Fit-again Renuka Singh returns as India women overlook Shafali Verma for Australia ODIs, World Cup

Fit-again pacer Renuka Singh Thakur was on Tuesday along with top-order batter Pratika Rawal but the big-hitting Shafali Verma was left out.
The squad will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur with Smriti Mandhana, who was also present at the selection meeting at BCCI's Mumbai headquarters, as her deputy in the ICC event which begins on September 30.
The selectors also announced the squad for the three ODIs against Australia which precedes the World Cup with only one change in both the sides. The series begins on September 14.

Rawal, who has done exceptionally well in 14 ODIs, was chosen ahead of hard-hitting opener Shafali as the latter was excluded from both, with chairperson of selectors Neetu David saying the right-hander remains in their focus.
'Shafali played the Australia A series. She's in the system, it is not like that she's not. We've got our eyes on her. Hope she plays a lot more and garners experience, it'll help serve India in the 50-overs format in the future. We want a long career from Shafali,' Neetu said.
All-rounder Amanjot Kaur has been given additional time to recover from her unspecified injury as she remains at the Centre of Excellence ahead of the World Cup, and in her place Sayali Satghare was named in the squad to face Australia as the solitary change in the two squads.
'She's one of the important players, she's at (the) COE, working on a few small niggles. We've rested her for the Australia series so that she can fully be available for the World Cup,' skipper Harmanpreet said.
Renuka has been out of action since March and missed the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka followed by the tour of England, but the right-arm pacer is back in the side to lead the attack.

'Renuka has been a precious player for us. She had (some) niggles and been out of the game, but is now available. She is (one of) our main players. This is a main event and it is great that she is a part of the team,' Neetu said.
Besides Renuka, India have the young seamer Kranti Goud and Arundhati Reddy in the pace attack, which could also feature Amanjot.

It is a largely settled squad which has been on a winning spree, and the selectors also stuck with young spinner Shree Charani, who grabbed 10 wickets in five T20Is against England to make a strong mark.
Charani made her international debut only in April this year and has played eight ODIs and five T20Is since.
Goud, whose aggression and attitude has impressed skipper Harmanpreet, took six wickets in the third ODI against England to tilt the result of the series in India's favour.
On expected lines, the India squad is spin-heavy with Charani teaming up with senior pros Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana and Radha Yadav in the department which would be expected to do the heavy lifting for the home team.
'Spinners have always done well for the team even when we played in England, which is why we kept (most of them) in the playing XI. This is the best team we can have (for WC),' Harmanpreet said.

Asian Shooting Championships: Saurabh Chaudhary-Suruchi Inder Singh Clinch 10m Mixed Air Pistol Bronze
Chaudhary and Singh got the better of the Chinese Taipei pairing of Liu Heng-Yu and Hsieh Hsiang-Chen 17-9 to add to the Indian medal tally. The Indian shooting duo of Saurabh Chaudhary and Suruchi Inder Singh bagged the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the Asian Shooting Championships on Wednesday. Chaudhary and Singh got the better of the Chinese Taipei pairing of Liu Heng-Yu and Hsieh Hsiang-Chen 17-9 to add to the individual bronze Manu Bhaker clinched in the women's 10m air pistol competition a day earlier. The Indian pair qualified for the medal round, placing fifth with Suruchi firing 292 and Saurabh scoring 286. The duo aggregated 578 in the qualification round to be placed fifth going into the eight-team medal round. Suruchi, who has been on song this season, winning four World Cup medals, started the qualification round with a perfect 100 in the opening series, faltered in the second to score 94, and ended the preliminary round with a 98. Chaudhary had series scores of 95, 96, and 95. Earlier at the event, Bhaker achieved a score of 219.7 in the eight-women finals, securing third place. China's Qianke Ma won the gold medal with a score of 243.2, narrowly surpassing Korean Jiin Yang, who took the silver with 241.6. The 23-year-old Bhaker advanced to the final by finishing third in the qualifications, scoring 583. Korea's Yejin Oh led the qualifications with a score of 585, but she was competing for ranking points only, allowing China's Qianxun Yao to enter the final as the top-ranked shooter. Esha Singh, also competing for ranking points, finished ninth with 577, while Suruchi Singh secured 12th place with 574. Palak ended in 17th position with 573, and Surbhi Rao (RPO) was 25th with 570. The team of Bhaker, Suruchi Singh, and Palak finished third in the team event, with a combined score of 1730. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India's Asia Cup 2025 Squad If Only IPL 2025 Performances Were Considered
After much contemplation and some bold decisions, India's Asia Cup 2025 squad was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar on Tuesday. With T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav in company, Agarkar left many surprised as he confirmed the return of Shubman Gill to India's T20I squad, in the capacity of a vice-captain. The squad selection didn't come from a single school of thought, with both continuity, form and potential being considered while naming the 15-member squad. India head coach Gautam Gambhir, however, had once said that the country's shortest format team should be based on performances in the IPL. If only IPL 2025 was considered for Asia Cup selection, here's how the 15-member roster might have looked: Sai Sudharsan - Opener, anchor (759 runs, SR 156.17): He was also the Orange Cap winner in the last edition of the Indian Premier League. However, Sudharsan doesn't even feature in India's 5-member reserve team for the Asia Cup. Abhishek Sharma - Opener, aggressive, part-time bowler (439 runs, SR 193.39): Abhishek Sharma managed to fend off competition by Yashasvi Jaiswal to seal a spot in India's 15-member Asia Cup squad. Being the No. 1 ranked T20I batter, he is a certainty in India's T20I team Shubman Gill - Opener/No. 3, consistent (650 runs, SR 156): Though his addition to India's Asia Cup squad was a surprise for some, Gill's performances in the IPL does warrant him a place in the squad, especially when coupled with the current form. Suryakumar Yadav (C) - Middle-order, captain (717 runs, SR 167.91): Arguably India's finest T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav does walk into any T20 team in the world, any given day. Shreyas Iyer - Middle-order, spin-hitter (604 runs, SR 175.07): Arguably the biggest omissions from India's Asia Cup squad, Shreyas Iyer is bound to feel heartbroken. The Punjab Kings captain was a revelation this season, helping his team qualify for the final while leading from the front. Tilak Varma - Middle-order, versatile (343 runs, SR 138.30): One of the most improved players in the team, Tilak Varma is the No. 2 ranked batter in the world at present. His adaptability to different roles in the middle-order aids his selection case. Hardik Pandya - All-rounder, finisher, pacer (224 runs, SR 163 and 14 wickets): Unarguably India's finest pace-bowling all-rounder, Hardik adds the balance to the team that no other player does. Axar Patel - Spin-bowling all-rounder (263 runs, SR 157.48, 5 wickets): Another versatile performer who can function at various positions in the middle-order, Axar is arguably India's finest spin-bowling all-rounder at present. KL Rahul (WK) - Wicketkeeper, opener/middle-order (539 runs, SR 149.72): Tough choice to pick between Rahul and Samson, but it's the Delhi Capitals lad who makes the cut. The move, however, is a little risky as he isn't as accustomed to playing in the middle-order in T20Is as he is in other formats. Jitesh Sharma (WK) - Wicketkeeper, finisher (261 runs, SR 176.35): Jitesh too beats Samson on the basis of a healthier strike-rate and ability to bat in the lower middle-order, which the team would need, based on other selections. Jasprit Bumrah - Pacer (18 wickets, economy 6.67): No justification needed, Bumrah walks into any team in the world, in any format. Prasidh Krishna - Pacer (25 wickets, Eco 8.27): A better option than Harshit Rana, based on IPL 2025 show, for the Asia Cup squad. Prasidh was also the Purple Cap winner in the T20 league this season. Arshdeep Singh - Pacer (21 wickets, SR 8.88): Second-highest wicket-taker among Indians in IPL 2025, Arshdeep Singh is a no-brainer for India for the Asia Cup in UAE. Varun Chakravarthy - Ajinkya Rahane 's captaincy.

R Ashwin Says "Sanju Samson Not Going To Play", Shubman Gill Is The Reason. Here's Why
Team India's Asia Cup 2025 squad has given former cricketers and pundits plenty to talk about. Shubman Gill 's return to the T20I set in the capacity of Suryakumar Yadav 's deputy saw some of the other players being forced out of the team. There was no place for the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer in the team. However, former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin feels Gill's return is set to see Sanju Samson being dropped to the bench too. In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin expressed sympathy with Jaiswal and Iyer after the duo found no place in India's 15-member squad. Though Ashwin admitted that team selection is a thankless job, he hopes the snubbed players were explained the reasons behind the decisions taken by the BCCI selection committee. "See, I understand that selection is a thankless job. Leaving somebody out, telling someone they are dropped, it is not an easy thing. You have to speak to the players, you have to go through the sadness. I just hope Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal were given a call, and they were told the reasons behind not being picked," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. "Genuinely, I understand Shubman Gill's selection. He is also the vice-captain. He has scored a lot of runs for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He has credentials to be picked in the T20I setup," he added. Ashwin admitted that Shubman too deserved a place in the team but the selectors 'were not fair' to Jaiswal and Iyer. "When you have Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener in the T20 World Cup 2024, to remove someone from the World Cup squad and bring in Shubman Gill. I mean, it's okay, I am happy for Shubman, but I'm very sad for both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. It is just not fair to these two kids," said Ashwin. Agarkar also hinted that Gill is being groomed as the man to lead India in all three formats, hence his elevation as the T20I vice-captain. But, Ashwin doesn't think such a step was necessary either. "Jaiswal has also been in some fine form. Maybe they are thinking of Shubman Gill as the leader for the future. Maybe he can be the all-format captain. But it is not necessary to have the same captain in all formats," said Ashwin. Gill's promotion as Suryakumar's deputy makes him a certain pick in the Indian XI. Hence, the batter will most likely open alongside Abhishek Sharma for India, possibly forcing the management to leave Sanju Samson on the bench.
