Sabah approves 723MW in energy projects
Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Energy Council (MTS) has approved 723MW of energy projects to meet the state's medium-term electricity needs, including 360MW from gas-fired plants in Kimanis and Tawau, and 363MW from hydro and wind sources. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who chaired the meeting, stressed the need for balanced, cost-conscious decisions aligned with economic and industrial growth. He noted that earlier fast-track projects helped raise the power reserve margin from 10pc in January 2023 to 17pc currently, with a target of 30pc by year-end. Power outages have also reduced, with the system average interruption duration index dropping from 363 minutes (H1 2023) to 162 minutes (H1 2025). Over 60,000 union members in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 4): A total of 60,764 workers in Sabah are members of registered trade unions, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said that the figure includes 22,317 employees from the government sector, 35,194 from the private sector, and 3,253 workers from statutory bodies. He added that there are currently 92 registered trade unions in Sabah, overseen by the Sabah Trade Union Affairs Department. These include 23 unions from the government sector, 52 from the private sector, and 16 representing statutory bodies. 'Sabah recorded a workforce of over 1.7 million people last year, and their collective contribution has driven the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) up to RM84.3 billion,' he said. 'This growth has significantly boosted GDP, particularly in critical sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, and services,' he added, in his speech at the Sabah state-level Labour Day celebration, held here today. Also present at the event were Human Resources Minister, Steven Sim; Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) president, Datuk Dr Adnan Mat; and Trade Union Affairs Department (JHEKS) director-general, Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab. Hajiji said that, in line with the era of globalisation and rapid technological advancement, he urged trade unions in the state to be more proactive in safeguarding the welfare of their members, through initiatives and programmes implemented at both federal and state levels. 'The role of trade unions is crucial as a key pillar in upholding social justice, and ensuring that every worker receives not only fair wages, but also access to skills development, workplace safety and health, comprehensive social security, and a conducive and prosperous working environment. He added that the Sabah government welcomes trade unions as strategic partners, and remains committed to empowering the workforce, supporting the trade union movement, and safeguarding workers' welfare. 'I believe Sabah can be a model state in Malaysia, in building an employment ecosystem which not only drives economic strength, but also consistently upholds the rights of workers,' he said. He also advised union leaders in Sabah who will be participating in the National-Level Trade Union Assembly in Penang on September 6 to use the opportunity to bring the voices of Sabah's workers to the national stage.

Sabah opens first One Stop Labour Centre

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's first One Stop Labour Centre has been launched on Monday to streamline access to employment and labour-related services. Located at Sutera Avenue, the centre was officiated by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim and brings together 14 key agencies under one roof. These include the Department of Labour, Department of Industrial Relations, Department of Skills Development, Socso, Niosh, and HRD Corp. Steven said the centre is part of the ministry's No Wrong Door Policy, aiming to simplify public access to services and reduce the need for multiple office visits. Mindset change needed for 13MP to succeed, says Rafizi
KUALA LUMPUR: Former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli (PH-Pandan) says a change in attitude and approach is needed to ensure successful implementation of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). He said good initiatives under the 13MP should be continued and improved upon, regardless of which administration started them. 'If the government, or even the ministers, were changed, usually plans that were previously agreed upon would be discarded, and the government would spend (more) to create something new. 'This practice needs to stop. If the plan is good and its target is good, it should be maintained and improved upon by the (next) government,' he said when debating 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 4). ALSO READ: All 13MP projects will be monitored regularly to avoid delays He also said the prevalent mindset of rejecting ideas simply because they did not originate from one's own political faction is a significant issue that must be addressed. This attitude, which often results in good ideas being sidelined despite their potential benefits and the resources already invested, is widespread within the system, he added. 'It's prevalent in our system. The idea might be good, but the attitude is such that even though it has gone through the proper process, just because the suggestion didn't come from 'us', we don't support it. ALSO READ: Opposition moots cross-party committee to draw up effective 13MP strategies 'Even if it isn't completely discarded, it's shelved while other things are pursued, although the government has already spent money,' he said. He also said the attitude that undermines efforts under the plan is another thing that should be eradicated. 'In meetings, there is often unanimous agreement, with everyone expressing approval when a policy decision is reached. 'However, when it's time to implement it, various conflicting opinions arise. "People start saying it can't be done in this way or that way, despite the initial consensus that it should proceed,' he said. ALSO READ: Proper execution key for 13MP's success He added that this would hamper progress and result in failure to achieve the goals that have been set. He also pointed out the mismatch between plans and implementation, noting that often the projects implemented do not align with the strategic shifts and plans laid out. 'Under 13MP, all the proposed initiatives are commendable, but when it comes to the plans put forward to translate the annual allocations, they often have no connection to the Plan or the strategic shifts intended. 'Therefore, after five years of the plan, regardless of where we go or what happens, I don't know – the projects involve significant spending but do not translate into the necessary changes,' he said. On July 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tabled the five-year 13MP, which covers the period from 2026 to 2030 and provides a strategic framework for Malaysia's economic, social and environmental priorities. He stated that a total of RM611bil would be required to ensure the success of 13MP, covering the whole nation.
