Red Sea Film Foundation-supported films shine at 75th Berlinale
The recognition of these films highlights the Red Sea Film Foundation's ongoing dedication to supporting unique voices through the Red Sea Fund.
At the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival, three films backed by the Red Sea Film Foundation— Têtes Brûlées , The Heart is a Muscle and Yalla Parkour —received awards, underscoring the Foundation's role in fostering impactful storytelling on the global stage.
The Heart Is a Muscle was awarded the Ecumenical Jury Prize in the Panorama section. The film follows Ryan, a father whose five-year-old son briefly goes missing at a barbecue. His intense reaction to the incident triggers a series of events that uncover long-buried secrets and set him on a path of self-discovery.
Yalla Parkour secured the Panorama Documentary Audience Award (Second Prize). Directed by Areeb Zuaiter in her debut feature, the documentary captures her return to Gaza—a place she first visited as a child with her Palestinian mother. After her mother's passing, a deep longing for her homeland resurfaces when she discovers a video of young men in Gaza practising parkour amidst the turmoil of explosions.
Têtes Brûlées received a Special Mention for Best Film in the youth-focused Generation 14plus category. The story revolves around 12-year-old Eya, who struggles to cope with the sudden loss of her older brother, Younès. Through resilience and the support of Younès' friends, she embarks on an emotional journey to navigate her grief.
In addition to these achievements, The Sun Sees Everything , a film in development by Wissam Tanios and produced by Christian Eid, won the World Cinema Fund Audience Strategies Award at the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

Directed, written and edited by Ameer Fakher Eldin, the film is a Canadian-German-Italian co-production, with contributions from Palestine, Qatar, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The cast includes Lebanese actor and filmmaker George Khabbaz, German actress Hanna Schygulla, Palestinian actor Ali Suleiman and Game of Thrones stars Sibel Kekilli and Thomas Wlaschiha, alongside Lebanese theatre veteran Nidal El Ashkar. Ameer Fakher Eldin, a Syrian filmmaker based in Hamburg, was born in Kyiv in 1991 to Syrian parents from the occupied Golan Heights. Joining Yunan in the festival's program is Têtes brûlées, a poignant coming-of-age story from Belgian-Tunisian-Danish director Maja Ajmia Zellama. The film centers on 12-year-old Eya as she grapples with the sudden death of her older brother Younès. Through a heartfelt exploration of grief, Eya finds solace in her imagination, her brother's close-knit circle of friends, and her own inner strength, as she begins to navigate a world without him. Produced by Komoko, with co-productions by Quetzalcoatl and 1080 Films, Têtes brûlées is a Belgian film enriched by Tunisian cultural influences. The cast features Safa Gharbaoui, Mehdi Bouziane, Mounir Amamra—known for his role in DIVINES—along with Adnane El Haruati, Saber Tabi, Nicolas Makola, Mehdi Zellama and Monia Taieb.

Red Sea Film Foundation launches fifth edition of 48Hr Film Challenge
Aspiring filmmakers in Saudi Arabia aged between 18 and 25 are invited to submit their applications by June 15, 2025. The Red Sea Film Foundation has announced the fifth edition of its 48Hr Film Challenge, in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Jeddah, the Embassy of France in Saudi Arabia, Alliance Française and the Centre for French Culture. This annual initiative aims to nurture young talent and encourage innovation in Saudi Arabia's independent film scene. Aspiring filmmakers have until June 15, 2025, to submit their applications. Open to Saudi nationals and residents aged 18 to 25, the challenge allows teams of up to five members, each led by a Saudi-based director. Selected participants will first attend an intensive virtual workshop on July 11–12, 2025, featuring industry experts such as Iraqi director Ahmed Yassine Darradji, Saudi filmmaker Ahd Kamel and editor Cyril Aris, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The main challenge will unfold over the weekend of July 18–19 , 2025, when teams will be given a theme and a required element to incorporate into a short film, which must be completed—written, shot and edited—within 48 hours. In September 2025, the 15 shortlisted teams will engage in two professional development days with film professionals from Saudi Arabia and France. These sessions will offer tailored mentoring and feedback on the submitted films. The completed works will be screened for a jury of esteemed filmmakers and industry figures. Two winning teams will be selected based on creativity, execution and innovation. The winning directors will be awarded a filmmaking residency in France in 2026, arranged by the French Consulate, and their films will be featured at the fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival in December 2025. The Red Sea Film Foundation encourages young Saudi filmmakers to seize this opportunity to develop their craft, collaborate with peers, and showcase their storytelling talent on an international stage.

Submissions are now being accepted across several key sections of the festival, including the Red Sea: Competition and Red Sea: Shorts Competition, as well as the New Saudi/New Cinema section, which is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of Saudi filmmaking talent. Celebrating its fifth year, the Red Sea IFF continues to expand its influence and cultural significance, having already screened over 520 films from 85 countries and hosted more than 160 global premieres. The selected films will be in contention for the Yusr Awards, including the coveted Golden Yusr for Best Feature Film, which carries a grand prize of $100,000.
