Anwar arrives in Moscow, receives guard of honour in historic reception

MOSCOW: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the Vnukovo-2 Airport here at 6.26pm local time today (11.26pm Malaysia) to a formal guard of honour, the first such reception accorded to a Malaysian prime minister in 17 years.
Anwar was welcomed on arrival by Russia's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Andrey Rudenko.
The ceremonial guard of honour marks a historic moment in Malaysia-Russia diplomatic ties.
The last time such honours were extended was in June 2007, when the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi made an official visit to Moscow during President Vladimir Putin's earlier term.
Anwar is leading a high-level delegation on a four-day official visit to Russia, covering Moscow and Kazan.
Accompanying him are Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang.
Also part of the delegation are Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Upon arrival, the prime minister proceeded to attend a pre-council meeting with his delegation, a preparatory session ahead of engagements with Russian leaders and business figures scheduled over the next two days.
Later tonight, Anwar is expected to host a dinner with members of the Malaysian diaspora in Russia, including students, embassy staff and professionals working in various sectors.
The visit marks Anwar's second trip to Russia in eight months and his first official visit since assuming office in November 2022.
It is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, boosting economic cooperation and enhancing Malaysia's engagement with the Islamic world through platforms such as KazanForum 2025.

Abdul Raof Mokhtar named acting Kota Raja Umno chief after Tengku Zafrul's exit

SHAH ALAM, June 11 — The Kota Raja Umno division chief position is now held by Abdul Raof Mokhtar, said Selangor Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin. He said that Abdul Raof, who is currently the deputy chief of the division, will act in the position until the next party election. He said this followed the resignation of Kota Raja Umno division chief, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who also expressed his intention to join PKR on May 30. 'Automatically, the deputy chief of the (Kota Raja) Umno Division will act in the position of division chief. We will send an official letter to Umno president (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) for the matter to be brought to the Supreme Council meeting,' he said. He said this at a press conference after opening the Wanita, Youth and Puteri Selangor Umno 2025 Delegation meeting at Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam, which was attended by 1,248 delegates from the state party's wings last night. Megat Zulkarnain announced that his friendship with Tengku Zafrul is still as usual, and also called on Selangor Umno to continue working and moving forward. On May 30, Tengku Zafrul, minister of investment, trade, and industry, announced his resignation from Umno via a statement on Facebook, stating that he had sent a letter of resignation to the Umno leadership on the same date. Tengku Zafrul, through a letter sent to the Umno leadership, expressed his intention to resign as a member of the Supreme Council, Kota Raja Umno Division Chief and Umno member. — Bernama

Apples, oranges, lemons to cost 5% more

Good morning. Here's what you should know today. Key Highlights Apples, oranges, lemons to cost 5% more Appeals court hits pause on Yusoff v Anwar No opt-out for MCMC data gathering Apples, oranges, lemons to cost 5% more Apples, lemons, and most oranges - fruits that are almost entirely imported here - are going to cost 5 percent more come July. The reason? The government is expanding the sales and services tax (SST) to cover more "non-essential" goods and services, and imported fruits are on that list. Local fruits, however, will remain tax-free, as will a slew of other food staples. Other food items that will be taxed include salmon, cod, truffle mushrooms, and king crab. HIGHLIGHTS Appeals court hits pause on Yusoff v Anwar The Court of Appeal has granted a temporary stay of proceedings in the sexual assault civil suit brought against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim by Yusoff Rawther. This is pending a decision on Anwar's bid to get a full stay on the case. The trial was supposed to commence next week before Anwar got the temporary stay on Tuesday. HIGHLIGHTS No opt-out for MCMC data gathering There is no option for mobile users to opt out of an ongoing pilot project involving the collection of anonymised mobile phone data for official statistical purposes. The MCMC cited legal provisions that allow them to collect anonymised data for infrastructure improvement. They added that mobile phone data is not classified as personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, as it reportedly can't be used to identify or trace individuals, either directly or indirectly.
