UP Teacher Comments On Student's 'Tilak', Activists Create Ruckus In School
The furore among the Hindu organisations began last month when two sisters, identified as Manu and Soni, got admission in the school for Class 11. The classes began on July 15, but the siblings reportedly attended only two days so far - August 5 and 6. When they went to school last week, their teacher asked Manu a question that she could not answer. To this, the teacher told her to focus on her studies and that "nothing will happen by applying a tilak".
However, the student also alleged that the teacher used to throw her out of the class whenever she applied a 'tilak' on her forehead. She also alleged that many other children wearing a 'tilak' were made to wipe it before entering the class. "She often told us that if we want to worship, go to a temple and not school," she said, adding that it hurt their religious sentiments.
A week later, members of the Hindu organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) entered the school and created a ruckus, officials said. According to the teacher, many women were a part of the group who asked her to apologise to the students over her comments on applying 'tilak'.
"In our country, every religion has the freedom to wear 'tilak'. Girls from Pandit families wear it every day. What's wrong with it? Girls from Muslim families come wearing a hijab. Did you ever stop them? If someone is going to school wearing a 'tilak', then they should not be stopped. The school has decorum, and we respect it," VHP President Alok Garg said.
The school's principal, Vibha Chaudhary, said they will apologise if they have made a mistake.
"I was not aware of the incident till the group came in. The police came in and dispersed the crowd. Our school has an excellent academic record. If anyone feels that we have made a mistake, we will apologise," she said.

Vigil intensified amid calls for rituals at disputed site on Janmashtami
Prayagraj: Amid fresh reports that some locals might try to enter the disputed site at Abunagar Eidgah to perform religious rituals on Janmashtami, senior police and administrative officials of Fatehpur have imposed prohibitory orders and intensified vigil in the violence-hit area. The area saw violence on Monday when members of Hindu organisations allegedly entered the Eidgah premises and hoisted saffron flags atop a 200-year-old mausoleum on the campus, claiming that it was raised at the site of a temple. The incident, which occurred at around 10 am on Monday despite police bandobast, sparked outrage among members of the local Muslim community and led to stone-pelting between the two sides. Fatehpur police on Thursday clarified that Section 163 of BNSS (formerly Section 144) prohibitory order was currently in force in the district. All parties and the public are being informed that any kind of demonstration, procession, etc is completely prohibited at the disputed site or any other place. However, no arrest has been made so far. The police also made it clear that if any party or person makes any such call or participates in any such programme, then their act will be against the law, and strict legal action will be taken. They added that any inflammatory social media post will invite action. An appeal has been made to the masses to maintain mutual harmony and not believe in rumours. Ironically, the police have failed to take any action regarding the incident despite the fact that an FIR was lodged against 10 named individuals and 150 unknown persons for disturbing peace on Monday. Those named in the FIR included Abhishek Shukla, Dharmendra, Ashish Trivedi, Pappu Singh, Prasoon, Ritik Pal, Vinay Tiwari, Pushpraj Patel, Ajay Singh, and Devnath Dhakre. A senior police officer, preferring anonymity, told TOI, "Things are under control, and police carried out patrolling in Abunagar and adjoining areas on Thursday to maintain law and order. Cops would be deployed at static points in Abunagar and adjoining areas till Sunday. Special police teams have also been formed to maintain a strict watch on social media platforms." A bench of justice Sanjeev Narula made the observation on August 8, while dealing with a plea filed by a 26-year-old Muslim man and a 25-year-old Hindu woman, seeking police protection and accommodation in a safe house. In a petition filed last month, the couple asserted that despite solemnising their marriage after a relationship of over seven years, there was strong opposition from the woman's family. The petition said that despite writing to the deputy commissioner of police for the southeast district on July 23, requesting police protection, the police forcibly separated the woman from her husband and detained her at Nirmal Chhaya Shelter Home on July 24. The plea stated that the woman married the man voluntarily, without any coercion. On July 25, the high court directed the DCP to look into the matter personally and, if the woman affirmed her wish to live with her husband, to ensure appropriate arrangements for the couple's safety. The counsel for the woman's father, on August 8, asserted that his client was deeply troubled by his daughter's decision to marry the man without his consent and that he was concerned for his daughter's welfare. Considering the contentions, the court directed Delhi Police to continue providing them protection and accommodation in a safe house, till they solemnise their marriage under the Special Marriage Act. The bench said that parents' anguish over their daughter choosing her life partner without consultation cannot eclipse the right of an adult to choose a life partner, since Article 21 of the Constitution safeguards an individual's right to marry a person of one's choice. 'The constitutional guarantee under Article 21 enables every adult citizen may shape the course of their own life, free from fear, coercion or unlawful restraint. The choice to marry, especially across lines of faith, may test the resilience of social norms and familial expectations, yet in law, it remains a matter of personal liberty and individual autonomy, immune from any external veto. While the anguish of a parent is understandable, it cannot eclipse the rights of a major to select their life partner,' the court said. It added, 'The court is mindful of the anguish of the girl's father, who opposes the relationship on grounds that he perceives as legitimate and rooted in his concern for his daughter's welfare. However, upon attaining the age of majority, the right to make decisions regarding marriage becomes the individual's personal prerogative. Parental preference, however well-intentioned, cannot legally override that autonomy.' Noting the couple's allegation of being forcibly separated, the court directed the DCP to submit a report on whether any unlawful separation had occurred and, if so, to identify the officer responsible. The direction came after the woman claimed she was taken to a shelter home by the police against her will, while the police maintained that no coercion, unlawful action, or procedural lapse had taken place. The matter will next be heard on September 12. The same bench, in a similar plea filed by another couple, also ruled that a family's disapproval cannot override the right of two consenting adults to choose each other as life partners and live together peacefully. 'The right of two consenting adults to choose each other as life partners and to live together in peace is a facet of their personal liberty, privacy, and dignity protected under Article 21. Family disapproval cannot curtail that autonomy,' the court said in an order on August 5.
