Alleged tire thief arrested after leading Southfield police on chase
On July 1, Southfield police received a call around 3:30 a.m. from a woman who reported seeing two men stealing tires off a Ford F-150 parked in an apartment complex lot near 11 Mile and Franklin Road.
The woman said the two suspects drove south in a rented Chrysler Pacifica, which police determined was due back on July 5.
"They're disgusted with individuals who have the audacity at three o'clock in the morning to steal parts from a car where somebody worked very hard for their property," said Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren
Barren said officers spotted the minivan driving down Telegraph Road near 10 Mile and began to chase it. Soon after, one of the stolen tires was thrown on the road.
"It was their intent to discard the evidence as they were fleeing from our officers," said Barren.
During the chase, caught on both dash and body camera, the suspects drove the Pacifica for several feet before heading the wrong way on the road and crashing into a police car head-on.
"The airbags deployed in our vehicles received extensive front-end damage," said Barren.
The two Southfield officers hit, a 35-year-old and a 24-year-old, suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the minivan, later identified as 31-year-old Trachawn McCaa, then ran off and jumped into a nearby pond.
After trying to swim away, he was soon taken into custody.
Police also arrested a second person, 51-year-old Prince Madison, who was found in the car as well.
"We are very thankful that this agency took these crimes very seriously, and that we do pursue individuals responsibly who are involved in crimes," said Barren.
Police say McCaa and Madison both have extensive felony records.
McCaa and Madison were charged with larceny from a motor vehicle, while McCaa also faces charges of third-degree fleeing and eluding.
With bail set at $50,000 and $5,000, respectively, both men will be required to wear a GPS tether while out on bond.

Gambling machines, cash, vehicles seized in Macomb County investigation
Four people were arrested and multiple gambling machines seized during an investigation over illegal gambling activity in Macomb County, Michigan. The Macomb County Sheriff's Enforcement Team served multiple search warrants as part of the investigation, the sheriff's office reported. Search warrants were served Aug. 11 at a business in Macomb Township, a home in Sterling Heights and a home in Clinton Township. Two people, Mirela Deda, 53, of Sterling Heights, and Alban Hulaj, 33, of Clinton Township, were taken into custody without incident that date, the report said. There were also five gambling machines, one vehicle and a total of $5,112 in cash seized by officers. Deda and Hulaj both face felony charges of gambling operations as well as conspiracy, and Deda is also charged with running a gambling house for gain, a high misdemeanor. Bond for both has been set at $10,000. Then also as part of this investigation, the Sheriff's Enforcement Team served search warrants Aug. 12 at a business in Macomb Township and a home in Washington Township. Two people, Alban Preka, 43, of Washington Township, and Trifon Mone, 57, of Sterling Heights, were taken into custody without incident on that date. Officers seized five gambling machines, two vehicles and a total $12,038 in cash. Preka and Mone both face four charges, including felony gambling operations and conspiracy, along with two other misdemeanors. They, too, had bail set for $10,000 each.

Detroit man sentenced to 25-50 years in death of 1-year-old girl
A Detroit man has been sentenced to up to 50 years in prison over the death of a 1-year-old girl in 2022, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office reported. LeRoy Metoyer III was sentenced Monday by Judge Wanda Evans to 25 to 50 years in prison on a conviction of second-degree murder, and 15 to 30 years in prison on a conviction of first-degree child abuse, prosecutor Kym Worthy announced. The sentences will run concurrently through the Michigan Department of Corrections. The charges are in connection with the death of Justice Starks on Nov. 29, 2022. Metoyer was caring for the young child of a friend when the toddler was assaulted, the prosecutor's report said. Medics were called to the scene and took the child to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Dec. 1, 2022. The Wayne County Medical Examiner's office later determined the cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma to the head. Charges against Metoyer were filed in March 2023.

Maine police officer arrested by ICE agrees to voluntarily leave the country
OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine (AP) — A Maine police officer arrested by immigration authorities has agreed to voluntarily leave the country, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Monday. ICE arrested Old Orchard Beach Police Department reserve Officer Jon Luke Evans, of Jamaica, on July 25, as part of the agency's effort to step up immigration enforcement. Officials with the town and police department have said federal authorities previously told them Evans was legally authorized to work in the U.S. An ICE representative reached by telephone told The Associated Press on Monday that a judge has granted voluntary departure for Evans and that he could leave as soon as that day. The representative did not provide other details about Evans' case. Evans' arrest touched off a dispute between Old Orchard Beach officials and ICE. Police Chief Elise Chard has said the department was notified by federal officials that Evans was legally permitted to work in the country, and that the town submitted information via the Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify program prior to Evans' employment. Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin then accused the town of 'reckless reliance' on the department's E-Verify program. E-Verify is an online system that allows employers to check if potential employees can work legally in the U.S. Officials with Old Orchard Beach did not immediately respond to a request for comment. ICE's detainee lookup website said Monday that Evans was being held at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island. However, a representative for Wyatt said Evans had been transferred to an ICE facility in Burlington, Massachusetts. ICE officials did not respond to requests for comment on the discrepancy. It was unclear if Evans was represented by an attorney, and a message left for him at the detention facility was not returned. ICE officials said in July that Evans overstayed his visa and unlawfully attempted to purchase a firearm. WMTW-TV reported Monday that Evans' agreement to a voluntary departure means he will be allowed to leave the U.S. at his own expense to avoid being deported.
