SOLD: Sale of SuperSport United confirmed

The South African11 hours ago
SuperSport United have officially been sold to Siwelele Football Club and are waiting for the PSL to approve the deal.
This was confirmed in a statement by SuperSport International on Thursday, which added that after a closed bidding process, Siwelele were awarded the rights to purchase the Tshwane side.
'SuperSport International would like to confirm the sale of its Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, SuperSport United, to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd.
'Following a closed bidding process, Siwelele F.C was awarded the rights to purchase the three-time Premiership winners, pending approval by the PSL Executive Committee.
'The sale of the club comes as SuperSport makes strategic shifts to allow us to remain the biggest broadcaster in Africa and a leading global competitor. Shifts in the market, as well as the need to innovate in accordance with our core business, have necessitated focused direction to allow SuperSport to remain the best sports content provider on the continent and a leader in broadcast innovation,''' said SuperSport CEO, Rendani Ramovha.
Siwelele chairman Calvin le John said they are happy to have won the bid to purchase the club.
'As Siwelele FC, we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL. SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon, should we get the final vote of approval from the PSL executive committee,' Le John said.
'Out of respect for the PSL executive committee's processes, Siwelele F.C, MultiChoice and SuperSport will not be making any further statements pending the decision of the PSL.'
Reports suggest that Matsatsantsa were sold for R50 million and will relocate to Bloemfontein in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season and will be called Siwelele FC.
SuperSport United endured a horror 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, finishing 14th and narrowly avoiding the promotion-relegation playoffs.

Family business? Gayton McKenzie's son buys PSL club

Calvin Le John, the first-born son of Minister of Sport, Art and Culture Gayton McKenzie, is the new owner of PSL club SuperSport United – and South Africans are unsurprised at the 'convenience.' The news was announced by sports broadcaster Robert Marawa on the X platform. The club, which was reportedly sold for R50 million, will change its name to Siwelele FC. Its goal is to revive the glory days of the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtics, which later became Royal AM. In an X post, Robert Marawa broke the news that SuperSport United had been sold to a new owner, Calvin Le John. The deal – which cost R50 million – took place through a closed bidding process. Interestingly, Calvin is the son of Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie and reportedly changed his last name to avoid public scrutiny. Calvin now takes up the post of chairman of the PSL club. He wants to officially rebrand as Siwelele FC and fill a void that the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtics left behind. Calvin Le John said in a statement: 'As Siwelele FC, we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL. SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon, should we get the final vote of approval from the PSL Executive Committee'. Marawa said of the deal – and Calvin's relation to the minister: 'Football holds a special place in his heart. Siwelele FC is not just a club – it's a promise to the people of Bloemfontein. Calvin is not doing this for attention. He's doing it for legacy.' News that SuperSport United's new owner, Calvin Le John, is the son of Gayton McKenzie did not come as much of a surprise to South African football fans. Some have even accused the minister of having a hand in the closed bidding deal. Gayton Mackenzie is the real Mafia!🤣 — YourServant (@ArnoModd) July 3, 2025 According to a profile of the new PSL club owner, Calvin Le John changed his name several years ago in the hopes of also becoming a hotshot businessman like his dad. The eldest son of Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, was entrusted with running the family's extensive business empire in the sectors of mining, transport, hospitality, entertainment, properties, and publishing. Principal of Hilton College - SA's most expensive school - 'scolds' rich parents

The principal of Hilton College – the most expensive private school in South Africa – has issued a directive to parents of the private school not to overtly display their wealth, particularly at rugby school games. The school is located in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Alumni include prominent figures such as sports broadcaster Robert Marawa, former Springbok Gary Teichmann, and uMngeni Local Municipality mayor Chris Pappas. On social media, snippets of an open letter written by Hilton College principal George Harris went viral. In it, the headmaster of the prominent private school shared his feedback to parents of learners following a rugby derby day last month between the school and its rivals, Michael House. While Harris thanked parents for their unwavering support, he also chastised them for overtly displaying their wealth on the day. He wrote: 'I've been reflecting on this and have been noticing growing tendencies toward one-upmanship in the scale of hosting and catering around the field. When hospitality and generosity became self-serving displays of opulence, and began to pull away from what we aspire to be as a community The Hilton College principal added: 'Next year, can we ditch the opulence in favour of a wholesome hospitality devoid of showmanship and loud extravagance. 'When the extravagance stretches into overconsumption, the message we send to our children is wrong'. Hilton College bags the number one spot as South Africa's most expensive private school. Its annual fees for 2025 stand at R420 729, which includes boarding and tuition fees. Here are others from around the country that make the Top 10.
