'Pressure building each game' to hit 12-point mark
Another standard week from Southampton Football Club. Another loss and another collapse to condemn us to our 26th league defeat - a 3-0 humbling at home to Aston Villa.The search for those two more points rolls on to next week. Will we get them under new interim boss Simon Rusk? If the Villa game plan was anything to go by, then it is not looking likely.It was clear from the off on Saturday that Rusk had set his team up to defend at all costs and scrape a 0-0, drawing conclusions that he must get these points by any means necessary. Does that ever work?During Rusk's first stint as interim back in December, he took charge against Fulham at Craven Cottage. The set-up was a carbon copy of last weekend's. Three at the back, a four-man midfield and two strikers, but with relative success. We played out a 0-0, which in the grand scheme of things, turned out to be one of our biggest positives from this whole campaign.Up against Villa, it failed. However, it took the Champions League quarter-finalists 73 minutes to break the deadlock. We did soak up Villa pressure for large portions of the game and faced 25 shots and heavy possession.There is no reason to assume Rusk will switch things up for the remainder of the season and should expect more of the same at West Ham next. For a team that has conceded the most in the division and our lack of goal threat, this may get even worse.If/when we reach that magic 12-point mark, we may see Rusk play a more exciting brand of football. Maybe the likes of newly-debuted Jay Robinson will get more minutes. But it is a very difficult situation for the interim boss. The pressure is building each game, and with Manchester City, Arsenal and a Goodison Park swansong on the agenda, games against West Ham and Leicester may be our last hopes.Find more from Ray Hunt at the In that Number podcast, external

Michail Antonio set for return amid West Ham contract standoff
Michail Antonio hopes to return to action in the next few weeks, six months after the West Ham United forward broke his leg in a car crash. The 35-year-old has earmarked playing for Jamaica in the Concacaf Gold Cup, which takes place from June 14 to July 6 in Canada and the United States. Jamaica will play Guatemala a week on Tuesday followed by Guadeloupe and Panama in Group C. Antonio is keen to play in the tournament to prove that he has returned to fitness and earn a new contract at West Ham. His deal, worth more than £90,000 a week, expires this month and he has rejected the club's offer of a short-term contract, which included a modest basic wage and further money on appearances. He wants more guaranteed money in a longer-term deal. The impasse over the contract might be one reason Antonio took to social media on Sunday to hint he could be leaving. He posted a picture of him clutching the Conference League trophy, won by the club in 2023, and a video charting his recovery from the car crash. His £260,000 grey Ferrari went off the road and hit a tree during Storm Darragh in Epping Forest, Essex, on December 7 after West Ham training. He broke his femur bone in four places and after surgery was discharged from hospital on New Year's Eve. The posted footage begins showing the wreckage of his Ferrari, with a voice asking how he escaped. It then shows him initially shuffling, then walking, using crutches through to the later stages of his rehabilitation, including working with the ball at the club's training ground in Essex. The video is set to inspirational comments from motivational speaker Inky Johnson. 'Faith will overcome all challenges,' Antonio writes in the caption of the video. Antonio said he was '100 per cent sure' he would play again despite the severity of his injury. In May he told L'Equipe: 'The question is whether the club wants to extend my contract. That's my priority, but I'm waiting. Until then, all I can do is focus on my recovery so that, wherever I am next year, I can deliver.'

Benjamin Sesko to Arsenal transfer takes new twist with Chelsea ready to strike
Chelsea have already signed Liam Delap this summer, but the Blues are still pursuing a deal for another striker and that could lead them to gazump Arsenal for Benjamin Sesko Chelsea could rival Arsenal for the signature of Benjamin Sesko this summer, with the Gunners still yet to make up their minds. Sesko is on Arsenal 's shortlist as they look to sign a world-class striker in the summer transfer window, but so is Viktor Gyokeres – and that indecision could cost them. Mikel Arteta 's side know they need to splash the cash to sign a centre-forward this summer, having finished second in the Premier League for three straight seasons and come up short in the semi-finals of the Champions League. They have been monitoring Sesko for some time and came close to signing him last summer – yet their failure to move quickly could come back to bite them. Chelsea have already signed a striker this summer, having beaten Manchester United to the £30million signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich. Yet the Blues might not be done there, with another striker a real possibility. Enzo Maresca's side are currently locked in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund over the signing of winger Jamie Gittens. They have seen an initial offer of €35m (£29.5m) rejected by Dortmund, but are expected to return with an improved bid in the coming days. However, Sky Sports says they are also pondering whether to push for another striker, with Hugo Ekitike and Sesko on their shortlist. As Mirror Football have reported, Chelsea have reached an advanced stage of talks with Eintracht Frankfurt star Ekitike, who could cost £84m (€100m). But Sesko would represent a cheaper alternative, with Mirror Football understanding that the RB Leipzig striker is available for £60m this summer. Arsenal have held discussions with Leipzig and the Slovenian striker's representatives, yet nothing has been agreed. Arsenal already face competition from United for Gyokeres, who previously played under Ruben Amorim at Sporting, and now face fresh competition from Chelsea for Sesko. But Leipzig finished seventh in the Bundesliga to miss out on European football for 2025/26 and the time has come for them to cash in on their star player. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is the man tasked with overseeing their transfer plans this summer. As well as a striker, that includes the £5m signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea to provide back-up to David Raya, and the £51m signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
