‘Saturday Night Live' Cast and Crew Describe the ‘Weird Dance' It Takes to Make Each Show Happen
Take the viral 'Maybelline' sketch for example, with a trio of performers including host Ariana Grande doing their best Jennifer Coolidge impression. During a USG University Panel featuring Hair Department Head Jodi Mancuso, Makeup Department Head Louie Zakarian, and cast member Chloe Fineman (who is in the sketch,) 'Saturday Night Live' director Liz Patrick revealed that there was supposed to be a fourth Jennifer Coolidge in the scene. 'Sarah [Sherman] was in there also,' she said, describing the first draft of 'Maybelline' she'd read. 'I was like, 'Oh my god. How are we gonna do four people?' But I was open and ready for the challenge.'

Amy Poehler Admits 'I Misappropriated' with Certain 'SNL' Sketches: 'We All Played People' We Shouldn't Have
The panelists all agree: Being 'open and ready for the challenge' is the kind of ethos always needed to get the job done for 'SNL,' even if they don't know exactly how yet at a particular moment. 'It's just flying by the seat of your [pants],' said Fineman. 'I was remembering last year I did JoJo Siwa on 'Weekend Update,' and that was so much crazy makeup that we created, and then had an immediate, quick change. So you're putting it on, and then you're fully washing your face, and then fully putting the new thing on. And then we did the same thing … You can't even think about it. You're just going, and it is like this weird dance that we all just do because everyone's so expert and truly at the top of their game. It's beautiful.'
Building off of that example that Fineman laid out, makeup designer Zakarian explains, 'We can't use makeups that are going to stay on and take too long to take off. So everything has to be planned out for 'Ok, we need to be able to do it as fast as [it] possibly can be done, because we never know what's going to happen from dress to air.' He adds, 'You find out that, 'Oh, I had 10 minutes here, now I've only got five minutes to do that same thing that took us 10 minutes to get into' is a big, big challenge.'
For hair and wig designer Mancuso, a memorable battle that she had against the clock working on Season 50 was when she got a call at 1:00am the day before the show that Mikey Day's character in the cold open had been replaced by Devon Walker playing country star Shaboozey, meaning they were now in need of an intricate wig to match the 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' singer's unique dread pattern. 'I was like, 'Oh my god, man, this beautiful man's big dreads. How am I doing this?' And for the first time, I said to one of our writers, Bryan Tucker, 'I don't know if I can do this,'' she said. 'And he came to my room and he was like, 'Do I have to cut this?' And who wants to be that person? 'The wig department can't figure it out.' And we pulled it off, and it was so beautiful. And of course, it got cut, but we made it happen!'

Bob Odenkirk thinks he was 'too hard' on 'SNL' as young writer: 'This show could be better'
The "Nobody 2" star also tells EW he "would love that opportunity" when asked if there's a chance he'll host the season 51 premiere. Bob Odenkirk has found new respect for Saturday Night Live after leaving the show. While discussing Nobody 2 at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, the actor tells Entertainment Weekly that he has gained a better perspective on SNL in the years since he finished his tenure as a writer, which lasted from 1987 to 1991. Although he's previously said that he had a less-than-stellar view of SNL while he worked there, he now realizes that he judged the show too harshly. "I was too hard on the show," he says. "I had a lot of attitude when I got hired there, like, 'This show could be better, this show could be Monty Python, this should be more cutting edge, this should be more dangerous.' And I was frustrated by it not representing purely my point of view. I wanted it to be me, my show." Odenkirk now understands that his desire to personally transform the entire voice of SNL was foolhardy. "It's not my show! It's a show that is shared by everyone who's in that cast, and everyone who's in that writing staff, and it's shared by generations, and not one generation," he says. He continues, "Everybody in America watches it, and it's a reference point for everyone. I think the 50th just made me more aware [than] ever of the amazing work that's been done there." The Better Call Saul star also thinks that he got to write boundary-pushing comedy on a later project. "I think Mr. Show, the show I did with David Cross, I consider my effort to do something edgy and new and try to blast through some barriers and go to another level," he says. Odenkirk also admits that he didn't fully appreciate how SNL's lightning-fast weekly schedule makes its production so difficult. "It's a bigger challenge than I thought it was when I worked there," he explains. "When I worked there I was 25, I was like, 'C'mon, dammit! We can do better! This is easy!' And it literally was the years since I've left that I went, 'Wait a second, that show is almost impossible to do at all.'" Additionally, when asked if he'd consider hosting the show during its upcoming 51st season, Odenkirk responds strongly in the affirmative. "I would love that opportunity," he says. "I have mad respect for the effort of that show, and I would dream of being able to host."Though he's never hosted the show before, Odenkirk says that it remains within the realm of possibility. "There's been conversation about it," he explains. "They don't have me locked out. I'm friends with everybody there, and I know so many of the writers, and I know so many of the actors. It's just part of my life." Watch EW's full livestream of Friday's Comic-Con interviews above. Check out more of . Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly Solve the daily Crossword

Billy Joel speaks out about rumors he's had DUIs in new documentary
The Piano Man is defending his reputation. In the newly released second part of the HBO documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes,' the 76-year-old music icon responded to the longstanding rumor that he's gotten multiple DUIs over the years. 'You know, along with fame comes a lot of gossip, rumors. I didn't like the tabloid kind of press,' Joel said in the doc. 'For example, there's this rumor that I have all these DUIs. That never happened, but people keep repeating the myth: 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.'' Advertisement 6 Billy Joel performs at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in Nov. 2024. Getty Images The 'Uptown Girl' singer suffered another accident in April 2004 when he crashed into a house in Long Island. The rumors about Joel led to 'Saturday Night Live' referencing his alleged drunk driving in a 2004 sketch that featured Horatio Sanz, who played the singer, chugging a bottle of pineapple schnapps and crashing into several walls and mailboxes while driving a group of girls to a party. However, Joel has repeatedly denied that he's ever gotten a DUI. Advertisement 6 Billy Joel performs in Melbourne, Australia in Dec. 2022. 'But people made a connection, like, 'Oh, he went there because he was in a car accident from drinking.' No.' 'I never had a DUI in my life,' he stated. 'That's another fallacy.
