9.39 crore solution to Uttam Nagar waterlogging problem

Ahmedabad: The city civic body has allocated Rs 9.39 crore for projects to address waterlogging in Maninagar ward's Uttam Nagar area. The area is among the 157 identified 'trouble' spots during monsoon. At a meeting of AMC's water and sewerage committee on Monday, a proposal to build a 900mm gravity line and a new stormwater pumping station at a cost of Rs 7.46 crore to tackle waterlogging at Uttam Nagar was approved. Moreover, a 600mm stormwater line will be laid to pump water from this spot to Kharicut Canal through Avkar Hall area. Furthermore, Rs 1.93 crore was approved for desilting all drainage lines in Maninagar ward, taking the total cost to Rs 9.39 crore. However, civic body sources said that despite the allocation, this monsoon will not be hassle-free for people of this area. More than 10 significant waterlogging spots have been identified in 200m to 1km radius of Chandola lake, and among them is the area near Mahavir School crossroads in Isanpur. A 600mm stormwater line will be laid to connect this spot to the lake for Rs 1.83 crore. AMC's standing committee had okayed the project proposal on Oct 24 last year. Additionally, AMC approved a proposal to install a rainwater harvesting structure with eco-blocks on Bandhan Triangle Road near SG Road in the Sola area of Gota ward for Rs 13 crore. More than seven waterlogging spots were identified by AMC in all zonal offices, sub-zonal offices, ward offices, hospitals, and schools in the Vasna and Navrangpura wards of the city. It has been decided to lay stormwater lines at a cost of Rs 216 crore to resolve the waterlogging issues at 10 spots in Vejalpur, Vasna, and Navrangpura. A Rs 36.27 crore project for a stormwater line from Makraba police headquarters to the Sabarmati via Fatehwadi Canal was also okayed. A proposal to lay stormwater drains using micro-tunneling from Manekbaug to Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee; from Jaydeep Tower to Malav Lake, and from downstream Vasna Barrage to Fatehwadi Canal for Rs 180.17 crore was also approved.

CBI arrests UP CGST superintendent in bribery case

CGST superintendent Nishan Singh Malli had allegedly issued penalty notice to a businessman, who controls the private company, on account of non-filing of GST returns. The other person arrested by the agency is a tax lawyer who was representing the complainant in the case, they said. New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) The CBI has arrested two persons, including a superintendent of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) in Uttar Pradesh, while allegedly accepting bribe of Rs 1 lakh for waiving off penalty on a private company, officials said Monday. Malli, who is posted at Gajrola with additional charge of Amroha in UP, demanded Rs 4 lakh in collusion with tax lawyer Amit Khandelwal from the businessman for waiving off penalty on his company, they said. 'The tax advocate was representing the complainant. However, he entered into a conspiracy with superintendent, CGST, Amroha and pressured the complainant to deliver the demand of undue advantage of Rs 4 lakh to the accused superintendent,' a CBI spokesperson said. The businessman approached the CBI with a complaint expressing unwillingness to pay the bribe, the spokesperson said in a statement. The agency laid a trap during which the superintendent and the advocate were arrested red handed taking Rs 1 lakh as the first instalment of the total Rs 4 lakh demanded as bribe, the statement said. Private firms defy ban on road digging, restoration delays add to citizens woes

Nagpur: Despite Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) blanket ban on road digging after June 1, private firms continue to flout orders with impunity, worsening the already fragile condition of city roads just as the monsoon sets in. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Monday, TOI spotted workers from a private telecom company digging up the road near Katol Square — the same patch that was excavated last week for laying cables. The Mangalwari zone halted the work then, following a TOI report, but the firm resumed operations using heavy machinery in open defiance of municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari's directive. Other areas where these works are openly being carried out include Narendra Nagar, Manish Nagar, and areas near a high-end hotel on Wardha Road, as well as many internal areas in South and South-West Nagpur. The ongoing violations also reflect poorly on NMC's public works department, headed by officiating chief engineer Manoj Talewar, which is struggling to enforce the civic chief's diktat. The ban was issued specifically to prevent disruption and ensure smooth vehicular movement during the monsoon. However, the lack of monitoring and repeated breaches exposes administrative gaps within the department responsible for implementation. Several roads across the city dug up for infrastructure works remain unrestored, compounding the woes of citizens. In the Hudkeshwar-Narsala area, the first heavy rainfall turned large portions of unfinished roads into slushy, hazardous zones. For the past 3-4 months, major sewerage pipeline work under the Rs 900 crore Amrut 2.0 Pora River Pollution Abatement Project has been underway, laying over 500 km of pipelines in South and South-West Nagpur. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Despite pipeline-laying being completed at many stretches, the roads have not been properly restored. Trenches were only partially filled with loose soil, which has since turned into slippery mud traps. Now, in a token attempt at repair, contractors have merely dumped gravel and crushed stones, making it difficult and unsafe for pedestrians and vehicles alike. Residents fear conditions will worsen with more rain. "The roads in our locality have become death traps. Repeated complaints to the PHE department and contractors have fallen on deaf ears," said Dhanraj Valukar, chairman of the local residents' committee. Satish Kasare and Mangesh Charde added that the continued neglect has caused multiple vehicle breakdowns and accidents, especially involving two-wheelers. Another hotspot is the road from Mate Chowk to RPTS Road, where fresh excavation has disrupted traffic flow. Loose soil has spilled over onto the road, creating a major accident risk. While the NMC sought technical guidance from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), which prescribed specific methods for restoring tar and concrete roads after utility work, these guidelines are being routinely ignored. Commissioner Chaudhari has issued an ultimatum to the public health engineering and public works departments, along with contractors, to ensure all dug-up roads are restored to their original condition. However, the continued violations suggest a serious lack of coordination, enforcement, and accountability.
