Edinburgh fairground apologises and closes after waltzer flew off tracks at high speed
An Edinburgh fairground has closed down and issued an apology after a waltzer came off the tracks and crashed at high speed during a family day out.
On Saturday, May 10, dad-of-three Kevin McNulty and his partner Brooke were with his children, Kayla, 13, Leona, 12, and Codie, 7, at Galactic Carnival in Westside Plaza Wester Hailes, when the terrifying incident occurred.
Panic soon set in while the children were enjoying the waltzer ride, as while the cars spun around at pace, Kevin's kids' car came off the track. The children could be heard screaming in terror in the footage, with the clip ending as the car came to a stop and Kevin raced around to be with his children.
Organisers, Galactic Carnival, have now apologised to the family and announced that their event will be closed while an investigation takes place.
Galactic Carnival Edinburgh over the weekend. First aid attended immediately and was offered to those involved in the incident and no ambulance was required.
"Galactic Carnival sincerely apologises to the families who had to go through this experience, and will be working tirelessly to assist in the ongoing investigation.
"We are truly sorry for the distress caused by the incident at our event. Public safety at our events has always been, and continues to be, our top priority.
"All rides at our events undergo extensive safety testing in line with government guidelines, including daily safety checks, and are also inspected by an independent third party safety inspection body (ADIPS). This incident is now being investigated by third party inspection bodies and the Health and Safety Executive.
"We have decided to close the event to allow for investigation to take place. All tickets purchased for future dates will be refunded automatically through our ticketing agent Skiddle. Once again we are truly sorry for the distress this has caused."
Speaking to the Record, Kevin explained how he was in the car behind with Brooke when the incident happened. He said: "I just noticed the children's car spinning our way, but it didn't stop and just smashed off us and then went flying past.
"I didn't think and just jumped up and off the ride while it was still going at full pelt without even thinking. I ran around towards where the car had landed and thankfully they were alright and hadn't suffered any injuries.
"Even today I am still in complete shock. I feel sick just thinking about it and how bad it could all have gone. We are all just extremely lucky that the children weren't badly hurt."
Posting about the incident initially, Kevin said: 'Last night we were at these shows at Wester Hailes plaza...my three kids were on the waltzers and then the unthinkable happened.
"Going full pelt and not slowing down their car came completely off and then went flying into our car and then smashed about the place crashing into the side off the track.
"Thankfully there was a heavy large speaker that they collided with or they would have been through the whole thing and then the ending would have been a completely different story. I can't stop thinking about it.'
He continued: 'The shows continued to go, but not the waltzers. The place should have been shut down for a full inspection. It was like something you see in the movies and my kids are very, very lucky that they managed to get out of this still walking.'
He asked: 'Any shares or advice on who/how to speak with to take this further would be massively appreciated!'

Strictly Come Dancing's Karen Hauer's 'nasty' confession about ex husband Kevin Clifton
The Strictly Come Dancing professional has now split from her third husband, Jordan Wyn-Jones. Strictly Come Dancing professional Karen Hauer has split from her fitness pro husband, Jordan Wyn-Jones. It comes after the dancer was pictured without her wedding ring last week, just 16 months after the couple married. Jordan is Karen's third husband, with her first being former dance partner Matthew Hauer and her second fellow Strictly dancer Kevin Clifton who has now been with Stacey Dooley for five years. Karen said she was 'blindsided' by how quickly Kevin moved on in 2018, and was left 'struggling to get out of bed'. The star described the break-up with Kevin as the 'toughest period of her life' and praised her rescue dog Betty for helping her through the hard times, reports The Mirror. The pair married in 2015 after meeting on the New York leg of long-running live dance show Burn The Floor in 2011. At the time, Kevin was still with his second wife, ballet dancer Clare Craze, and he had also previously married amateur Latin world champion Anna Melnikova in 2003. According to Kevin, Venezuelan pro dancer Karen was everything he had been looking for. Of that time, he once said: "I wasn't myself - a lot of friends and family were telling me that. It was just a bit of a weird time. When I met Karen, I could get on with her on a completely different level." In 2015, he proposed on stage during a performance of Burn The Floor on Karen's birthday, and they married that same year in London. But looking back, Karen said it might have been too much, too soon, telling Closer magazine: "I don't think we were ready for marriage. We were still growing as performers, as people, as lovers, and sometimes you just can't find the right way to fix things." By 2016, rumours of trouble in paradise were swirling, and Karen recently revealed that their relationship "got really nasty overnight" as she battled with her mounting jealousy. "It's six years down the line and things started going wrong, just little things, like a phone call, like, 'You didn't call me the whole day'", she told The Divorce Club podcast. Of Kevin's reaction to her challenges, she continued: "Sometimes I would get the 'You're not very kind, you're not very nice' and I was like 'What do you mean? I don't understand.' There were little attacks that we would do to each other." But according to Karen, the rot really set in when she clung on tighter to the marriage amid her own sense of insecurity - a move which only caused more rows. She explained: "Then the fights, I was getting jealous, but I was only jealous because I wasn't getting the attention that I wanted from my husband and then I didn't understand why so I started gripping, trying to pull him. 'Why are you not doing this? Why are you not doing that?' Exactly what you're not supposed to do, I just wanted answers. And then it just got really nasty overnight." They tried therapy, but Karen said there was "too much anger and emotional baggage" for it to work. And finally, they woke up one morning, looked at each other and 'knew' it was over. "Eventually we both couldn't take it anymore," she added. Kevin and Karen confirmed their split in early 2018 but continued to work together on Strictly, which understandably made moving on more difficult. Especially as Karen admitted she'd wanted to save their marriage. "I would have never let go of it. I wouldn't have never, never let go of it." She continued. "I would have liked to have fought for it and it took me a year after we separated to actually let go of him. It took me a long time to cut the umbilical cord that I had connected to him. Because it was connected for such a long time and at a completely different level than my first marriage, because this marriage was what I was always looking for." Young Celtic fan parties with BSC Young Boys in Switzerland after sweet viral clip in Glasgow
Footage captured the moment Joshua McLaughlin interacted with BSC Young Boys fans at Celtic Park earlier this year, a special relationship which has continued. A young Celtic fan has partied with BSC Young Boys in Switzerland after footage captured him meeting their fans in Glasgow earlier this year. The viral clip showed eight-year-old Joshua McLaughlin and his dad walking over to applaud the away fans after being blown away by the atmosphere they created at the crunch Champions League game fixture in January. The supporters took Joshua to their hearts and he has now visited Switzerland twice in recent months. Following the game at Celtic Park, Joshua's dad, Kevin, wanted to buy his son a BSC Young Boys jersey but when he contacted the club the pair were invited over for a match. They enjoyed an all expenses paid trip to Switzerland in April, where the Elderslie youngster was asked to be the club mascot for the day as the Swiss outfit played Yverdon Sport FC. Joshua begged his dad to go over again during the school holidays and they were given an unbelievable reception from the locals last weekend. Speaking to the Record, Kevin, 53, explained how his son struck up a close friendship with local lads Jonas Boss and Giuliano Matturro in April and was desperate to go back over for a game this summer. Kevin arranged a trip to take in BSC Young Boy's match against FC Sion on Sunday, August 10. At the match, goalkeeper Marvin Keller and defender Jaouen Hadjam even noticed Joshua and came over and spent some time with him. Kevin said: "I tried to keep it as low key as possible, but the day before the game I posted a picture on Instagram and the club shared it and hundreds of Swiss people started following me. "So many people inside the stadium seemed to recognise us and the attention was so overwhelming. "We went out for dinner that night and the guy who owned the restaurant refused to let us pay for our meal. "It was the same when we visited the country earlier this year, the Swiss fans have just been absolutely amazing throughout and Joshua is stopped all the time and asked for selfies. "It has all been such a whirlwind of emotions and came off the back of the one incident inside Celtic Park." Kevin explained he had never seen such a noisy and colourful away support in all his years following Celtic during the January game. He said from the moment they stepped inside the stadium that night Joshua was completely fascinated. "By that point all of the home fans were away so we must have stood out as we walked over to be near them. "The fans started doing that thing you see in the video where they sort of hum and put out their hands. "Joshua walked over and they let off two huge roars and applauded him. "It was such a special moment for us both and I was bursting with pride." Kevin uploaded his video on social media before going to bed that night and woke up to find it had gone viral. The dad was inundated with messages from supporters of the Swiss club. He said their lives haven't been the same since and the club are going to be a fixture in their lives going forward. Kevin added: "I don't know where it will go from here but it has been a wonderful journey so far. "BSC Young Boys are definitely our second club now and Joshua has absolutely fallen in love with them." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
