Anwar arrives in Moscow, receives guard of honour in historic reception

MOSCOW: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the Vnukovo-2 Airport here at 6.26pm local time today (11.26pm Malaysia) to a formal guard of honour, the first such reception accorded to a Malaysian prime minister in 17 years. Anwar was welcomed on arrival by Russia's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Andrey Rudenko. The ceremonial guard of honour marks a historic moment in Malaysia-Russia diplomatic ties. The last time such honours were extended was in June 2007, when the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi made an official visit to Moscow during President Vladimir Putin's earlier term. Anwar is leading a high-level delegation on a four-day official visit to Russia, covering Moscow and Kazan. Accompanying him are Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang. Also part of the delegation are Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Upon arrival, the prime minister proceeded to attend a pre-council meeting with his delegation, a preparatory session ahead of engagements with Russian leaders and business figures scheduled over the next two days. Later tonight, Anwar is expected to host a dinner with members of the Malaysian diaspora in Russia, including students, embassy staff and professionals working in various sectors. The visit marks Anwar's second trip to Russia in eight months and his first official visit since assuming office in November 2022. It is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, boosting economic cooperation and enhancing Malaysia's engagement with the Islamic world through platforms such as KazanForum 2025.
