Lewis Hamilton rues costly late error that cost him front-row grid spot

Rhyl Journal6 days ago
Max Verstappen came from nowhere to take his third pole of the year with a brilliant lap to silence the Silverstone crowd. Oscar Piastri finished second with McLaren team-mate and championship rival Lando Norris third.
George Russell will occupy fourth on the grid for Mercedes, while Hamilton – despite appearing to be in the mix for his 105th career pole and his first in Ferrari colours – finished only fifth.
Hamilton's transfer from Mercedes to the Italian giants has so far failed to live up to its blockbuster billing, but the driver who has won the British Grand Prix a record nine times, was fastest in Q2, and then headed into the final runs in the decisive Q3 with only Piastri ahead of him. Silverstone held its breath.
However, disaster struck at the concluding right-hander when Hamilton ran ever so slightly off line. The error denied him at least a spot on the front row, and possibly even his first pole in 714 days, with the top five separated by only two tenths.
A downbeat Hamilton said: 'I just had understeer at Turn 16 and lost the time that I had. It probably cost me at least a second. The lap was really, really nice, it was just that last corner.
'I don't know if it was the kerb that sent me a little bit wide? I just lost it. It was just over a tenth so that would definitely have put me on the front row.
'The understeer is something that you get with this car. It is what you do when you are overdriving to get that extra bit of time.'

Hamilton has failed to finish in the top three in his first 11 races as a Ferrari driver – the deepest he has ever gone into a season without a podium.
However, the seven-time world champion has an outside chance of changing that run, and extending his stunning record of stepping on to the rostrum in every race staged at Silverstone since 2014.
He will also take some comfort for out-qualifying Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc, one spot behind him, for only the fourth time this year.
Hamilton continued: 'I've got four really fast cars right in front of me. I want to go forwards if I can. I just want to be in the fight.'
Verstappen will line up from the front following a scintillating lap which allowed him to beat Piastri by 0.103 seconds with Norris third, 0.118 seconds adrift. Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Yuki Tsunoda qualified only 12th.
Norris starts his home race 15 points behind Piastri in the world championship, and he will have to force himself ahead of his team-mate to prevent the Australian from extending his title advantage.
'I'm not going to be unhappy with third, although I'd love to have been on top here at Silverstone,' said Norris.
'It is going to be fun tomorrow, a good battle between all of us, and I am looking forward to it.'

Verstappen makes decision on future after Horner axe as brother-in-law speaks

The brother of Max Verstappen's long-term partner has hinted that the Red Bull star is likely to join Mercedes ahead of next season and won't be taking a sabbatical from F1 The brother of Max Verstappen's long-term girlfriend has dropped a major hint that the Red Bull driver could be set to switch to Mercedes before the next season and has also dismissed the idea of Verstappen taking a break from F1. The rumour mill has been in overdrive for some time with talk of Verstappen making a move to Toto Wolff's team. However, the unexpected dismissal of Red Bull boss Christian Horner this week has only added fuel to the fire that the four-time world champion might be on his way to join the Silver Arrows, potentially replacing the underperforming George Russell. ‌ Mercedes had a day to forget at Silverstone last week, with Russell only managing to secure a P10 finish and Kimi Antonelli failing to complete the race due to a collision. ‌ Red Bull didn't fare much better, as Verstappen crossed the line in fifth place, maintaining his third position in the drivers' standings but losing further ground to McLaren pair Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who are currently sitting in first and second places respectively. Verstappen has been in a relationship with Kelly Piquet since 2020, and her brother Nelson Piquet Jr., has now used his insider knowledge to shed some light on the F1 star's potential next career move. Speaking on the Pelas Pistas Podcast, the former F1 driver was discussing the British Grand Prix and how close Verstappen, 27, is to jumping ship, reports the Express. ‌ "There are some weekends when things just don't go your way, right?," Nelson said. "There's nothing you can do. One of the [Mercedes] drivers [Antonelli] is a rookie who also got hit from behind by [Racing Bulls driver, Isack] Hadjar. In any case, it just wasn't their [Mercedes] weekend. Who knows, maybe next year Max will be there." He continued: "They're talking, everyone knows that. What remains to be seen is whether they'll come to an agreement contractually. But that is an option, everyone knows that. It's being discussed." ‌ Both Antonelli and Russell are yet to sign fresh contracts with Mercedes, whilst team boss Wolff has been open about his ambition to secure Verstappen in what has become a highly public chase spanning several years. Verstappen remains tied to Red Bull until 2028, though his contract contains escape clauses that could facilitate a swift departure to a rival outfit. Nelson dismissed suggestions that Verstappen might step away from the sport temporarily next season, instead believing a crucial decision is imminent, whilst even offering his own forecast about who Verstappen might partner at Mercedes. ‌ Discussing the rumours about Verstappen's future with Mercedes and the possibility of a break from F1, he added: "He will be there [F1]. I think by August he'll have made his decision. They'll either come to an agreement or not. That would be interesting. Ah, if he goes there, it will be Antonelli (who stays at Mercedes). It will definitely be Antonelli. Absolutely." Red Bull announced Horner's dismissal from the team on Wednesday after a remarkable 20-year stint. A slump in form prompted the team to make changes as they fell to fourth in the Constructors' Championship, paving the way for Laurent Mekies to take over. Despite whispers of tension between Horner and Verstappen, the Dutch champion took to social media to pay tribute to the 51-year-old following his exit. Posting on X, Verstappen wrote: "From my first race win, to four world championships, we have shared incredible successes. Winning memorable races and breaking countless records. Thank you for everything, Christian!".

Outcomes of 5 Chelsea players signed by Mikel Arteta before Noni Madueke

Mikel Arteta is no stranger to signing Chelsea players and Arsenal are set to finalise a deal for Noni Madueke after agreeing a deal with the Blues for a transfer Noni Madueke looks set to become Arsenal's latest signing in a busy start to July in the transfer market. In the space of a week the England international could join the likes of Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard in arriving at the Emirates. The winger has been provided permission by Chelsea to depart the United States on the eve of the Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain to finalise a £52million move to the Gunners. Madueke is set to sign a five-year deal as he seals a move to the Emirates. ‌ It is not the first time Mikel Arteta has added to his squad from Arsenal's London rivals. And it's not even the first time this summer after the Gunners prised Kepa Arrizabalaga away from Stamford Bridge in a £5m deal little over a week ago. ‌ And it appears whether it is Edu or Andrea Berta in charge of transfers, the club are more than happy to go back to the Chelsea well as they attempt to transform from also-rans to Premier League winners. But how successful has the tactic been so far? Mirror Football takes a look at what happened to the players signed before Madueke and Kepa, with the latter not having had time to make his mark. Willian The Brazilian winger got off to a quick start after joining Arsenal to bag two assists on his debut against Fulham. By the end of the season Willian had just one goal to his name for the club however. ‌ After little over a year at the club, Willian and Arsenal came to an agreement to end his time in north London via mutal consent. The Premier League veteran later described the period as 'the worst time that he had lived as a professional'. Jorginho Jorginho was a 'bit surprised' over his move to Arsenal in January 2023. The £12m deal caught much of the footballing world off guard as Arsenal moved on from trying to sign Moises Caicedo. ‌ "I know he tried a few times to get me before and it didn't happen due to other reasons, not because of my wishes," Jorginho said upon signing for the club. Arteta hoped the signing would add to the squad's depth and the Italian proved useful on his way to 79 appearances across two-and-a-half seasons. Jorginho earned an extension to his initial deal but saw his contract end in 2025 as he opted for a move to Brazil. Kai Havertz The German's move across London was another that raised eyebrows as Arsenal stumped up £65m for Chelsea's Champions League final goalscorer. Arteta had intentions to utilise Havertz as a midfielder before being required to push the player further forward. ‌ And whereas he'd sometimes struggled leading the Blues' frontline, the ex-Bayer Leverkusen ace proved a useful stand-in for Arteta. Havertz has scored 29 goals and provided 13 assists in 87 appearances for Arsenal thus far and a stint at the end of 2023/24 saw four Premier League goals and three assists across five games. A significant injury in a mid-season training camp stopped him in his tracks at the beginning of 2025 as he was forced to go under the knife. But the Germany international has been noted by Arteta to have undergone a physical transformation in his time away from the pitch as he returned for the final two games of the season. ‌ Raheem Sterling The winger had a forgetable spell at Arsenal, after joining the club on a season-long loan. Arteta would have hoped he could rekindle the form he saw coaching at Manchester City as the Gunners attempted to take advantage of an opportunity late in the transfer window. Sterling was unable to break into Arteta's first team plans for the most part and scored just once in his season with the club. The 30-year-old made 13 starts but often didn't make it off the bench.
