Al Attiyah win Qatar International Rally; MERC2 success for Oman's Al Aamri

Muscat Daily08-02-2025

Lusail, Qatar – Nasser al Attiyah and his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera won five of the 13 special stages on the way to a resounding victory in the Qatar International Rally on Saturday.
A second success of the Qatari's 2025 campaign to win a 20th FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) title also marked his 18th in Qatar from 25 starts and gives him a strong foundation on which to build this year's title challenge in his Autotek-run Škoda Fabia RS. The win was the 88th in his illustrious MERC career.
A delighted Al Attiyah said: 'I am really happy to win this race. It is a home rally and we did a good job. I am happy with Candido and the team. It is a nice start for 2025. Just 0.8 (seconds) between me and Mads on the Power Stage. It was a good level.'
On his fourth visit to the event, Mads Ostberg finished as runner-up for a third year in succession after failing to finish on his first appearance in 2022. Punctures on Friday put paid to an aggressive challenge by the Norwegian and his Romanian co-driver Sergiu Itu but the crew won eight of the 13 stages, including a clean sweep of six fastest times over the final day to finish 1min 12.8sec behind Al Attiyah.
Abdulaziz al Kuwari and Lorcan Moore ceded second to Ostberg on the first stage of the morning but were able to fend off a fierce late challenge from Abdullah al Rawahi and Ata al Hmoud to claim the final place on the podium and a vital haul of MERC points in their Citroën C3 by just 3.3 seconds.
Fourth-placed Al Rawahi said: 'We pushed like crazy, just three seconds away. Unfortunately, we lost some time on one stage and we had a lot of punctures on the first day, Anyway, I am happy with this performance. The pace is there but I got some penalties and I was quite unlucky with the punctures.'
Rakan al Rashed enjoyed his first appearance in Qatar and managed his pace sensibly over the two days of high-speed action in the northern deserts to finish fifth overall in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally 2 with Portuguese co-driver Hugo Magalhães. Coupled with his runner-up spot at round one in Oman, Al-Rashed is now in a strong position to challenge championship leader Al Attiyah this season.
The Saudi said: 'I am happy to be here. Obviously, it's unclear where my pace is. I am still getting confused. After this rally we are going to have to review all the weekend and see where we can improve. I'm happy that we finished and looking forward now to my home event.'
Nasser Khalifa al Atya is chasing Masters Championship and MERC points with Lebanese co-driver Ziad Chehab in a Motortune Ford Fiesta. He surrendered sixth overall to a hard-charging Denis Krotov and Yury Kulikov in their SRT Škoda Fabia RS but earned a second win in the new Masters Championship and collected valuable MERC points to boot with seventh overall.
Rashid al Muhannadi guided his Peugeot 208 Rally 4 to a second successive victory in the MERC4 category. The Qatari teamed up with Irishman Gary Mcelhinney again to finish eighth.
The battle for supremacy in MERC2 developed into a showdown between the Omani duo of Abdullah al Zubair and Zakariya al Aamri. Mechanical issues sidelined Al-Zubair before the penultimate stage and that opened the door for Al Aamri to claim the win and 10th overall behind ninth-placed Jordanian driver Shadi Shaban.
Jad al Aawar and Ahmad Khaled were second and fourth in MERC2 and 11th and 13th overall with Kuwait's Jassim al Muqahwi sandwiched between the Lebanese duo.
His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, Minister of Sports and Youth, attended the start of the rally along with His Excellency Abdullah bin Hamad al Attiyah, Minister of Municipality.

Hong Kong: Spain will host two Formula One grands prix in 2026, with the new race in Madrid joining Barcelona, after organisers on Tuesday announced the calendar for a season that could bring big changes on the grid. The 2026 campaign will open for the second successive season in Australia at Melbourne's Albert Park street circuit on March 6-8. Montreal in Canada will now follow Miami in May to cut down on travelling for the teams. Spain's Marc Marquez wins Aragon MotoGP

ALCANIZ, Spain: Six-time world champion Marc Marquez eased to victory over his younger brother Alex in the Aragon MotoGP on Sunday to extend his lead in this season's title race. Marc Marquez led from start to finish on his Ducati to record his seventh win in this race from 11 starts and his fourth victory of the campaign. He leads his brother by 32 points after eight of the 22-race programme with two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia, who was third, 93 points adrift. Marc is well set for a seventh world title which would bring him level with Valentino Rossi and one shy of the record held by the latter's fellow Italian Giacomo Agostini. "Yes a perfect weekend," said Marc Marquez, who became the first rider since he did the same in the 2015 German MotoGP to top all the practice sessions, take pole and win the race. "I was more serious than usual as I felt I couldn't afford to make mistakes. "I rode in a very good way," added Marc, who ended a three-race losing streak. The two brothers got off their bikes halfway round the victory lap and jumped into each other's arms, though, unable to kiss as they still had their helmets on and sending the 50,000 spectators wild. "To be brothers and Spanish in front of a home crowd is extra special for me," said Alex Marquez, who at 29 is three years his brother's junior. Marc echoed his words and said it made up for the disappointment of the Spanish MotoGP in April when Alex won but he only finished 12th. "I was sad when he won the race in Jerez," he said. "Let's see in Catalunya if we can repeat that but hopefully we swap positions and Alex wins." Marc Marquez (R) celebrates alongside 2nd place Alex Marquez. — Reuters CONFIDENCE A podium finish put a smile back on the face of Marc's Ducati team-mate Bagnaia, who had described Saturday's 12th spot in the sprint as the "toughest of his career." "Today I recovered a lot of confidence and I can go to Mugello in a fortnight with a spring in my step," said Bagnaia. Marc Marquez got a great start leading Alex, but the other front row sitter Franco Morbidelli fell well back to seventh spot, whilst Bagnaia shot through from the second row to take third spot. Bagnaia turned the pressure on Alex Marquez but after a while he dropped off and was trading third and fourth places with Pedro Acosta over the opening few laps. Indeed the Marquez brothers opened a gap back to Bagnaia, Acosta, Brad Binder and Morbidelli, who had recovered a bit from his sluggish start. By halfway Marc Marquez posted the fastest lap thus far and extended his lead to over two seconds. It was also the moment that South African rider Binder's hopes of recording his best result of a poor campaign were dashed as he slid off. His KTM boss Aki Ajo jumped down from his vantage point and wrung his hands in frustration. The race began to take its toll as 2021 world champion Fabio Quartararo also went off whilst contesting ninth spot. His fellow French rider Johann Zarco's hopes of a third successive podium finish had ended a bit earlier. Whilst up front was becoming a bit of a procession the more exciting tussle was between Morbidelli and rookie Fermin Aldeguer for fifth and sixth spots. Both gave no quarter, rubbing elbows as they vied to get the better of each other and it was Morbidelli who eventually prevailed after a final dig into Aldeguer's ribs on the penultimate lap. — AFP

Alcaraz returns to French Open final after ailing Musetti retires

PARIS: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz reached back-to-back French Open finals after Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti retired with injury while trailing 4-6 7-6(3) 6-0 2-0 on Friday. Alcaraz, who is attempting to become only the third man to retain his Roland Garros title this century after Rafa Nadal and Gustavo Kuerten, will face either world number one Jannik Sinner or 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final. "It's never great to go through like this," Alcaraz said, before hailing Musetti's achievement of reaching at least the semi-finals of all four elite claycourt events this year. "He's a great player, he has had an incredible claycourt season... I wish him a speedy recovery and I'm sure we'll be enjoying his tennis pretty soon." Musetti twice denied Alcaraz the chance to break in the opening nine games before the 23-year-old suddenly dialled up the intensity and snatched the opening set when his Spanish opponent produced errors in a poor service game. A frustrated Alcaraz kicked his bench during the second set but finally found a way through Musetti's dogged defence to draw level after a tiebreak and then produced a dazzling display of power and precision to dish out a bagel in the third set. Musetti, who appeared to be hampered by a left thigh issue midway through the third set, threw in the towel after two games in the fourth. "The first two sets were tough. I had chances to be up in the match but couldn't make the most of them," Alcaraz added. "When I won the second set, I was relieved and I knew that I needed to be aggressive and be myself. I was calmer. I could see clearer and I could play great tennis at the start of the third. "I'm feeling great physically. It's been three intense weeks but I have one more step to take. I'm playing great tennis and I have great confidence. I've been doing great things in this tournament and now is the time to give 100% in the final." Alcaraz said he would tune into the second semi-final on Court Philippe Chatrier to study his potential opponents. "I'm not going to miss tonight's match, it's one of the best we can have right now, Sinner against Djokovic," he said. "I'm going to watch it and enjoy it and take tactics from the match." — Reuters
