
Ford blames tariffs for profit slump, says Japanese automakers have an advantage
"Our tariffs bill is $2 billion, and that's a net number," Farley said. The Ford CEO also said he expected automakers to adopt a regional rather than a globalized strategy going forward because of the combined effect of tariffs, the rise of electric vehicles, and new emissions regulations, Business Insider reported. The Trump Administration's rollback of EV incentives and environmental regulations will create a disparity between the U.S. and other major car markets like Europe and China.
"We are increasingly seeing Europe, North America, and Asia becoming kind of regional businesses with tariff rates that are aligned for those three or four regions," Farley said. "This is quite a fundamental change."
Ford has claimed at that was much as 80% of its U.S. volume is domestically-assembled, but Farley still thinks the automaker is at a disadvantage compared to some foreign firms. In an interview with Bloomberg published the same day as the earnings call, he said Trump's reduced tariffs for Japan would give automakers from that country a "meaningful" advantage.
Trump recently lowered tariffs on Japanese automotive imports from 25% to 15%-the same as rates for cars assembled in the European Union going forward. Farley said lower labor costs and favorable exchange rates could mean that a Kentucky-built Ford Escape costs $5,000 more than a Toyota RAV4 assembled in Japan, while a Michigan-built Ford Bronco could be $10,000 pricier than a Toyota 4Runner, which is also built in Japan.
Farley told Bloomberg that Ford is working with the Trump Administration to "minimize our tariff expense so that we can get more competitive," but threatened that "the bottom line is our plan at Ford is not to compete in those commodity segments."
Industry analysts have raised concerns about massive tariffs since Trump first proposed them as a candidate in the 2024 presidential election, but the past few weeks have made their impact apparent.
As automakers reported their first-half financial results, an evaporation of profits caused by tariff bills was a common theme. The Volkswagen Group, for example, reported that its profits were down by a third in the second quarter, from the same period a year earlier, despite increased sales.
Recently-concluded trade deals with both the European Union and Japan likely won't help matters. Both drop tariffs on cars from 25% to 15%, but in the case of the EU, that's still much higher than the 2.5% tariff in place before Trump's return to the White House.

American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:AXL) shares are trading higher on Friday. Outlook American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings raised its fiscal year 2025 sales guidance from $5.65 billion–$5.95 billion to $5.75 billion–$5.95 billion, compared with the $5.77 billion consensus estimate. The company now expects 2025 adjusted EBITDA of $695 million–$745 million, up from the prior range of $665 million–$745 million. It also forecasts adjusted free cash flow of $175 million–$215 million (versus $165 million–$215 million before), assuming capital expenditures of roughly 5% of sales and mitigation of most incremental tariff costs. Trade war will push prices 1.8 percent higher in short term: Analysis
President Trump's tariff war could push prices 1.8 percent higher in the short term, potentially costing the average American household about $2,400, according to a new analysis from The Budget Lab at Yale. The nonpartisan think tank found that consumers faced an overall effective tariff rate of 18.6 percent, the highest in nearly a century. Adjusting for changes in consumer preference due to the tariffs, the Budget Lab estimated that the overall effective tariff rate would be 17.7 percent, still the highest since 1934. The Budget Lab's price analyses assume that the cost of the duties will be entirely passed onto consumers, and do not take into account any reaction the Federal Reserve could have to tariffs. The new tariffs include a 50 percent levy on India. Laos, Switzerland and Iraq are also facing blanket tariff rates of 35 percent or higher. The Budget Lab projected that low-income households would feel the costs of the tariffs more than their high-income counterparts. In the short run, the tariffs will primarily impact leather products like shoes and bags, textiles and other clothing items, the lab estimated. In the long run, automobile prices could rise nearly 10 percent, the equivalent of about $4,500 added onto the price tag of a new car in 2024. Groceries could be impacted to a lesser extent. The Budget Lab projected that food prices would rise 3.2 percent in the short term before stabilizing at 2.9 percent higher in the long run.

JPMorgan predicts Fed will cut rates in September — and four total times this year
JPMorgan is now predicting the Federal Reserve will begin cutting interest rates when it next meets in September — and four times overall before the end of the year — as pressure mounts to ease monetary policy. The nation's largest bank, led by Jamie Dimon, expects a quarter-point cut after the Fed's two-day meeting on Sept. 16-17, followed by three more cuts of the same size at their remaining meetings — which would bring the benchmark rate down to a range between 3.25% and 3.5%. JPMorgan's earlier projection was that the Fed would wait until December to start lowering rates.
