The US Senate has passed the comprehensive 'One Big Beautiful Bill' Act, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The bill now awaits formal approval from President Donald Trump.
The One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) Act eliminates federal taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security income. It also includes expanded child tax credits and a tax break on car loans for American-made vehicles.
On the economic front, the legislation aims to protect two million family farms from so-called 'double taxation' and bolster US energy production. Supporters say it will reduce energy prices and end reliance on foreign oil, the White House said in a statement.
US Senate has passed the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' Act with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The sweeping legislation eliminates federal taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security, expands child tax credits, and supports US-made car purchases. The NCC has praised the bill for enhancing farm safety nets and urged the US House of Representatives to pass it swiftly.
The bill also claims to reduce the national deficit by over $2 trillion through spending cuts and the rollback of funding related to environmental initiatives.
Additionally, the bill includes major provisions to deport one million undocumented migrants annually, expand border enforcement, and strengthen Medicaid for vulnerable Americans. It modernises air traffic control, boosts defence with a 'Golden Dome' missile shield, and invests in the Coast Guard.
The National Cotton Council (NCC) has applauded the efforts of the US Senate, and the Senate Agriculture Committee, to ensure passage of the Act. This key legislation includes language that strengthens the farm safety net and provides necessary enhancements to support farmers navigating the current economic environment, it said in a press release.
'The NCC appreciates the momentous effort that has gone into crafting and passing the One Big Beautiful Bill,' said NCC chairman, Patrick Johnson . 'We are grateful for the Senate's commitment to delivering meaningful enhancements to the cotton safety net, which is absolutely critical for the stability and future of our industry.'
The NCC said that it strongly supports the OBBB Act and has now urged the US House of Representatives to swiftly take up and pass this legislation.
Commenting on the Act, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said: 'Today's Senate vote is a major step forward in enacting President Trump's agenda to revitalise the American economy and provide certainty to households and businesses alike. Senate Republicans have taken decisive action to prevent a $4 trillion tax hike on hardworking Americans, while securing No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, new tax cuts for seniors, and vital provisions for the manufacturing sector.
'I appreciate the tireless work of leader Thune and chairman Crapo to usher this legislation through the Senate and closer to the President's desk. We encourage House Republicans to act quickly so that we can deliver on President Trump's promises to power the future of our economy and ensure the United States remains the world's premier destination for capital and innovation.'

J&K SIA raids two places in connection with non-local killing case

Srinagar: State Investigation Agency (SIA) of J&K Police on Thursday carried out searches at the premises of two suspects in Anantnag district in connection with the non-local killing case. A statement by SIA said that these searches were carried out as part of an ongoing investigation into the brutal killing of Raja Sah on April 17, 2024, in Bijbehara. The searches aimed to uncover critical evidence to unravel the conspiracy behind this heinous crime and identify accomplices involved in the case registered under FIR No. 87/2024 under Section 302 IPC, 7/27 Arms Act, and 13, 16, and 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of Police Station Bijbehara. The meticulously planned searches were executed with precision, adhering to legal procedures, and have yielded significant evidence that is expected to strengthen the investigation. 'These efforts will aid SIA Kashmir to bring the perpetrators of this terrorist act to justice and dismantle the terror module involved in such terrorist activities,' an official said. The search operations are a crucial step toward identifying and apprehending the co-conspirators and supporters of the accused, ensuring a comprehensive probe into the murder and related unlawful activities, he said. 'The SIA J&K remain steadfast in their mission to protect the lives of citizens and counter any attempts to disrupt peace in J&K,' he said. SIA has successfully investigated and challaned some high-profile crimes investigated by the agency. Terrorists in 2002 killed advocate Babar Qadri in his home in the Hawal area of Srinagar city. Qadri was killed at his residence in Srinagar's Hawal area. While one of the terrorists waited outside the main gate to keep an eye on the happenings around, the remaining two, who were also carrying a dummy case file, were made to sit on the chairs placed in the verandah. Before his death, Qadri had accused the then-president of the High Court Bar Association, Mian Qayoom, of planning to kill him. SIA arrested Mian Qayoom and later charged him with Babar Qadri's murder in the court of law.

WB CM writes to Amit Shah over spike in fake social media content, cybercrime

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote a letter to union home minister Amit Shah, raising her concern over the spike in provocative social media content and cybercrime. Mamata Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad (PTI) 'I write to convey my deep concern over an issue that is increasingly posing serious challenges to public tranquillity and the social fabric of our nation – the proliferation of provocative content on some sections of the social media platforms and the alarming rise in cybercrimes,' Banerjee wrote in the letter. Banerjee had previously accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and fake videos, especially during the violence in Murshidabad. 'Yesterday some news was spread that I have resigned. Police have registered an FIR. The jumla party only believes in divide-and-rule policy. Fake videos are being circulated every day. Earlier attempts were made to pass off videos of Gujarat riots as those from Murshidabad,' she had said on April 2. Police had suspended internet services in some parts of Murshidabad after violence broke out in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April, to prevent the spread of misinformation. Videos of a mob attacking the block development office in Jalangi and ransacking the office of a railway gateman in Azimganj had surfaced on social media. Rioters were seen in video clips looting an outlet of a retail chain. Police had reportedly resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas after vehicles were torched, shops looted, and policemen attacked. Also Read: 3 killed, 18 cops injured in Murshidabad violence over Waqf Act; 118 held so far In the two-page letter, she said that recent 'incendiary narratives, misleading stories and fake videos' on social media have 'significantly contributed to aggravation of criminal tendencies among certain sections of society.' 'Such content not only spreads misinformation but also has the potential to inflame communal sentiments, incite violence, disrupt societal harmony and indulge in crime against women,' Banerjee added. Banerjee also highlighted the surge in cybercrime and said it is 'growing both in complexity and in its detrimental impact.' Also Read: In Murshidabad riots, rerun of an old story 'From financial frauds and identity theft to online harassment and defamation, cybercrimes are exacting a severe toll on individuals and institutions alike. The current legal framework and its enforcement require further strengthening to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem and the sophisticated methods employed by malicious actors,' she added. Banerjee urged the home minister to launch large-scale awareness campaigns to promote responsible digital behaviour, alongside sensitisation programmes, digital literacy campaigns, and community engagement initiatives. 'This is a collective challenge requiring urgent and coordinated action to safeguard public order, national unity, and the integrity of our democracy,' the Trinamool Congress posted on X.

According to news agency Reuters, the company's newest chips have been instrumental in training the largest AI models, driving an insatiable demand for its products. Nvidia, whose core technology was initially developed for video games, has seen its stock market value skyrocket nearly eight-fold over the past four years, growing from $500 billion in 2021 to nearly $4 trillion. Nvidia's market cap is more than that of all publicly listed companies in Canada and Mexico combined Cirting LSEG data, the report says that Nvidia's current valuation surpasses the combined market cap of all publicly listed companies in both Canada and Mexico, and even exceeds the total value of all publicly traded companies in the United Kingdom. Nvidia's stock has also registered a powerful rebound, climbing over 68% from its recent low on April 4. That dip occurred when Wall Street reacted to US President Donald Trump's global tariff announcements. US stocks, including Nvidia, have since recovered on expectations that the White House will finalise trade deals to mitigate the impact of Trump's tariffs.
