Luis Diaz to privately message ex-Everton star who raised major Bayern concerns

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Luis Diaz moved to Bayern Munich after spending three-and-a-half years at Liverpool, and a former Everton star who also played at the Allianz Arena made his feelings clear on the transfer
Luis Diaz plans to reach out to James Rodriguez, following the former Everton player's endorsement of his move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old recently completed a £65.5million transfer to the German giants after spending three-and-a-half years at Anfield.

During his time with the Reds, Diaz clinched a full set of domestic honours that included two EFL Cup, an FA Cup and the Premier League title last season. Now seeking a fresh challenge, he is gearing up for his debut season in Germany, tracing the path of Rodriguez who admits he didn't always enjoy his two-season loan stint in Bavaria between 2017 and 2019.

Rodriguez, now 34 and playing for Club Leon in Mexico, voiced his support for Diaz's decision to swap Merseyside for Munich. And Diaz, who is only the third Colombian to play for Bayern, following Rodriguez and Adolfo Valencia, said that he will reach out to his more senior compatriot.

"About James, I haven't spoken much with him," Diaz told local German media. "Maybe I'll write to him to see what advice he has for me about the city, the team and everything else. But so far I haven't had the chance to talk to him."
Rodriguez is confident Diaz will impress in the Bundesliga and help continue their dominance of German football. Speaking to LaBolaSports after his team's 2-0 defeat to New York City FC in the Leagues Cup, he said: "I think Lucho made the right choice. Bayern signed a great player, and Lucho is made for big teams. It's a great club, and he'll help them a lot."
Rodriguez's loan spell at Bayern did deliver three major trophies, including two Bundesliga crowns, but he confessed he was never settled at the club owing to struggles with the language and the harsh climate.
"First, the cold," he said on Daniel Habif's podcast in 2020. "Then, they are very cold people, although I received spectacular treatment at the club, they liked me a lot. Living there is not easy; it's very cold, -20 degrees. There were days when I would go to work at 9am, start up the car, and it would be -28 degrees.
"I'd say, 'What am I doing here? What am I doing here with -28 degrees?' Munich is a city with a very high quality of life, but I couldn't feel comfortable... the (German) language was very hard for me; I didn't have any desire to learn it.

"I told my (German) teacher in those first four months, 'Look, I'm not going to waste your time and I'm not going to waste mine. I don't want to, I don't want to, I don't want to. I don't want a language that doesn't make me want to learn it; I just didn't want to.'"
James returned to Madrid in 2019 but only made a mere 14 appearances in what turned out to be his final season in Spain, where he won eight honours, including two La Liga titles and two Champions League titles.
The chance to reunite with Carlo Ancelotti led the Colombian to sign for Everton, albeit for just one season, before he left for the Qatar Stars League with Al-Rayyan.

Arne Slot confirms Liverpool have their Mo Salah replacement after completing transfer

Liverpool signed Jeremie Frimpong to step into the void left by the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Liverpool boss Arne Slot sees him being able to fill in for another Anfield talisman Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has revealed there are numerous reasons why the Reds signed Jeremie Frimpong - and one of them is to replace Mohamed Salah during Africa Cup of Nations. ‌ The Reds landed Jeremie Frimpong for £29m from Bayer Leverkusen after the departure of right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Many believe the Dutch utility man is to challenge Conor Bradley for the full-back role but Slot believes he has more versatility. ‌ That will help when Egypt star Salah heads to Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations which runs from December 21 to January 18 and could see him miss up to six Premier League games. Slot said: 'We definitely thought about that and brought in Jeremie Frimpong because he can play as a right-back but also as a right winger. ‌ "We thought about how we can miss Mo for a maximum six games, that's quite a lot. Signing Jeremie Frimpong was for multiple reasons but one was that he could replace Mo if he was not there.' Liverpool have spent big this summer with almost £300m gone on transfers but £150m brought in on sales. Yet it was teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha who starred in pre-season and there's excitement building if he can play a role in the first-team ahead of this weekend's Community Shield. 'You never know how an individual handles the situation,' added Slot. 'A year ago, Trey Nyoni scored a goal against Sevilla when he was also 17, very young. 'They have an incredible chance to work and be around players like Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah and all these incredible players every day and see what they do to be ready to perform every three days. 'This is a step these players definitely have to make, which is completely normal at 16 or 17. It is already nice if they can play well once a week at a good level. 'We try to develop them in the best way we can but also have to develop them because new players that are 24, 23, 22 have already experienced the intensity levels are quite high either during training or during the games, let alone for players who are 16 and coming through the academy. 'We are aware of that but it's been a promising start for him and Trey Nyoni because Trey also played a very good game at Anfield four days ago.'

A good challenge for us to start the season with."Slot said they aren't drawing too much on experience from the Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle but "on Sunday, one goal is worth a lot".On Darwin Nunez agreeing a deal with Al-Hilal: "Darwin might leave, indeed, but things aren't signed yet. Paul Scholes tells Manchester United star to change position

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has to change position to prolong his Premier League career. Shaw was once rated as one of the best left-backs in the world but his stock has fallen over the past few seasons, largely due to injury issues. In his prime Shaw was not only one of the best full-backs in the Premier League but an England regular who scored in the Euro 2020 final. But reoccurring injury issues limited Shaw to just 12 Premier League appearances during the 2023-24 campaign and only seven last season. At times Shaw has been used as a left-sided centre-back and Scholes believes he needs to permanently move into a central position to extend his Manchester United career. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. In a recent interview, Shaw said United were benefitting from the absence of any 'stragglers' in the squad. Responding to Shaw's comments, Scholes said on The Overlap: 'Who do you think Luke Shaw was aiming the stragglers comment at? 'He hasn't played a game for two years, has he? When he's fit, he is one of the very best.' When it was suggested that Shaw will likely play as a left-sided centre-back going forward and move away from the left-back position, Scholes responded: 'He has to, there's no way he can get up and down the pitch anymore.' Shaw's comment was seen as a dig at Manchester United outcasts Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. 'I think Ruben Amorim's mentality and demands [show he's the right man for Manchester United]. He's extremely tough on the group. 'He leaves no stone unturned and I think there are no stragglers in this group anymore. I think everyone has to put the team first. He's made that very clear. 'I think he's picking players on how he feels will be best for the team and that's his choice. As players, we're fully behind him and fully behind on his ideas and what he wants to implement in this team. 'We feel like a real team, especially this pre-season. Since I've been back, the group is so together and I think that's something that we need to keep to make us more of a family and everyone all together and we're all driving in the same direction.' Rashford has left Old Trafford to join Barcelona on loan while Sancho, Antony and Garnacho have all been put up for sale. Manchester United have bolstered Ruben Amorim's squad with two signings so far this summer – Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo joining from Wolves and Brentford respectively. The Red Devils have also agreed a £74m deal to sign Newcastle United target Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. Discussing United's squad ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal next weekend, Scholes said: 'There's still big gaps in the team. 'It feels promising with those two signings but there's still gaps elsewhere. They need legs, quality and control in midfield and you look at the goalkeeper as well. 'You can't fix the situation in one transfer window but they've made a start.' More Trending Asked where he expects Manchester United to finish next season, Scholes added: 'It's a tricky one isn't it because we saw how bad they were last season. 'Although it's looking better there are still issues with the team. We don't want to go through a season like that again. 'Maybe if they can get top-six that would be acceptable. There's too many good teams above them with Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle… there's a lot of competition now to get in that top-six. 'Last season was unacceptable but I think Ruben Amorim will get time and they've made a start with the summer signings.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
