‘Akhanda Godavari' will become an iconic tourist destination, says Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan on Thursday performed bhumi puja for the ₹94-crore Akhanda Godavari project on the banks of the Godavari in Rajamahendravaram.
Under the Union Government-funded Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), the State government would renovate the 125-year-old Havelock Bridge with more tourist attractions, apart from developing Dowleswaram, Kadiyam, Kovvur, Nidadavolu, and surrounding areas as prime tourist destinations.
Mr. Shekhawat and Mr. Pawan Kalyan went round the photo exhibition on the projects proposed under Akhanda Godavari initiative.
Addressing the gathering at the Havelock Bridge, Mr. Shekhawat said, 'The Godavari riverfront development project, titled Akhanda Godavari, will become an iconic tourist destination in India. The project aims at creating a comprehensive riverfront experience anchored along the 125-year-old Havelock Bridge and Pushkar Ghat.'
'The Akhanda Godavari project is the most ambitious among the ₹450-crore worth of seven projects that have been sanctioned to Andhra Pradesh over the past one year,' said Mr. Shekhawat.
He further said that walkers would be allowed to walk for 1.2 km on the bridge, on which an interpretation centre would come up to showcase Godavari regional culture and heritage. He observed that at least 20 lakh annual footfalls of tourists could be expected at the Havelock Bridge and the Tent City on its island.
Mr. Shekhawat said the three-acre Kadiyam flower nurseries' experience centre would feature flower exhibitions, live demonstrations and offer Godavari regional cuisines.
Wish fulfilled: Pawan
In his address, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said the decades'-long wish to renovate the abandoned Havelock Bridge was being fulfilled with the Akhanda Godavari project. He reminded that Rajamahendravaram was the land where Adikavi Nannaya was born, and civilisation thrived by the river.
State Minister for Tourism and Culture Kandula Durgesh and MP D. Purandeswari appealed to Mr. Shekhawat to sanction a branch of the National School of Drama.

Jagan: Govt pushing state into ‘debt trap'
Vijayawada: Former chief minister on Thursday alleged that the state govt's lack of fiscal discipline and disregard for constitutional framework is pushing the state into a debt trap. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said the APMDC non-convertible debentures (NCDs) bonds were issued at a coupon (interest) rate as high as 9.30%, which is 2.60% higher than the prevailing SDL rate. In a post on microblogging platform X, tagging Union finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman and the PMO, Jagan alleged that APMDC concluded the second tranche of its NCD (bond) issuance at a coupon (interest) rate of 9.30% to raise 5,526 crore, taking the aggregate value of the issuance to 9,000 crore on Wednesday (June 25). He said this is second instalment of APMDC going for NCDs in violation of treasury rules. "The govt went ahead with the issuance of NCDs despite the matter being admitted by the AP high court and notices served. It is quite apparent that the proceeds of the issuance would be utilized to finance govt revenue expenditure," he said. He further stated that the TDP-led NDA govt granted private parties access to the consolidated funds of the state through RBI direct debit mandate, owing to which, private parties can access the state exchequer and withdraw funds without any requirement of any action from the govt officials. He alleged that it was a blatant violation of articles 203, 204 and 293(1) of the Constitution of India. The govt also mortgaged mineral wealth worth 1,91,000 crore for NCD (bond) issuances of aggregate value 9,000 crore, Jagan further claimed. He alleged that the additional yearly burden on APMDC is to the tune of 235 crore due to the high interest rate, and the term of NCDs is understood to be 10 years. With NCD issuance, the total budget and off-budget borrowings availed and secured in this 13-month period by the TDP alliance govt exceeded 50% of what was borrowed by the previous govt over a five-year period, the YSRCP chief alleged.

CBFC revising committee rejects certification to JSK - Janaki vs State of Kerala
The revising committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has also demanded the makers of the film JSK - Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi, to change the title of the film as well as the name of the protagonist. Pravin Narayanan, director of the film, announced the revising committee's decision in a social media post on Thursday. The filmmaker had earlier told The Hindu that the Thiruvananthapuram regional office of the CBFC had cleared the censoring of the film on June 18 with a U/A certificate. However, when the regional office forwarded the same to the CBFC headquarters in Mumbai, the higher officials there demanded a change in the title as well as the name of the titular character of Janaki, apparently because the name also refers to the Hindu goddess Sita. It was conveyed to the makers through unofficial channels that the victim of a sexual assault cannot be named after a goddess. Protests planned Following the news of the rejection by the revising committee, various film bodies have begun planning for protests and legal action against the CBFC over the alleged repeated instances of censors making such demands of filmmakers. The revising committee met after the makers of the film approached the Kerala High Court alleging delay by the CBFC in issuing a censor certificate to the film. The delay has led to huge losses to the producers who had organised marketing campaigns and promotional events for the film, which was supposed to release on June 27.
