MOSCOW: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived here Tuesday (May 13) for a four-day official visit, receiving a Guard of Honour upon arrival at Vnukovo-2 Airport at 6.26pm local time (11.26pm Malaysian time).
The official welcome ceremony marks the first of its kind accorded to a Malaysian prime minister in nearly two decades, with the last similar reception given to the fifth prime minister, the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, during his official visit to Russia in 2007.
Anwar was received by Malaysia's Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai, while Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko welcomed him on behalf of the Russian government.
The official visit, taking place from May 13 to 16, is at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The itinerary includes engagements in Moscow and Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
The visit began Tuesday night with a gathering with Malaysians residing in Russia, while on Wednesday (May 14), Anwar is scheduled to participate in a roundtable discussion with about 20 Russian industry leaders.
The Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterpart Mikhail Mishustin and attend a meeting with President Putin.
On Thursday (May 15), Anwar will deliver a public lecture at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he will also be conferred an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contributions to global peace and international cooperation.
In Kazan, the Prime Minister will meet with the Head of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, and deliver a keynote address at the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group Meeting.
The highlight of his visit to Kazan will be his participation in the 16th Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum, where he is invited to deliver a keynote speech during the plenary session.
KazanForum is a major platform for fostering economic cooperation between Russia and Islamic countries.
As of 2024, Russia is Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European countries, with total trade valued at RM11.46bil (US$2.48bil). — Bernama

Gaza-bound Aid Flotilla With 12 Activists On Board Nears Gaza Coast Despite Israeli Warning
A drone view shows the Gaza-bound aid ship Madleen, organised by the international NGO Freedom Flotilla Coalition, anchored off the coast of Catania, Italy, on June 1, 2025. REUTERS/Danilo Arnone ANKARA, June 8 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The aid ship "Madleen" has entered Egyptian waters on its way to Gaza, despite Israel's stated intention to prevent it from docking, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported citing the International Committee for Breaking the Siege on Gaza announced Sunday. The committee, one of the aid flotilla organisers, said in a statement that the ship has passed through Alexandria, northern Egypt, and will "in hours reach Mansoura city... en route to Gaza." "The coming hours will be most critical," the statement read. bootstrap slideshow The ship also has 12 activists on board, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham. Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament who is also on board the vessel, posted a live photo update on her X account. Last week, Israeli state broadcaster KAN reported that Tel Aviv had reversed its initial decision to allow the ship to pass. The approval was withdrawn under the pretext of "setting a precedent" for future humanitarian aid missions. The ship is carrying urgently needed supplies for the people of Gaza, including baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, women's sanitary products, water desalination kits, medical supplies, crutches, and children's prosthetics, according to its organisers. Another ship operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Conscience, was targeted by drones off the coast of Malta on May 2. Israel, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,800 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million inhabitants.

JSC defends MTUC authority amid claims of leadership void
J Solomon – Photo via Facebook KUCHING (June 8): The Joint Special Committee (JSC) has asserted its position as the legitimate leadership of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), rejecting claims by the Human Resources Minister that the congress lacks leadership. JSC chairman J Solomon stated that the minister must be held accountable for Malaysia's failure to send a complete workers' delegation to the 113th International Labour Conference (ILC), a significant event under the International Labour Organisation (ILO). 'MTUC is the most widely represented organisation of workers in Malaysia,' said Solomon. 'As required by the ILO Constitution, MTUC is responsible for nominating the workers' delegation whilst the minister's role is to submit the names provided by MTUC,' he said in a statement yesterday. He stressed that the minister had no authority to interfere in MTUC's internal affairs, particularly as the organisation is already in in the process of holding elections scheduled for August 2 and 3. Solomon added that Malaysia's credibility at the ILO is at stake, especially since Malaysia is shortlisted for discussions on the implementation of Convention 98, which relates to workers' rights and anti-union discrimination. He further charged that the minister had failed to ensure that Malaysian workers representatives were registered at the ILC, adding that the entire conduct of the minister was an attempt to prevent criticism over Malaysia's labour laws shortcomings from being aired at the international stage. 'If the minister was sincere in wanting to ensure that Malaysian workers are to be represented at the ILC, he would have reached out to the JSC after receiving the ILO invitation,' Solomon said. 'Instead, the minister chose to do nothing but offer excuses, and it is now clear that he is misusing the entire government machinery including the Attorney General's Chambers to 'cover his mischief',' he added. 'Malaysia needs a strong and full tripartite representation at the ILC. Yet, instead of focusing on urgent labour reforms, the minister seems to be denying MTUC its rightful place in the ILC.'

Many opportunities for Asean amidst US' tariff tantrum, says Asean-BAC head
HANOI (Bernama-VNA): South-East Asian countries can capitalise on the rollout of tariffs and other US policies by re-evaluating overlooked relations with other trade partners and opening their doors to international students.
