KFSHRC detects 276 fetal genetic disorders through prenatal care saving SAR 360mln annually
KFSHRC's Preventive Fetal Screening Program identifies genetic risks and ensures targeted care during critical pregnancy stages. Paired with technologies like Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), these advancements enhance the precision and safety of prenatal diagnostics, benefiting 1,500 families annually. The Program has expanded its capacity to detect more than 500 additional genetic diseases, equipping families with early insights, reducing the birth of new-borns with severe genetic diseases, and improving overall offspring outcomes and well-being.
From screenings to therapeutic procedures and advanced surgical interventions, KFSHRC ensures well-being and trust remain at its core, shaping a healthier future for families. These efforts were recognised in 2023 when the prenatal department won a Performance Improvement Award for improving the patient experience through care accessibility and innovation.

On World Organ Donation Day KFSHRC announces 10 kidney exchange transplants completed in 48 hours
Riyadh: King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) successfully performed 10 kidney exchange transplants over two consecutive days, setting a global record for the highest number of such procedures conducted within a two-day span at a single center, coinciding with World Organ Donation Day on August 13. This milestone reinforces KFSHRC's position as a global leader in organ transplantation. This accomplishment reflects the hospital's high clinical readiness, the seamless coordination of its multidisciplinary medical teams, and its advanced systems for managing donor-recipient matching, alongside its extensive experience in executing complex transplant procedures. All of these factors enable KFSHRC to carry out this type of exchange transplantation with precision and within an exceptionally short timeframe. Paired kidney transplantation is an innovative approach that matches donor–patient pairs for mutual exchange. In this system, each donor gives a kidney to a patient with whom they have no direct relation, while their own relative receives a kidney from another donor. The process significantly improves compatibility rates and offers new hope to patients who face challenges in finding a suitable match within their families. Last year, KFSHRC celebrated a major milestone by completing more than 500 paired kidney transplants since the program was launched in 2011. Since launching its organ transplantation program in 1981, the hospital has successfully performed over 5,000 kidney transplants, placing it among an elite group of global transplant centers. In 2024, the hospital conducted 80 pediatric kidney transplants, the highest annual volume reported worldwide. This makes KFSHRC's pediatric kidney transplant program the largest of its kind compared to leading centers in the United States and Europe. Donations of living organs rise to 4.9% in Saudi Arabia in 2024
RIYADH — Saudi Arabia recorded an increase in the rate of living organ donations, reaching 4.9% last year, according to the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation. This increase is attributed to several factors, including the increased capacity of some organ transplant programs and the success of the kidney exchange program between families, which expanded donation opportunities for kidney failure patients. Technological developments have also contributed to reducing the length of stay for both donors and patients in the hospital after surgery. At the same time, kidney transplants are recording higher rates of demand among living organ donations, the center pointed out. The total number of living kidney donations reached approximately 1,284 last year, while living liver donations reached approximately 422 during the same period. According to the center, digital applications have doubled the growth in the number of deceased organ donors, or even living donors who wish to donate parts of their organs, such as livers and kidneys. The digital platform and the Tawakkalna app have enhanced the culture of organ donation and facilitated registration procedures for those wishing to donate, bringing the total number of donors to approximately 540,000. The center indicated that Saudi Arabia has 31 accredited organ transplant centers, distributed across specialties for kidney transplants that constitute 55 percent of centers, as well as for transplants of liver, heart, pancreas, lung, and intestine.
