TOI Ecopreneur Honours 2025: IFFCO MD Dr Udai Shanker Awasthi calls for sustainable agriculture and youth action

Time of India2 days ago
At the TOI Ecopreneur Honours 2025 held on Monday, Dr Udai Shanker Awasthi, Managing Director of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO), emphasised the urgent need for sustainable agriculture and environmental responsibility.
Speaking during his keynote address, Dr Awasthi urged India's youth and eco-entrepreneurs to lead the way in developing solutions that balance growth with environmental protection.
'The whole idea of saving the planet began when we realised that our own development was creating problems,' Dr Awasthi said.
He noted that while development is necessary, it also increases the use of energy and natural resources, which causes damage to the environment.
Dr Awasthi stressed that the time has come to correct this imbalance. He said that sustainable agriculture is one of the most pressing challenges for every country, including those in the Middle East, which are now also looking at eco-friendly farming methods. 'We don't need to change everything overnight. But we do need to move in the right direction. And things are slowly changing,' he said.
He pointed to carbon dioxide emissions and methane from traditional chemical fertilisers, such as urea, as major contributors to environmental harm.

He highlighted the need to switch to alternatives like nano fertilisers, which have a smaller ecological impact.
Calling eco-entrepreneurs 'much needed,' Dr Awasthi said, 'The patents and innovations by eco-preneurs must be protected. Their products and the money invested in them must not go to waste.' He also shared ideas for young entrepreneurs, especially in rural areas, encouraging them to focus on long-term, sustainable development solutions.
'Profit and planet can and must co-exist':
Prasad Sanyal
The event opened with an address by Prasad Sanyal, Business Head of The Times of India (digital), who welcomed attendees and set the tone for the evening. He said the Ecopreneur Honours recognises those who are working quietly yet effectively in the field of sustainability.
'In today's noisy world, there are still places where people work with intent, sustainability,' Sanyal said. He pointed out that sustainability is no longer a side concern and that 'the new India is looking for meaning.'
Sanyal added that the awards aim to honour individuals and organisations that have helped shape policy, promoted green growth, and taken real action against the climate crisis. 'Profit and planet can and must co-exist,' he said.
He ended his speech by reminding everyone of the urgency of climate change. 'Climate crisis is today's lived reality,' Sanyal said, adding that in this context, 'recognition matters.'
The TOI Ecopreneur Honours celebrates sustainability champions across India — from individuals to corporates — who are building a greener future.

Fire dept mulls third-party safety audits in industrial units

1 2 Hyderabad: A third-party audit of industries, particularly pharmaceutical companies, is being planned by Telangana fire department in industrial areas such as Pashamailaram, IDA Bollarum, Nacharam, Jeedimetla and other industrial hubs. Officials said a proposal was already sent to the govt recently, and the audits might begin over the next two months. The move comes following a chemical blast at Sigachi Industries in Pashmailaram, which lacked significant fire safety norms, including the absence of a fire system and emergency exits, among others. Over the past decade, Telangana had witnessed 102 major fire incidents at pharma units, resulting in losses of 100 crore. Fire department director GV Narayana Rao said that while some old industries started complying with norms, several others were running without any compliance. He stressed that fire audit would encourage companies to improve their safety measures and reduce the risk of dangerous accidents. But pharmaceuticals units house hazardous, inflammable, and highly reactive chemicals and solvents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Become Fluent in Any Language Talkpal AI Undo In the Sigachi blast also, it was claimed that it was a low hazard factory, but look what happened. The idea is to conduct a fire department as well as a third-party audit to ensure fire-fighting systems are integrated properly. Electrical wiring and equipment maintenance will also be checked," Rao added. Based on hazard levels, National Building Code (NBC) categorises industrial buildings into low, medium, and high hazard structures. These classifications are used to determine appropriate fire safety and other relevant design requirements, including an in-house underground or terrace water storage tank ranging from 20,000 litres to 1.5 lakh litres. Apart from them, automatic sprinkler systems, fire detectors, fire alarm systems, wet risers, and fire hydrants are also mandated. "To monitor and maintain round the clock, companies can use technologies such as internet of things (IoT) devices. But strict safety protocols are required. We have also asked our district fire officers (DFOs) to regularly inspect all the industries," Rao added. Welcoming the decision, city-based infrastructure consultant, SP Anchuri, stressed that there needs to be multi-departmental inspections every two months to mark a clear return to safety-first thinking. "But gaps might still remain as there is no risk-based grading to prioritise the most hazardous units. Moreover, the manpower and implementation capacity need scaling to match inspection frequency. Worker-level feedback and whistleblower protection, which plays a more important role, also need to be considered," he said. Anchuri added that while audits were only the beginning, complete safety lies in integrated design thinking comprising risk awareness. Meanwhile, the fire department officials stressed that once started, industrial units must take proactive responsibility by getting audits done and submitting them online.

HC upholds order directing co-op bank to pay Rs 9.7L gratuity to retd employee

1 2 Cuttack: In a significant ruling, the Orissa high court has upheld the decision directing Cuttack Central Cooperative Bank Ltd to pay Rs 9.79 lakh in gratuity, along with interest, to retired employee Nalinikanta Sarangi. The amount was withheld citing a pending vigilance case against Sarangi. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice M S Raman dismissed a writ appeal filed by the bank against a single-judge order on Oct 9, 2024, which had refused to interfere with the direction passed by the controlling authority and affirmed by the joint labour commissioner-cum-appellate authority on March 28, 2022. In its July 30 order, the bench noted that the single judge had provided adequate reasoning for the decision and had thoroughly considered the factual and legal aspects of the case. "We do not find the contention that the judgment is bereft of any reason to be correct," the bench observed, adding that the single judge had not only recapitulated the facts but also considered the statute and relevant precedents. The bank had argued that gratuity should not be disbursed as disciplinary and criminal proceedings were pending. However, the division bench rejected the argument, pointing out that the proceedings had not reached any conclusion, and the employee had already retired. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Online & Flexible degrees BITS Pilani Digital Apply Now Undo The court clarified that the Payment of Gratuity Act does not permit withholding gratuity due to pending disciplinary or vigilance proceedings unless there is an explicit provision to that effect. "An authority cannot withhold the statutory amount which the employee is entitled to unless conferred with such power. The authorities cannot act contrary to statutory provisions," the bench observed. With this order, Sarangi, who superannuated as assistant manager on Feb 28, 2013, will receive his dues after over 12 years. Advocate Sougat Dash argued on Sarangi's behalf, while advocate Patanjali Tripathy represented the bank. The judgment is expected to have wider implications for similar cases where gratuity payments are delayed on the grounds of ongoing investigations.

Forum tells club to refund couple Rs 45,000 for not providing promised travel package

Ghaziabad: A district consumer commission has ordered Sheraton Club Private Limited to refund Rs 45,000 and pay Rs 5,000 in compensation to a Ghaziabad couple after the company failed to deliver on a hospitality package. Navendu Mohan Mishra and his wife Sneha, residents of Rajnagar Extension, submitted a complaint against the Sheraton Club Private Limited, which has its corporate office in Noida, its directors Chanveer Singh Bhogal and Manindar Kaur, alleging that they purchased a three-year membership on Jan 26, 2022, which included a package of hotel stays, food vouchers, and other hospitality benefits but did not receive any of the hospitality services it promised. The club, they claimed, stopped responding to calls and emails shortly after collecting the payment. Mishra told the forum that he made repeated attempts to contact the club before sending it a legal notice on April 27, 2022, but did not receive any response. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo Admitting the matter, the commission, led by president Praveen Kumar Jain and members Shailja Sachan and RP Singh, issued a notice to the club management. With no representation or reply from the club, the case was heard ex parte. After reviewing the documents, including payment proofs and terms of the agreement, the commission ruled in favour of the complainants on Aug 1. It found the club guilty of deficiency in service and directed it to refund the full membership fee and pay an additional Rs 5,000 in compensation within 45 days. The forum said if the payment was delayed, the amount would accrue interest at 6% per annum from the date of the order until settlement.
