Billy Joel opens up about brain disorder diagnosis: ‘My balance sucks'

Billy Joel is offering fans a sense of reassurance after canceling his tour earlier this year due to a brain disorder diagnosis. In a candid interview with Bill Maher on the ' Club Random' podcast released Monday, July 21, the 76-year-old musician spoke openly for the first time about his health. 'My balance sucks,' he said. 'It's like being on a boat.' In May, Joel revealed he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder caused by excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. It's often misdiagnosed as dementia, can cause problems with gait, memory and bladder control. The condition is sometimes reversible, though recovery varies by case, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The Grammy-winning singer emphasized that while normal pressure hydrocephalus is not yet 'fixed,' it is 'being worked on.' His representatives previously stated that the disorder had been worsened by recent performances, leading to issues with vision, hearing and balance. As a result, Joel canceled 17 shows across North America and Europe, including an October date at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara with Stevie Nicks. 'They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling,' Joel told Maher, adding that he initially believed his symptoms stemmed from his past drinking habits. 'I feel fine.' Joel last performed in February at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, where he fell onstage but completed the concert. He had hoped to resume touring in July, but no return date has been confirmed. In the meantime, fans can catch a deeper look at the artist's life in the new HBO documentary ' Billy Joel: And So It Goes,' which debuted Friday, July 18. Part two airs Friday, July 25. The series is also available to stream on HBO Max.

Wolverine And Jack Reacher Are Made For Male Gaze

Earlier this year, British singer Olly Murs sparked some serious online discourse when before-and-after photos from his '12-week gym transformation' went viral on social media. It all started when an X user ran an online poll to ask men and women which photo they preferred. With just under 5,000 people voting, another X user was left in disbelief when they noticed that most women said that they preferred Olly's body in the before photo. Sharing a screenshot of the poll result alongside the original photos, the second X user wrote: 'why are women lying about this? like what's the actual cause?' and before long, men and women were embroiled in a passionate debate. And one of the most popular quote-tweets from a woman ultimately summed up the discourse, reading: 'We're not lying. Men cater to the male gaze more often than they realize.' But it seems as though men have learned absolutely nothing from this viral moment, with the same conversation erupting on X again just last week. This time, it stemmed from a right-wing X account sharing photos of Hugh Jackman and Alan Ritchson in character as muscular Wolverine and Jack Reacher respectively. The user wrote: 'Notice how no one, not a single soul, has ever complained about the female gaze in entertainment.' Rage-bait or not, this tweet undeniably struck a chord, and it has been seen more than 41 million times since it was posted on at the time of writing, tens of thousands of people have shared their response in the replies and quote-tweets, arguing both for and against its original message. Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming consensus was that, once again, these hench male action heroes with bulging muscles are actually catered to other men. 'both photos represent a perfect example of entertainment catering to the MALE gaze,' a viral quote tweet reads. 'did straight men learn nothing from the recent before and after gym photos of that british singer?' Somebody else shared a photo of the stripper characters in Magic Mike, led by Channing Tatum, writing: 'That's not shot for women. This is shot for women. See the difference?' For reference, while the Magic Mike cast are toned and muscular, their bodies are nowhere near the level of Wolverine and Reacher.'LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER. the female gaze is actually this,' another wrote alongside a gif of Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy in the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. 'I'm going to hold your hand while I tell you this…. But the male power fantasy you're showing isn't the female gaze…. The female gaze is less about muscles for show (that aren't even functional, they're severely dehydrated for that effect) and more about EVERYTHING ELSE,' one more viral tweet one more concluded: 'Not that women hate muscular men but this kind of ripped look mostly caters to male audiences. The biggest admirers of gym bros are other gym bros." Perhaps expectedly, men have continued to argue in the replies of all of the viral rebuttals — proving that there is simply no getting through to some people. 'Ted Lasso' Season 4 first look revealed as filming begins in Kansas City

Ready to "believe" again? Apple TV+ has released a first look photo from the upcoming fourth season of "Ted Lasso," which has officially started production in Kansas City. Filming is also set to take place in London, the streamer said. The photo shows Jason Sudeikis' titular soccer coach seated at a restaurant alongside his old colleagues Leslie Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) and Keeley Jones (Juno Temple). Brett Goldstein's Roy Kent and Brendan Hunt's Coach Beard aren't pictured in the image, but both characters are also returning for the new episodes, Apple has confirmed. Goldstein and Hunt are also producers on the new season. Several supporting characters from the first three seasons of "Lasso," including Nick Mohammed's Nate and Phil Dunster's Jamie Tartt, have not been announced as part of the Season 4 cast. The glimpse at Season 4 comes more than two years after the Emmy-winning soccer comedy aired what appeared to be its final episode in May 2023. The show's first three seasons followed college football coach Ted as he is recruited from Kansas to coach a British soccer team, AFC Richmond. By the end of Season 3, Ted said goodbye to the team and moved back home to the U.S. to be with his son, Henry (Gus Turner). Sudeikis and his fellow "Lasso" producers had said in interviews that a three-season arc was planned from the start of the series. But despite the finality of the Season 3 finale, which also tied up many stories for the supporting characters, Apple never explicitly confirmed that it was the end of "Lasso." After years of fan and media speculation that the show could continue in some form, a fourth season was officially announced in March of this year. 'Ted Lasso' fans can believe it: The show is back for a Season 4, with Ted coaching women In Season 4, "Ted returns to Richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women's football team," Apple's plot synopsis says, using the British word for soccer. "Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would." Sudeikis teased in a March statement that "as we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to 'look before we leap," in Season 4 "the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it's exactly where they're meant to be." Speaking to USA TODAY in April, Goldstein said he "cried and we had such an emotional goodbye" at the end of Season 3 of "Lasso," but "I do think a part of me thought this wasn't the end." Brett Goldstein on 'wonderful' 'Ted Lasso' revival and his first HBO stand-up special "I just felt like it's such a lovely world," he added. "It sort of felt like surely there'll be a way to do more." Newcomers to the cast in Season 4 include Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsey, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, and Abbie Hern. Grant Feely will take over the role of Ted's son, Henry.
