St. Ubaldo Day highlights faith, family and tradition in Jessup
Jessup may be a small quiet borough, but every year on Memorial Day weekend, it blossoms into a celebration of faith, family and tradition during the St. Ubaldo Festival or 'Festa dei Ceri.'
Saturday was no exception, as the faithful gathered early in the Midvalley borough, for a day of activities culminating in the 'La Corsa dei Ceri,' where participants race through the streets carrying the the 'ceri' or wooden pillars dedicated to one of three saints.
The day opened with a special Mass service and then the throwing of hand-painted vases by the captains of three teams, dedicated to Saint Antonio, Saint Giorgio and Saint Ubaldo.

Participants scrambled to pick pieces of the broken vases, which are believed to provide a year of good luck.
The festivities are Jessup's version of the observance of La Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio, Italy. Italian immigrants brought the tradition of the Corsa dei Ceri, or the running of the saints, from Gubbio to Jessup in the early 1900s.
Genie Lupini, of Jessup, is more than familiar with the day's activities, having participated for over 60 years.
Lupini, of the Jessup 21st Century Association, even travelled to Gubbio in 2013, especially for their version of the festival.
She pointed out many Italians attend the Gubbio festival in their country, where it has its roots.
But, in Jessup, she said, everyone of every ethnicity and religion comes out for the celebration, with many even travelling hours for the special event.
And, the tradition has been passed down through the generations, with many young people stepping into the roles their parents previously filled.
The most heart-stopping part of the event, she said, is when the runners make their way down a steep hill during the 'La Corsa dei Ceri' procession.

Travelling for tradition
Gina Pascolini and Terri Yanoski both were recently back from this year's festival in Gubbio.
Pascolini has travelled to Italy for the event four times, always impressed by the solemnity of the event and its continuing sense of tradition.
It's was Yanoski's first time making the trip overseas for the event. She was overwhelmed with the sheer number of people attending the event, numbering in the tens-of-thousands.
Pascolini, Valley View High School choral director, was especially proud of the school's band, which comes out annually to provide a musical backdrop for the event's festivities.
Music is also a very important part of Gubbio's event, she said.
Band director Ryan Berry said band members really enjoy the opportunity to participate in the day's activities, reflecting the event's appeal to every generation.

The series is tense, beautiful, and quietly devastating. And befitting its subject, the cinematography here is as intoxicating as an aged Bourdeaux. This dreamy adaptation of Min Jin Lee's award-winning novel is, without question, one of the most extraordinary things I've ever seen on television. It begins in Japanese-occupied Korea and follows Sunja, a young woman whose decisions echo across generations, as her family migrates to Japan and struggles to carve out a life amid war, discrimination, and dislocation. The title refers to the Japanese gambling game — one the family eventually turns into a livelihood — but it's also a haunting metaphor for the randomness of life, the slim odds of success, and the quiet resilience of those determined to endure. Here again, this is an Apple TV+ show that's on par with cinema. The visuals, the acting, and the storytelling in Pachinko are each breathtaking in their own right. Watching the show, dare I say, might even change you, not unlike the way traveling outside one's home country for the first time makes a profound impression on you. This next one broke the internet just a few months ago, with its jaw-dropping and supremely addictive second season. The premise behind Severance sounds simple: What if you could split your work and personal memories into two separate lives? The execution ended up being a masterclass in slow-burn tension, eerie world-building, and existential dread. Severance is actually so good, it's now the most-watched Apple TV+ series of all time, according to the streamer, and I envy anyone discovering this puzzle box for the very first time. It's rare for a spy thriller to be both razor-sharp and grimy, but Slow Horses pulls off that quirky balancing act thanks in large part to Gary Oldman's glorious mess of a lead performance. The show also pulls off a neat trick — it turns the espionage genre on its head by focusing on a team of MI5 outcasts rather than more competent secret agents with movie star good looks. The resulting story somehow makes these characters' loser status feel both hilarious and heroic. This is basically espionage with a hangover. It's messy and unpredictable. In a genre obsessed with perfection, Slow Horses makes failure look like a superpower. From its opening moments, Tehran grabs you and doesn't let go. This tightly-wound espionage thriller follows Tamar, a Mossad hacker sent undercover in Iran's capital, where one wrong move could mean the end — not just for her mission, but for her life. What makes the show stand out isn't just the cat-and-mouse plotting, but the emotional depth running beneath every decision Tamar makes. It's a story about identity, loyalty, and the psychological cost of living a lie. The upcoming third season has me especially excited — not just because Tehran raised its game significantly in Season 2, but also thanks to the arrival of Hugh Laurie, who joins the cast as a nuclear plant supervisor. When spy thrillers are done right, avoiding tired tropes and leaning into sharp writing and believable tradecraft, they're among my favorite kinds of shows to stream. And Tehran delivers so strongly, fans of The Bureau and The Americans will feel right at home here. With a lead actress who commands every scene and a constant undercurrent of tension, double-crosses, and moral ambiguity, Tehran stays a step ahead at every turn. ‘Ballerina' Losing Opening Weekend Box Office Match To ‘Lilo & Stitch'

Lilo & Stitch, of course, had a blockbuster opening over the four-day Memorial Day weekend box office from May 23-26 and fended off Karate Kid: Legends to hold on to its box office crown in its second-weekend frame from May 30-June 1. This weekend, Disney's live-action adaptation of the 2002 animated classic is continuing its domestic box office dominance against Ballerina, which is a prequel movie set during the events of 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Deadline is projecting that Lilo & Stitch is on track to earn $32 million to $34 million from 4,185 theaters through Sunday, while forecasting a $26 million to $30 million No. 2 debut for Ballerina, which is opening in 3,409 venues. Deadline's estimate for Ballerina falls within the range of a mid-week projection by Variety, which pegged a $28 million to $30 million opening frame, but comes up short of Box Office Pro's opening weekend forecast of $32 million to $40 million. Ballerina had a $90 million production budget with a prints and advertising budget of $45 million, Deadline reported. Although the character of John Wick is part of the film's formal title, Keanu Reeves plays a supporting role in Ballerina, in which Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick all reprise their roles from the John Wick franchise.
