Tottenham: Thomas Frank provides 'brutal' James Maddison injury update as midfielder spotted on crutches
Thomas Frank has described James Maddison's injury as 'brutal' after the midfielder was taken off on a stretcher on Sunday. Maddison was withdrawn, just minutes after coming on, with his head in his hands after collapsing to the pitch during a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in South Korea. He looked distraught and the injury is a major concern for Spurs ahead of the new season, having earlier seen captain Heung-min Son bid farewell to the club before leaving. Maddison missed the end of last season with a knee injury and now looks set for another spell on the sidelines after damaging the same knee. Dejan Kulusevski will miss the start of the season and Spurs missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White, meaning Thomas Frank was already short of creative players. Frank said: 'We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before.' He added: "I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That's what we got today. 'It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players.' The full extent of the injury will remain unclear until the club conducts scans, though Maddison was spotted 'looking devastated' on crutches after the game. Frank added to SPURSPLAY: 'We don't know the full assessment of it yet, so we need to see that.' Spurs face Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup next Wednesday before kicking off the new Premier League season at home to Burnley next Saturday.

Jamal Musiala: Extent of Bayern Munich star's injury revealed as player leaves Club World Cup tie on stretcher
Paris Saint-Germain have wished Jamal Musiala well after the Bayern Munich star appeared to suffer a serious injury during the two sides' fiery Club World Cup clash, which could reportedly sideline him for up to five months. The injury - which German media outlet Sport BILD reports is a broken left fibula - occurred when Musiala collided with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma while chasing a loose ball near the byeline at the end of first-half stoppage time on Saturday. Hitting the turf and remaining there for several minutes before being stretchered off, the 22-year-old was in pain as he clutched his left ankle, which appeared to be twisted at an unnatural angle. Donnarumma was not penalised by the referee, who instead soon blew his whistle for half-time with the incident seemingly deemed to have been an accident. But the Italian shot-stopper immediately reacted with dismay, averting his gaze as players from both clubs surrounded the young Germany international and Bayern's physios were beckoned into the pitch. Musiala, making his first competitive start since early April after recovering from a muscular injury, had enjoyed a promising opening half and was preparing to inherit Bayern's iconic No10 shirt next season, but is now set for an extended period on the sidelines. BILD reports that the player has 'damaged several ligaments' in addition to breaking his left fibula, and 'will likely be out for four to five months'. 'Unfortunately, it doesn't look good,' was the assessment of Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund when asked about Musiala's injury by Club World Cup broadcasters DAZN after the match. In his own post-match comments, Bayern boss Vincent Kompany confirmed Musiala had been taken to hospital and agreed that the injury 'didn't look good'. 'The overwhelming feeling is that I hope it's not as bad as it looks, and that he will get through this one,' he added. Referencing it being the player's 'second setback in a very short time', Kompany said his 'blood boils' at such an injury happening to a player who 'lives for this'. He continued: 'It will hit hard, but he's going to get through it and come back stronger.' Meanwhile, Ousmane Dembele, who scored PSG's decisive second goal on the night following Desire Doue's opener, said the injury was 'something you don't want to see on the field' - comments echoed by PSG captain Marquinhos. "Shout out to Jamal Musiala,' both players added, while PSG manager Luis Enrique opened his post-match press conference by wishing the 'unlucky' Bayern midfielder a speedy recovery. Opposition left-back Nuno Mendes similarly told reporters after the game: 'We feel very sorry for him. He's one of the best players, and we hope he comes back stronger." Fellow PSG full-back Achraf Hakimi said it was 'important we talk about Jamal Musiala,' adding: 'I want to give my support to him. We hope to see him back on the pitch soon." PSG's official account on X also posted a message of support to Musiala after the match, wishing the Bayern player a 'swift and full recovery.'

Tottenham have new transfer priority after James Maddison injury nightmare
James Maddison's injury marred Heung-min Son's Tottenham farewell. Not long after Son left the pitch for the last time in a Spurs shirt on Sunday, Maddison was carried off on a stretcher with what Thomas Frank said was a 'bad' knee injury. Maddison immediately put his head in his hands, was visibly distressed and left the stadium on crutches. He will be assessed back in England but looks to be facing another spell out. His latest injury is a nightmare for Spurs, who were already short of creative options given Dejan Kulusevski is injured and they and missed out on signing Morgan Gibbs-White. Maddison and Kulusevski were their go-to creative outlets under Ange Postecoglou and Frank now faces a big headache ahead of the new season. Maddison's injury shines a light on the failed move for Gibbs-White, who looked set to join but Spurs failed to active his release clause he signed a new contract at Nottingham Forest. Lucas Bergvall, Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray are all young midfielders with bright futures, but none are a proven, reliable source of creativity. Bergvall has shown glimpses of attacking verve but not enough to suggest he is the answer to the problems at the tip of midfield just yet. Gray and Sarr are deeper-lying midfielders. There will be more onus on the likes of new signing Mohammed Kudus and Brennan Johnson to produce from wide positions. But Spurs could be forced back into the transfer market in the final month of the window. The influence of Brentford's Mikkel Damsgaard, who hit double figures for assists in the Premier League last season, highlights how integral a creative midfielder is to Frank. This is not an issue Spurs can ignore. Despite a positive start to life under Frank which has included an impressive pre-season win over Arsenal, Spurs now have a big problem to address ahead of the new season.
