hot and other flavors along with wonderful textures, soft, oozing, crackling and crunchy. This carries through desserts with a lava chocolate cake with pine nuts, mole and white sesame seeds ice cream, as well as light, crunchy churros fritters with the added surprise of caramel mousse along with the usual chocolate dipping sauce, Casa Bond's wine list is sufficient for those who don't want one of the exotic cocktails or beer, and includes at least one Mexican wine from Guadalajara. One always enters a Mexican restaurant with certain expectations for certain favorite dishes, but Casa Bond goes way beyond the expected by adding to the rich diversity of regional cuisines of a kind one will only find here. CASA BOND NOHO 334 Bowery 917-639-3009 Open nightly. Sat. & Sun. For lunch.

Foo Fighters, Chappell Roan & Linkin Park to Headline Corona Capital 2025
Foo Fighters, Chappell Roan and Linkin Park will headline the 15th edition of the Corona Capital festival, which will also mark the highly anticipated return of Deftones to Mexican stages after nearly a decade, promoter OCESA announced on Tuesday (June 3). The exciting lineup for the annual rock festival — scheduled to take place from Nov. 14 to Nov. 16 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City — also includes Queens of the Stone Age, Franz Ferdinand, Garbage, Vampire Weekend, Alabama Shakes and Weezer. More from Billboard Jessie J Reveals 'Early Breast Cancer' Diagnosis: 'Cancer Sucks in Any Form' Big Thief Announce New Album, 'Double Infinity' Neil Young Invites Donald Trump to Summer Tour 'If There Is Not Martial Law by Then' 'Corona Capital is not just a festival — it's a bridge between cultures, emotions, and generations,' Memo Parra, director of international events at OCESA, tells Billboard Español. 'Since 2010, it has evolved into one of the most important festivals in the world, attracting thousands of fans from every corner of the globe to Mexico.' Parra emphasized that, with an attendance of 255,000 people per edition and a team of over 5,000 making it possible, Corona Capital is 'living proof of the power of music to bring us together.' Close to 70 artists and bands make up the 2025 lineup, including Aurora, Damiano David, James, Of Monsters and Men, AFI, Jerry Cantrell, Jehnny Beth, TV On The Radio, 4 Non Blondes, Circa Waves, Mogwai, Shermanology, Jordan Rakei, Kadavar and The Struts, among others. But the participation of Deftones will undoubtedly be one of the standout moments. The last time the Sacramento, California-based rock band performed in Mexico City was in 2014. In an interview with Billboard Español published in February, vocalist Chino Moreno said that they were in talks for what could be their big return to the country. Another highly anticipated act is Queens of the Stone Age, who had to cancel its 2024 shows — including one at the Corona Capital festival — due to health issues affecting singer and guitarist Josh Homme. 'What truly sets Corona Capital apart is its musical curation: a carefully crafted selection that has made music the backbone of the festival,' Parra adds, highlighting that people come not only to see their favorite artists, but also to 'discover new sounds and be surprised.' Corona Capital will take place in the context of the centennial celebration of the beer Corona, the festival's sponsor. Leading up to the event in November, celebrations will be held in several cities across the country under the name Corona Capital Sessions. The presale for Banamex cardholders will take place on Friday (June 6), with the general sale beginning the following day. In its 15 years of existence, Corona Capital has solidified itself as the most important international music festival in Mexico, and one of the few in Latin America featuring major English-speaking bands. In the past, it has hosted renowned acts such as Paul McCartney, Jack White, The Cure, Muse, Blur, Nine Inch Nails, Portishead, Interpol, Billie Eilish, Pixies and Richard Ashcroft. 'More than 500 international artists have taken the stage, performing for a curious, open-minded, and passionate crowd that has helped us build a space where inclusion, social impact, and Mexican cultural traditions are celebrated and shared with the world,' Parra says. Record-breaking sargassum invasion in Atlantic, Caribbean threatens to foul beach resorts
A record-breaking 37.5 million metric tons of seaweed was detected during May, with biologists warning that some Caribbean resorts may be blanketed by the naturally-occurring phenomenon during the coming weeks. According to a new report from the University of South Florida's Optical Oceanography Lab, the observed amount of seaweed was the largest detected amount in the Atlantic basin since monitoring began in 2011. 'As predicted last month, while the spatial distribution patterns of Sargassum remained stable, Sargassum amount in each region increased in May considerably,' researchers stated. 'In every (area) but the Gulf of Mexico region, Sargassum amount exceeded its historical record. In particular, total Sargassum amount from all regions combined further increased from 31 (million) tons in April to 37.5 (million) tons in May, making a new record.' Small amounts have already been detected on some beaches along the Gulf Coast and Florida, with experts and beachgoers alike wondering if or when the more substantial blooms will invade beaches across the southern US. During typical years, the Florida Keys may see widespread reports during the late spring, with more significant impacts across the Florida peninsula during the summer and fall. 5 Sargassum pile up on the coast of Playa del Carmen, Mexico on June 3, 2025. REUTERS 5 A woman picks up seaweed on a beach during its season in Mexico. REUTERS Photos and videos from eastern Puerto Rico show several waterways and beaches covered by the seaweed, with likely months to go before their inundation is over. 'Although 2025 is a record year in terms of Sargassum amount, whether a beach or small region receives record-high Sargassum inundation depends not only on the offshore Sargassum amount, but also on local factors that are difficult to predict, including winds and ocean currents,' USF staff stated. Vacation destinations on alert The exact causes of the growing blooms are not fully understood, but researchers point to climate change, fertilizer runoff and deforestation in South America as possible significant contributors. Health experts say that while the seaweed may look and smell unpleasant, it poses little risk to humans, but it can significantly impact the tourism industry. Popular beaches can turn into foul-smelling destinations, forcing local governments to spend significant resources on cleanup and restoration efforts. 5 Three men prepare to launch their sailboats in Fajardo, Puerto Rico on top of the sargassum seaweed. REUTERS 5 A woman sunbathes on a beach during the sargassum seaweed in Playa del Carmen, Mexico on June 3, 2025. REUTERS As part of the Mexican government's response, officials planned to focus on discovery and containment efforts in the waters surrounding nearly four dozen popular beaches along the Yucatán Peninsula and Caribbean coast. For areas around the Yucatán Peninsula, seaweed typically washes ashore between April and October but, due to climate change, its increased presence has become particularly problematic in recent years. It remains undetermined if the seaweed will plague Florida like in 2023, when many beaches were covered in the sticky mess. 5 A buoy barricade is deployed to contain the seaweed from piling up on the beaches in Mexico. REUTERS Looking ahead, the report expects the sargassum to continue to grow in coverage throughout June, particularly in the western Caribbean and into the Gulf. For some species of marine life, the brown algae is considered to be helpful, with biologists stating that the buildup provides food and refuge for small fish, crabs, shrimp and other organisms.
