He said the world needed their ideas, energy and vision to address challenges that required fresh perspectives and bold actions. Speaking at the opening of the programme at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) today, Hajiji stressed that youth must continue to rise to leadership challenges and their potential must be recognised and nurtured. His speech, delivered by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, emphasised the importance of encouraging young people to engage actively in community initiatives and leadership training. The week-long programme involves youth leaders from 12 South East Asia and Pacific countries, and is organised by the Regional Islamic Da'wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (Riseap) with the United Sabah Islamic Association (Usia), government agencies and NGOs. Hajiji urged participants to build connections, share experiences, and embrace new ideas, reminding them that leadership was about influence, responsibility and service to others. He expressed confidence that the training under Riseap's guidance would help participants become capable and competent leaders in line with the Malaysia Madani Government's goals and Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan, while also thanking Riseap chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for choosing Sabah as host. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Government to roll out mobile courts in rural areas, says Azalina

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Minderjeet Kaur, FMT Reporters Text Size: The 'Justice on Wheels' initiative has the backing of the newly appointed Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, according to law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The government will introduce mobile court services in rural areas under the 'Justice on Wheels' initiative to improve access to justice, says law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said. Azalina said the initiative, already in place in Sabah and Sarawak, will be extended to Peninsular Malaysia soon. 'We want to strengthen legal aid with a focus on the rural areas,' she said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan for her ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. She said courts are mostly available in cities and big towns in districts, making it difficult for rural communities to seek legal assistance. 'Our hope is to have one mobile unit for each state, especially for the rural areas. Mobile legal access will not only solve small cases but also help with registering documents,' she said. She said the initiative has received backing from newly appointed Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh. Azalina also said the Public Defenders Bill will be tabled for its first reading next week, followed by the second reading. Previously highlighted in the revised 2023 budget, the proposed law will provide free legal aid in criminal cases for the less privileged. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Upcoming election seen as key test for Sabah

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 Text Size: Jonnybone with fellow GRS Youth members during the special preparation meeting. KOTA KINABALU: The upcoming election is seen as a significant test for Sabah, with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Youth moving to strengthen its grassroots machinery ahead of the state polls. A special meeting chaired by Datuk Jonnybone Kurum on Monday agreed to appoint GRS Youth Coordinators at every parliamentary level as part of efforts to streamline preparations. He described the election as the first true test for Sabahans since the state gained greater autonomy from national parties that had shaped its politics for decades. GRS is now home to eight local parties under one coalition, a development regarded as unprecedented in the state's political landscape. The meeting also highlighted the importance of safeguarding stability against external pressures that could undermine unity at the grassroots level. Discussions touched on federal funding issues at village level, with assurances that the state government would continue supporting community leaders without reliance on federal allocations. GRS Youth also finalised plans for the official launch of its election machinery and pledged to uphold Sabah's dignity and future in the face of the coming contest. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Russian strikes kill three in Ukraine's Kharkiv ahead of key White House talks

KYIV: Russian drone strikes killed three people, including a child, and injured 18 others in Ukraine's Kharkiv region overnight. Kharkiv police confirmed the casualties in a Telegram post, warning that victims might still be trapped under the rubble of a damaged five-storey apartment block. The city near the Russian border had already suffered a ballistic missile strike hours earlier that wounded at least 11 people, according to Mayor Igor Terekhov. Russian forces also attacked Ukraine's Sumy region early Monday, injuring a 57-year-old woman and a 43-year-old driver with a bomb and subsequent drone strike. Regional military chief Oleg Grygorov provided details of the Sumy assault, which occurred near the volatile border area. These attacks coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's planned Washington visit for critical talks with European allies about ending the war. US President Donald Trump stated ahead of the meetings that Ukraine regaining Crimea or joining NATO would not be considered as options. Zelensky has consistently rejected pressure to surrender territories currently under Russian control, which account for approximately 20% of Ukraine's land. Russian forces have recently advanced in eastern Ukraine while proposing Kyiv relinquish Donbas in exchange for freezing frontline positions near Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. The strategic Black Sea port cities remain under Ukrainian control despite Moscow's territorial demands. – AFP
