Tour operators meet J&K CM, discuss ways to promote tourism
A delegation from the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to discuss the revival of tourism in the State, which has been affected following the Pahalgam terror attacks.
The 30-member delegation was led by Ravi Gosain, President of IATO.
Mr. Abdullah assured the delegation of the safety and security of the tourists and urged them to spread the word that Kashmir was safe to travel to. Also present at the meeting were Yasha Mudgal, Commissioner-cum-Secretary Tourism Department and Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Director Tourism – Kashmir, the IATO said in a statement.
The delegation met the CM as part of three-day 'Rubaroo Jammu and Kashmir' campaign by the IATO.
'It was important to assess the ground situation and during our three-day tour, we found the State as safe as any other place. Besides, we have assurances from the highest echelons of the government and that gives us all huge confidence and I am sure tourist flow to the State would be back to normal in times to come,' Mr. Gosain said.
The IATO had earlier said that there was nearly 40% cancellations of tours following the Pahalgam incident.
'Obviously the sentiment was hit, but it is important to restore confidence and revive tourism. The visit is a step in this direction and we are completely satisfied with safety arrangements made by the government', Mr. Gosain added.
The IATO is the national body of the tourism industry. It has over 1600 members covering all segments of Tourism Industry. It was established in 1982.

On Feb 10-11, 2020, envoys from 25 countries, mostly from the European Union, visited Srinagar. The third such visit took place in Feb 2021, when a large number of European diplomats visited Kashmir, and met journalists and elected DDC representatives. India stands ‘isolated' over abstention on Gaza ceasefire in the UNGA, says Congress
Expressing concern over the flare-up in West Asia after the escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict, the Congress on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) urged the Union Government to work with partner countries to ensure an immediate ceasefire in the region. 'India should work with partners to bring an immediate halt to hostilities as any escalation can destabilise the entire region,' Congress Working Committee member Anand Sharma, who heads the party's foreign affairs department, told The Hindu. Mr. Sharma, who was part of the Narendra Modi government's diplomatic outreach in Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack, mounted a scathing criticism of India's abstention from a UN vote on a motion for the protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations in Gaza. 'It is a humanitarian catastrophe that has unfolded in Gaza, where people are facing collective retribution for their identity. It is indefensible that the land of Mahatma Gandhi doesn't stand for peace,' Mr. Sharma said. In fact, the abstention at the UN was cited as yet another example of 'weak diplomacy' by India. Congress general secretary (organisation) and Lok Sabha member from Kerala's Alappuzha seat, K.C. Venugopal, said India stood isolated among multilateral fora such as BRICS — a grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — and SCO or Shanghai Cooperation Organisation because of its stance. 'India has always stood for peace, justice, and human dignity.
