Cardiff Council Commits to Becoming Endometriosis Friendly Employer

Cardiff Council is the latest organisation pledging to support colleagues impacted by endometriosis by joining the Endometriosis Friendly Employer scheme.
With 14,800 staff, it becomes the largest local government body to make this commitment, and is only the second in Wales to do so, following Powys County Council.
Through the scheme, which is run by charity Endometriosis UK, Cardiff Council will improve its support for those affected by this common disease, as well as breaking down taboos and stigmas around menstrual health.
Endometriosis impacts the physical and mental health of one in 10 women and those assigned female at birth from puberty to menopause, although the impact may be felt for life.
Symptoms include chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, painful bowel movements and pain when urinating. Despite being so common, it takes an average of nine years and 11 months to get diagnosed in Wales – the longest of any UK nation – for reasons including lack of understanding of the disease.
As part of the scheme, Cardiff Council has appointed Endometriosis Champions, who will receive training from Endometriosis UK, to enable them to provide support and information to its workforce.

'By showing its team that they are valued and can expect support and reasonable adjustments to help those with endometriosis and menstrual conditions succeed at work, they will be increasing engagement across the whole of their workforce, ultimately making the organisation more successful.'
Endometriosis Champion at Cardiff Council, Frances Sheppard, said:
'Having personally navigated the challenges of diagnosis and surgery for endometriosis, I understand how isolating and overwhelming the journey can be. I want to be a source of support and guidance for others, offering advice, empathy, and encouragement to help them feel less alone.'
Fellow Endometriosis Champion Sian Coleman said:
'By becoming an Endometriosis Friendly Champion, I hope to raise awareness of endometriosis and ensure that both employees and managers receive the support and guidance they need.'
Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, said:
'We're delighted to join the Endometriosis Friendly Employer scheme to ensure we can start to better understand and support those in the workplace with endometriosis, as well as break down taboos about menstrual health. We look forward to working with Endometriosis UK, and hope that we'll inspire others to join the scheme as well.'
Endometriosis UK champions the rights and needs of the more than 1.5 million in the UK with endometriosis.
As well as providing support services, reliable information and a community for those affected by endometriosis, Endometriosis UK works to ensure that everyone with endometriosis gets prompt diagnosis and the best treatment and support, to end chronic menstrual related pain being brushed off as normal, and to raise awareness of endometriosis with the wider public.
Endometriosis occurs when cells similar to the ones in the lining of the womb (uterus) are found elsewhere in the body. These cells can grow and change in response to hormones in the menstrual cycle, this can cause inflammation, pain and scar tissue. Endometriosis is most commonly found on the lining of the pelvis (peritoneum) and may occur in the ovaries and involve other pelvic organs, like the bowel or bladder. Less commonly, endometriosis can also be found outside the pelvis, such as in the chest.

County councillors have written to the First Minister Eluned Morgan calling for the end of 'discriminatory waiting times' for Powys Patients. A letter penned by the chairman of Powys County Council, William Powell, with the cross-party backing of councillors after a recent vote, has called for the end of a policy which has deliberately extended wait times for operations for Powys patients in England. The policy, which came into effect earlier this month, deliberately lengthened wait times for patients being treated in English hospitals, which has seen some patients have to wait as much as an extra year for operations. A motion for the letter was put forward by Cllr Beverley Baynham and seconded by Cllr Joy Jones received the backing of a full council meeting. The vote voiced the opinion of councillors to 'oppose the discriminatory waiting time disparities and advocate for equitable treatment for Powys patients attending English hospitals'. The letter by Cllr Powell calls on First Minister, Eluned Morgan, to intervene and asks that 'the Welsh Government to provide immediate funding support to Powys Teaching Health Board, addressing the challenges of cross-border healthcare commissioning and ensuring equitable access to timely care for Powys residents'. It also demands "systemic changes in healthcare policies that ensure all patients, regardless of residency, receive fair and timely treatment". In response to an enquiry by the County Times earlier this week, a Welsh Government spokesperson said: 'We remain committed to reducing waiting times and ensuring everyone in Wales – including those in Powys - has equitable and timely access to treatment. 'We have been clear that all NHS Wales organisations must plan and deliver services for their population in line with Welsh Government targets and within the financial and staffing resources available.' The move builds on pressure from other local political figures. MP for Brecon and Radnorshire David Chadwick has raised the matter in Parliament, labelled the policy 'a disaster from start to end' and has now put together a petition calling for it to be scrapped. The Labour MP for Montgomeryshire, Steve Witherden, has previously labelled the policy as 'ghastly' and 'blatantly discriminatory'. Powys council urges hundreds to check PIP eligibility

Hundreds of adults in Powys could be missing out on financial support. Powys County Council believes more than 700 people with a disability or long-term health condition may be eligible for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) but are not currently claiming it. Cllr Matthew Dorrance, deputy leader and cabinet member for a Fairer Powys, said: "If you have a long-term health condition, or disability, and need help with everyday tasks, or with getting around, then you could be eligible for PIP. "We are here to help, if needed, and want to make sure that everyone is receiving all the financial help they are entitled to, especially households with children. "More than 200 of these letters will be going to parents, or other adults who are looking after a child in Powys." The council identified the individuals using data analytics and will write to them over the coming weeks to encourage them to check their eligibility for PIP. Eligible individuals could receive several thousand pounds extra per year. Those identified are already receiving Universal Credit or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and are classified as having Limited Capability for Work-Related Activity (LCWRA), but are not currently claiming PIP. PIP is available to people who have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability and who struggle with everyday tasks or mobility. The council's letter explains the benefits and offers support with the application process. To support the effort, Powys County Council has invested in the Low Income Family Tracker (LIFT), an intelligent data analytics platform designed to identify those most in need. Cllr Dorrance said: "The LIFT platform should help us target our help where it's most needed." This follows action taken in June, when the council wrote to nearly 900 households believed to be struggling financially, offering support. Those households were invited to access free and confidential help, including advice on managing household bills, energy costs, benefits, budgeting, and debt. This support remains available to anyone in Powys facing financial difficulties. The council's trained advisors can provide support online, by phone, in person at a council office, in the community, or at people's homes.
