Charleston flower shop holds steady on prices despite tariff impacts

Yahoo11-05-2025

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) — One of the most popular gifts for Mother's Day – flowers – is coming at a higher cost this year due to rising tariffs. But despite those pressures, one local florist is choosing not to pass the price increases on to customers.
Tiger Lily florist was buzzing with activity ahead of one of the busiest weekends of the year.
Owner Lisa Holmes said the Charleston-based shop has kept its prices steady, even in the face of a roughly 30% increase in product costs.
'They're about the same,' Holmes said. 'It was our decision with the world that's going on right now that we could've increased, but we chose not to,' said Holmes. 'We chose instead to get more higher-end stems that customers were asking for like peonies, or ranunculus, and put them in there for the value that they're worth. So, that strategy worked this year.'
Tiger Lily continues sourcing hand-cut, imported flowers from its vendors.
'There a lot of flowers that come from all over. For example, your Dutch product is Netherlands, Belgium, Holland – that would be tulips. Ranunculus, like I was saying before, hyacinth, which smells so amazing, that come from those areas. Your roses are from Ecuador, primarily South America,' Holmes said.
The shop also partners with local growers for peonies, daffodils and seasonal accents.
In anticipation of ongoing economic uncertainty, Holmes said the business stocked up on floral supplies such as vases and containers.
'We did purchase additional storage facilities and purchased what we call hard goods — which are things like vases etc. We have filled those to the brim with the unknown.'
Holmes said the decision to maintain quality and affordability was rooted in a commitment to customers and the store's long-standing reputation.
'The way that I look at it is nothing is permanent. We will all get through this and what we're doing is just taking less profit and we're alright with that. We have a reputation; we're going to uphold it and just be positive. So, it's what we went with,' she said.
Tiger Lily sold out of both its most affordable and most luxurious arrangements this Mother's Day season.

Apple Leaves Behind Another MacBook Air

Newly redesigned MacBook Air laptops are seen displayed during the WWDC at Apple Park on June 06, ... More 2022 kicked off the annual WWDC22 developer conference. (Photo by) With the next version of macOS expected to debut during WWDC 20205 in June, Apple will leave behind several older deskbound Macs and the MacBook Air. That will leave a handful of Intel-powered Macs still able to run the latest version of macOS. This is expected to be the MacBook Pro models from 2019 onwards, iMacs from 2020 onwards and Mac Pros from 2019 onwards. Naturally, all of the Apple Silicon-powered Mac hardware remain current. It's worth noting that while the professionally focused Intel Macs remain inside the support window, Apple has removed the consumer-focused MacBook Air. Given the comparatively low processing power of their Intel Core chipsets and the heavy demands being placed on modern computing thanks to generative AI and other processor-intensive artificial intelligence techniques, the MacBook Airs have finally passed the point where they simply can't accommodate Apple's vision of a modern operating system. Even the 2020 MacBook Pro laptops will be struggling and owners should expect this to be the last update they will see. This speaks to Apple's decision to introduce Apple Silicon across the full range of Mac hardware. Back in 2020, the increased power and performance of the M1 saw the entry-level MacBook Air leap ahead of the Intel-powered competition. That advantage has been clawed back now, but it allows Apple to fully support those older machines with the upcoming version of macOS. It has taken time, but Tim Cook and his team are close to ending their dependency on Intel and the excess resources required to support two platforms in macOS. One more year, and the focus can be 100 percent on its own proprietary platform and leverage all the advantages that this offers. Now read the latest MacBook Air, MacOS and iPhone headlines in Forbes' weekly Apple news digest...

Robert Saleh Builds San Francisco 49ers Defense With Ex New York Jets Players

Robert Saleh Builds San Francisco 49ers Defense With Ex New York Jets Players originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers cannot stop adding players that have previous playing experience with the New York Jets. Advertisement It starts with the re-hiring of defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. General manager John Lynch brought Saleh back to the Bay Area to assume the position he previously held with the 49ers from 2017-2020. The fours years since his first 49ers stint have mainly been in the Big Apple as the head coach of the New York Jets from 2021-2024. Saleh was fired by the Jets last year after a 2-3 start to the season. He then spent some time as an offensive consultant with the Green Bay Packers. Now Saleh and new 49ers special teams coordinator Brant Boyer (the Jets special teams coordinator from 2016-2024) have gone back to the well and swiped multiple players from their former team. The duo started by acquiring former New Orleans Saints Super Bowl hero and NFL veteran punter Thomas Morstead, who spent the last two seasons with the Jets. Advertisement The signing came after the 49ers made a surprising cut of punter Mitch Wishnowsky who reportedly had no injury issues. "You don't know how those things go, and you've got to take the risk-reward and something that to me wasn't a big risk or worth the risk until someone like Morstead becomes available," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "And that put us on where we needed to make a decision.' The next former Jet to travel west is linebacker Chazz Surratt who has spent the last three of his four NFL seasons in New York. Surratt, a former third-round pick in 2021, played in all 17 games last season and made the first five starts of his career. He mostly played on special teams, finishing the season with 28 total tackles (two for loss). Advertisement He projects as a swiss army knife on special teams because of his undersized build and great speed as a linebacker. Last but certainly not least comes edge rusher Bryce Huff. Huff was acquired by the Niners in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles this week. Philly's investment in Huff is often looked at as one of their team's worst moves in recent memory after an underwhelming 2024 season. However, back in 2023 as a member of, you guessed it, the New York Jets, Huff registered 10.0 sacks for his head coach Saleh. Adding Huff for just $8 million on this year's cap should do wonders for a defensive line that also features star Nick Bosa and first-round rookie Mykel Williams ... if he can return to top form. Advertisement Saleh is proving that he still has confidence in the un-drafted defensive end can. Under Saleh, the 49ers defense reached a peak of third-best in the NFL in points and yards differential in 2019. With Saleh as a head coach, the Jets defense was ranked as high as No. 18 and No. 14 in those respective stats in 2022. They may have a bunch of their former players, but 49ers fans better hope Robert Saleh's defense in San Francisco plays better than his did in New York. Cooper Flagg's Stunning Duke NIL Earnings Revealed

Cooper Flagg's Stunning Duke NIL Earnings Revealed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. During his lone season with the Duke Blue Devils, former No. 1 overall recruit Cooper Flagg lived up to the billing as the next great American prospect. Advertisement Although he and the Blue Devils fell in the Final Four to the eventual runner-up Houston Cougars, Flagg led Duke in all five major statistical categories en route to a 35-4 record. In addition to being named ACC Player of the Year, Flagg also became the ninth Duke player to be named Naismith Men's College Player of the Year. Aside from prospering on the court, many fans likely assumed that Flagg was compensated quite well off of it, thanks to his NIL earning potential. Although it's not always an exact number, his NIL Valuation according to On3 was a staggering $4.8 million. A mark that only trailed Texas quarterback and nephew of Peyton Manning, Arch Manning. However, as revealed during an interview with Bob Costas by insider and author Howard Bryant, Flagg's earnings were significantly higher than the estimated numbers. Duke Blue Devils forward Cooper Flagg (2).Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images After initially asking Costas how much money he thought Flagg brought in during his lone season in Durham, Bryant answered his own question with a jaw-dropping figure. As a result of Flagg inking monster deals with New Balance and Fanatics, he was bringing in at least $28 million on the year. Advertisement "He had a $13 million deal with New Balance and then $15 million with Fanatics," Bryant said. A staggering mark, considering an April report revealed that at least eight teams in college basketball will spend over $10 million on their entire roster for next season. While around $30 million is chump change by any means, Flagg's earnings will more than double following next month's NBA Draft. Flagg has been projected to be the top pick for over a year, and now that the Dallas Mavericks have the pick, the safest assumption in the world is that he will be heading to the Lone Star State. According to Spotrac, the No. 1 pick is set to sign a four-year deal worth nearly $63 million. Turns out being a generational basketball prospect pays quite well, who knew?
