Xabi Alonso sends message to Arsenal over £67m Rodrygo transfer
Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has provided a further indication that Rodrygo will stay at the club despite interest from Arsenal.
Doubts over the Brazil international's future in the Spanish capital emerged at the end of last season after he was left on the bench for the title-deciding Clasico against Barcelona.
Reports in Spain later claimed Rodrygo had grown disillusioned with life at the Bernabeu with Arsenal among the clubs eager to offer him a new start.
In addition to a striker, the Gunners are eager to enlist the services of a new winger with Nico Williams and Anthony Gordon among their targets.
The Premier League side have also been closely monitoring developments around Rodrygo in Spain with Arteta a huge admirer of the former Sao Paulo youngster.

Teams from the Saudi Pro League have also been credited with interest this summer with Madrid prepared to sell the winger should they receive an offer of around €80million (£67.5m).
Shortly after arriving to replace Carlo Ancelotti, Alonso explained his intention to keep the 'spectacular' Brazilian at the club. Speculation has continued to build, but the new Real head coach has reiterated his desire to keep him at the club, believing Rodrygo has now had time to 'reset his mind'.
Speaking ahead of Real's opening match of the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal, Alonso said: 'I know what had happened in the final stretch, it was not easy for him.
'He took some time to reset his head and I see him wanting to enjoy and contribute.'
There are increasing signs Rodrygo will remain a Real player with his father and representative, Eric Goes, 'unwilling to enter into negotiations' with Arsenal or any other club at this stage, with his son said to have been charmed by Alonso.
Reports in Spain have claimed Alonso has been 'very attentive' to Rodrygo in training since his arrival with the player feeling 'positive' again over his future at the club.
Arsenal star Gabriel Magalhaes meanwhile has urged the Gunners to sign his 'phenomenal' countryman. More Trending
During his appearance on the Podpah Podcast, Gabriel was asked if he knows whether Arsenal will sign Rodrygo this summer.
'I don't. No, I don't, not really,' Gabriel replied.
'But I'd like obviously. Rodrygo is a phenomenon, for me. He's not at Arsenal… If it depended on me, I've told people already, he's a phenomenon.
'His name is mentioned a lot. If it was up to me, of course.'

Bernardo Silva named new Manchester City captain in final year of contract
Bernardo Silva will captain Manchester City at the Club World Cup, with the Portuguese player saying he could leave the club when his contract expires next June. The 30-year-old signed in the summer of 2017 and is one of Pep Guardiola's most trusted players, a status reflected in the manager nominating him to lead the campaign to claim the inaugural 32-team competition in the US. While City's bid begins against Wydad at Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday at midday local time, the playmaker was asked about his future. Silva, 30, has one year left on his terms. 'I know what I'm going to do but it's not the time to talk about that,' Silva said. 'I'm very focused on my season. I'm very focused on performing well for Man City. When the time is due I will talk about it. I have one year on my contract so obviously I can leave next season. This season will for sure be with Man City. I'm going to stay. I've had options in the past and this year, like last year and this year, my option is to stay at Man City.' Silva was asked what condition he is in due to the gruelling schedule. 'We know what the schedule is like,' he said. 'It is what it is, we're very used to that. It's been a few years that it's like this. So, it's a beautiful competition. Obviously, the amount of games – we've already talked about this but now that we're here and it's such an important competition with teams from all around the world, we're going to respect a lot the competition and we're going to give our best to go the furthest possible – which is win the competition. 'The guys that went to Portugal – between the end of the Premier League and the beginning of our training with Portugal, we had five days which was OK. And now we have one-and-a-half which is also nice to see the family. Maybe we're going to have some time after this.'

Bernardo Silva suggests this will be his last season at Manchester City
Bernardo Silva has suggested that this will be his final season at Manchester City even though he has just been appointed captain by Pep Guardiola. The 30-year-old has 12 months left on his current deal and stated that he will resist all offers to leave this summer and stay at City. Saudi Pro-League Club Al-Hilal are pushing to sign Silva but the expectation is he will remain at City and see out his contract before deciding his future after next year's World Cup. 'I know what I'm going to do but it's not the time to talk about that,' Silva said. 'I'm very focused on my season. I'm very focused on performing well for Man City. When the time is due I will talk about it.' He added: 'I've had options in the past (to leave) and this year, like last year. And this year, my option is to stay at Man City.' Asked whether he was open-minded over his future, Silva said: 'Yes, I have one year on my contract so obviously I can leave next season… This season will for sure be with Man City. I'm going to stay.' Silva will lead City into their Club World Cup campaign which begins on Wednesday against Moroccan side Wydad. Guardiola has emphasised to his squad that he regards this tournament as the start of a new season – not the end of the last, hugely disappointing campaign when City surrendered their dominance of the Premier League and did not win any silverware. Interestingly, Guardiola has taken it upon himself to appoint the captain for the season – having previously allowed the players and staff to decide in a ballot. 'This season for the first time in my career I will choose,' Guardiola stated. 'I didn't like what happened this (last) season, I want to decide who represents.' However he refused to expand on what, exactly, he did not 'like' in the last campaign when Kevin De Bruyne – who has now left for Napoli after his contract expired – and Ruben Dias largely captained the side. Dias remains in the captaincy group along with Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and with Erling Haaland added. But it will be Silva who is the regular captain with Guardiola explaining: 'Bernardo has been incredible for us. Eight years, no injuries. When he had to say something to me he says it because it is the best for the club. They (the group) will guide the new players.' Even so it remains to be seen how regularly Silva plays in Guardiola's revamped side with four signings in time for this competition to add to the four made in the January window. 'What happened last season . . . we don't accept it' Silva spoke about how deep the disappointment of last season was for the players. 'We talked a lot as a group about what happened and we learned a lot of very important lessons,' he said. 'Hopefully we're never going to forget especially this season. We're not going to forget what happened last season and try to make things right. 'We've proven in the past it's a very competitive squad, a very competitive dressing room and we don't accept defeat easily. What happened last season, we don't accept it and we want to turn things around as quickly as possible. Back to try and go and win trophies. 'The manager wants us to feel like this is already the new season and the start of something important. So, we're trying to create that type of atmosphere and this is a great competition to start at.' Despite being awarded the captaincy by Guardiola, Silva faces more competition than ever to retain his place in the City team with Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders being added to the midfield options. 'Cherki is a special character in terms of his attitude,' Silva said. 'He tries things that other players wouldn't dare to try. It's good to have all types of players: We need a bit of extra quality in the final third and I think that little magic and those special moments he brings to the squad is really nice. 'It's good because the guys that perform the best are going to be the ones that play. It's good for the team because you have two, three players per position. 'It's a tough job for the manager but also a good one in terms of, you know, that individually you're not going to perform at your best for 60 games in a season. And last year we had the problem that maybe in some moments we couldn't change and the players were tired not only physically but mentally. Hopefully, this season that doesn't happen.'
